Iran's new nuclear negotiator believes nukes will trigger Armageddon, coming of Shi'ite messiah

Jalili is a firm loyalist of Ahmadinejad and his spiritual guide, Ayatollah Mesbah Yazdi. Mesbah believes Iran requires nuclear weapons in an Islamic global war that would finally demonstrate the Shi'ite claim of divine right.

GERTZ:Saeed Jalili believes he is negotiating to maintain Iran's nuclear weapons program from a position of strength. Unlike his predecessor, Ali Larijani, Jalili believes that nuclear weapons are the key to the Armegeddon that will usher in the Shi'ite messiah.

Larijani was replaced because of his criticism of Teheran's nuclear policy and the hardline approach of Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad.

Oh, so Larijani is a MODERATE?

Jalili does not have that problem. He is a firm loyalist of Ahmadinejad and his spiritual guide, Ayatollah Mesbah Yazdi. Mesbah believes Iran requires nuclear weapons in an Islamic global war that would finally demonstrate the Shi'ite claim of divine right.

Ayatollah Mesbah "If someone tells you he has a new interpretation of Islam, sock him in the mouth.", Yazdi? That guy again?

"This [Jalili] is a man not paid to think but to repeat the same Iranian mantra," a Western intelligence source said.

Jalili lost his leg in the Iran-Iraq war and soon became a devout follower of the mullah regime who rejected material benefits, such as a luxury cars. Over the last two years, Jalili, who received a doctorate from Imam Sadegh University in Teheran, has been regarded as a key adviser to Ahmadinejad on foreign affairs, particularly relations with the United States and Venezuela.

Indeed, earlier this year Jalili, a former IRGC senior officer, urged Ahmadinejad to write an 18-page letter to President George Bush that sought to justify Iran's nuclear program and domination of the Gulf. The letter referred to the messianic philosophy held by many supporters of Ahmadinejad.

Under Ahmadinejad, membership in the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps has become a virtual requirement to attain a senior position in government.

Who believes that these guys can be deterred in any way from obtaining nuclear weapons?

Who believes that these guys can be deterred from FIRST USE, either via Hizballah or outright?

IRGC was said to control 30 percent of the Iranian economy and operates Teheran's nuclear program. The elite military organization controls more than 500 companies worth more than $12 billion.

"The IRGC was created after the Khomeinist revolution had succeeded.

This fact is of crucial importance," Amir Taheri, a leading Iranian exile and analyst, said. "Those who joined the IRGC came from all sorts of backgrounds. The majority were opportunists. By joining the IRGC, they could not only obtain revolutionary credentials, often on fictitious grounds, but would also secure well-paying jobs, at a time that economic collapse made jobs rare."

Jalili doesn't have that problem. He was regarded as the hardest-working official in the Foreign Ministry. Today, he was expected to fight tooth-and-nail to prevent effective inspections by the International Atomic Energy Agency.

Another task of Jalili would be to find Western and other suppliers for Iran's nuclear weapons program. The Nuclear Suppliers Group, which monitors nuclear purchases, said Iran has been denied purchases of nuclear-related materials at least 75 times since 1998. Although Iran is a signatory to the Nuclear Nonproliferation Treaty, it does not belong to the suppliers group.

Many of the attempted deals were with companies in the United Arab Emirates. Iran sought electron microscopes, radiometric ore-sorting machines, furnaces, compressors, nickel powder, petrochemical plant components, lasers, a rotary drilling rig, a mass spectrometer and a nitrogen production plant.

During his long tenure at the Foreign Ministry, Jalili worked closely with Mojtaba Hashemi Samare, now one of the closest advisers to Ahmadinejad. Samare, a leading student of Yazdi, rose in the mullah-driven civil service. Samare's job in the Foreign Ministry was to ensure that Iranian diplomats remained devoted to the ruling ayatollahs.

"He soon developed a much-feared reputation for recalling diplomats and even ambassadors whom he suspected of becoming Westernized," an article on the Iranian Diplomacy news agency website reported. "Some were locked inside the basement of the Foreign Ministry for days, where, using interrogation techniques including physical violence, he 're-educated' them."

Yazdi was a member of Hojattieh, a messianic splinter group disbanded by Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini more than 20 years ago. The sect believes that Shi'ites must provoke a global war to hasted the arrival the Shi'ite messiah, known as the Mahdi. At least two ministers in the current Iranian government — Interior Minister Ministry Mostafa Pour Mohammadi and Intelligence Minister Gholam Hosssein Ejehi — were identified as belonging to the messianics.

"The increasing presence of messianics and their allies in high ranking positions inside the Iranian government will make it much more difficult for Western governments to believe that Iran's leadership will at any point in the near future be ready to find a negotiated settlement for the current crisis," Meir Javedanfar, director of Middle East Economic and Political Analysis and a leading analyst on Iran, said.
