Immigration Reform - a conflated disaster of issues
The battle raging in all directions over this stupid bill is as confusing as the bill itself.
This bill should not be passed, and for that exact reason. It is at once all thing to all people, and nothing to anyone.
It's components are three ..and should not be confused and conflated
Border Security
Illegal Aliens
Realistic Immigration Policy
If one listens to the various criticisms, and you are in favor of this bill you are either in favor of a North American Union of socialist third worlders, a legal aide to illegals, stupid, ignorant, a lackey for big business.....yadda yadda and if you are against it you are a racist know nothing, a jingoistic relic of the 1830's, whose flag waving manifest destiny lunacy created this problem in the person of James Polk.
Until we pull this all apart the whole thing should grind to a halt.
Border Security
The US govt has no credibility on the issue of border security.
They have no believable plans for it. There is no cogent plan for the Mexican border, or the incredible length of the Canadian, much of which is forested near wilderness. We have what at sea? How many islands and inlets dot the Maine coastline, or the Carolina shores? A well reasoned argument could say that the money spent in Iraq to destroy islamist terrorism via democracy, could protect us at least as well with fleets of predators scanning the seas off our coasts visually and electronically. Too bad the dems are too busy with their Bush lied/'change course' sound bite mantra to take this and think about it.
We need as a people to believe the government is serious about this. They clearly are not, and why they are not is inexplicable. The american people get this below the level of verbiage. That is why there is such ridiculous confusion IN CONGRESS over this bill. The people DON'T BELIEVE their elected reps, who are running off in all directions at once without seeming reason on this existential issue while claiming they understand the last election perfectly on Iraq.
Until there is creditable action in this vein the rest of this bill is a farce.
Illegal Aliens
There's no point in trying to stop them while there is no border security and no disincentive for employers short of fines which are less painful then the money saved by employing, at blackmail wages, workers who cannot complain about a damn thing. This very issue engenders the suspicion that our lawmakers otherwise inexplicable actions are dictated by those forces which benefit most from this schizoid situation. Nor does it make the least bit of sense to make plans to make these people citizens yet since as soon as they are legal, they lose their low wages and graduate to american wages, and thus create a new vacuum to suck in more illegals to be blackmailed at low wages.
Realistic Immigration Policy
We need immigration to make new hardworking americans just as much now as we did in 1840, or 1905. We DON'T need those who want to come here in a mercenary state and send money home, then leave.
PERIOD.
I don't CARE who they vote for. We need REAL immigration.
That's what made us what we are.
...............................................................
These are three separate issues.
They should be treated as such.
