EJ Dionne's value problem. Is the majority always right? Let's ask S Baldwin
"It is just a matter of time," she (Pelosi) says, before Republicans can "no longer stay with the president."
There is no doubt that this statement is true.
There is no doubt that the democratic opposition to the war and Moveonites, along with the clear and unambiguous bias and political plan of MOST mas media has convinced the american populace at large that this is Vietnam.
So what?
The objective reality remains that the Vietcong had neither the the will, the plan, nor the means to destroy the wa of life of americans. The objective reality remains that to the current enemy, we remain an affront to the idea of God they share. They are commanded to fight us until we accept their way of believeing, pay the submission tax or die. The only question is, what are their means.
The opposition has succeeded in their argument that we are attempting to be guards in a civil war of ancient dimension. Of course we cannot help but HAVING to attempt this while killing Al Qaeda in the central struggle on land today against the Salafi madmen. Of course also, this must be not only ignored, but destroyed as a perception int he minds of americans or we are liable to do anything.
In the past a wildly popular leader of England for a substantial amount of time, repeatedly told a fallen member of his own party, that peace and prosperity at any price was better than grim preparations for war that might never come. He felt right thru to his soul that if the majority wanted something he was compelled to give it to them, and in fact that this made the plan of the govt right.
I wonder how George Washington, while contemplating John Jay's treaty would have felt about such an argument. Or if Abe Lincoln who posted an August 64 letter to himself predicting his own defeat for changing the war from one of insisting on Union, to one of ending slavery, could have remained in the same room for long with such a man.
Today the argument that Iraq was a mistake because the MAJORITY FEELS SO, is a difficult proposition to to defeat. Perception is reality, eh?
Was it a mistake to end Saddam?
Is it a mistake to think democracy can end the threat of a cataclysmic war of civilizations killing a billion or more?
Was it a mistake to try to bring democracy with human rights to that nation?
Was it a mistake to feel moral obligation to provide security for those people?
And yet all those questions are tactical in nature and particular that that one campaign.
And that remains the central issue.
If the public believes as part of this public relations fiasco the administraion has allowed, and I think they do, that Iraq is a seaparate issue from the one war out there, then there will be dire consequences ahead if that PERCEPTION is not matched to the objective reality.
The democrats will win in 08 and control congress not because of Iraq, but because this administration was afraid to make the case that there is no escape from the KKK of Islam, whether Khomeinist freaks or Salafist freaks. The administration was petrified that if they mentioned that the majority of muslims were in fear of these conscienceless killers, and that at BEST a large plurality SUPPORTED the central belief set, and goals of these murderers, and worst an OUTRIGHT majority favored such an outcome, that they would be considered, what some term ISLAMOPHOBIC and racist.
As a result we have today the majority here, encouraged by a deceived and naive media (spiralling ever inward in the arrogant belief that it's about US), and a cynical group around Mr. Soros and Moveon whose main enemy remain the republicans and the idea of PROPERTY as selfish (ours not his or theirs) belieiving that an unwinnable civil war is kiling so many of our boys and girls (less than an hour's worth at the Cornfield at Antietam), in a war which was a mistake to begin, and is pointless, and that withdrawal will have little or no consequences, except for the improvement in being liked in 'Cameroon' due to national contrition and remorse.
The opposition to this opposition, is going to be defeated in 2008. There is NO DOUBT, save a horrific terrorist attack that this will be so (and even so, how many like Mr, Paul will call it our just deserts, for blowback?).
The new opposition to this majority shoud be concentrating on calmly warning the public of the nature of this 'thing', and it's intractability.
They should be very gently prodding the american public that the democrats at the national level simply cannot recognize what IS, and have taken every advantage of the media bias to distort the strategic picture for partisan political advantage, at the people's security expense.
The new oppostion should be quizzicly asking the public why the democrats at the national level would want to do such a thing?
