A confident Barack Obama raised an extraordinary $7.8 million Sunday at three California fundraisers, most of it in large checks to a Democratic Party committee.
obamanoxious.jpg
"I will win. Don't worry about that," he said to the crowd of about 1,300 at his third event of the evening, according to the pool report.

He was warmly received by House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, who called him "a leader that God has blessed us with at this time."

Obama echoed some of the themes he discussed when he described Pennsylvanians as "bitter" and stoked controversy three months ago, but did so much more adroitly.

"Now, you want to win. And saying it doesn't make it so," he told the crowd. "It would be nice to think that after eight years of economic disaster, after eight years of bungled foreign policy, of being engaged in a war that should never have been authorized and should oba_saint.jpgnever have been waged, that cost us a trillion dollars and thousands of lives, that people would say, let's toss the bums out. Toss the bums out, we're starting from scratch, we're starting over. This is not working."

"So I understand why a lot of folks are saying, this should just happen. Why are we having to run all these television commercials? Why do we have to raise all this money? Just read the papers. These are the knuckleheads who have been in charge. Throw 'em out. But American politics aren't that simple," he said.

"The fact of the matter is, at a certain point, when government has not been serving the people for this long, people get cynical. They tune out. And they start saying to themselves, a plague on both your houses. They are willing to consume negative information more frequently than positive information, for good reason. They've seen how promises haven't been kept," he said.
NRO from his autobiography:
WHAT DOES HE LIKE ABOUT AMERICA?
Candidate Obama claims that "throughout my life, I have always taken my deep and abiding love for this country as a given." He tells us his "heart swells with pride at the sight of our flag." In Dreams, his heart swells at many things but sight of the flag certainly isn't one of them. There he presents a warts-only history of the U.S., a story of evil and suffering. U.S. society is a "racial caste system" where "color and money" determine where you end up in life. He tells us of white children's stoning black children, Jim Crow, and heatless Harlem housing projects. He describes "Japanese families interned behind barbed wire; young Russian Jews cutting patterns in Lower East Side sweatshops; dust-bowl farmers loading up their trucks with the remains of shattered lives."

Obama says the Hawaiian islands, where he grew up, are beautiful, but quickly reminds us that behind the beauty lurks the "ugly conquest of the native Hawaiians . . . crippling disease brought by missionaries . . . the indenturing system that kept Japanese, Chinese, and Filipino immigrants stooped sunup to sunset in [the
fields]."

Candidate Obama proudly tells audiences that his white grandparents were raised in the American heartland. But in Dreams he describes this heartland as the "landlocked center of the country, a place where decency and endurance and the pioneer spirit were joined at the hip with conformity and suspicion and the potential for unblinking cruelty."

Candidate Obama fondly tells audiences that one of his earliest memories is of sitting on his grandfather's shoulders proudly watching the Apollo astronauts return to Hawaii after their splashdown in the Pacific. But in Dreams, even this event is an occasion
for outrage, as Obama asks: "How could America send men into space and still keep its black citizens in bondage?"

And he expects us to think he never heard a mean word from Jeremiah Wright?

Perhaps we should play that back for the 680,000 union casualties responsible for the million plus casualties as a result of the effort which become one to free the slaves. I am profoundly unhappy that we found ourselves permitting slavery in 1789, but we expunged that sin with an ocean of blood 140 years ago.I find it amusing that so many complain (just see the polls) that the jews make too much of the Holocaust after 60 years, but that a presidential nominee errant imagines that HERE, black citizens are in bondage a century and a half later after an effort, then an almost lily white effort to free them, and finally in the 50's an 60's a joint effort to ensure equal opportunity culminating in an attempt by a largely white govt to rectify that former wrong by making them more than equal.

This nation, when a wrong has come to light has by and large been compelled by its own people thru forcing govt to be responsible to them, to rectify it, whether that be slavery, Abu Ghreib, the excesses of Dole and United Fruit, or plain old greed. It is a hallmark of pleasure that human weakness is combatted by the cynical system set up in 1789, not a condemnation of those men and what they created.

DISGRACEFUL, MR. OBAMA.

FAIRNESS DOCTINE: 47% Favor Government Mandated Political Balance on Radio, TV

Nearly half of Americans (47%) believe the government should require all radio and television stations to offer equal amounts of conservative and liberal political commentary, but they draw the line at imposing that same requirement on the Internet. Thirty-nine percent (39%) say leave radio and TV alone, too.

left-right.jpg

At the same time, 71% say it is already possible for just about any political view to be heard in today's media, according to a new Rasmussen Reports national telephone survey. Twenty percent (20%) do not agree.

Fifty-seven percent (57%) say the government should not require websites and blog sites that offer political commentary to present opposing viewpoints. But 31% believe the Internet sites should be forced to balance their commentary

The democrats are going to DO this.

The web will be next.

Believe it.

If this proceeds, in a few years, every blog post will require an equal and opposite view to be published if it can be read at large, or it will not be able to be published. It will only be a matter of time.

Pelosi warns Lieberman for undercutting Obama

Thursday, August 14, 2008

House Speaker Nancy Pelosi blasted Sen. Joe Lieberman on Wednesday for making what she called "totally irresponsible" remarks about Democratic presidential candidate Barack Obama and warned that the Senate might retaliate by revoking Lieberman's committee chairmanship.

Pelosi also chastised some of Hillary Rodham Clinton's supporters for being "less than gracious" toward Obama, although she praised the New York senator for rallying behind the party's nominee after a bitter primary fight.

Pelosi's remark in an interview with KGO Radio talk show host Ronn Owens in San Francisco is certain to anger Clinton backers, including some who are pushing to have Clinton's name placed into nomination at the party's convention in Denver later this month. But the House speaker's rebuke of Lieberman, the Connecticut Democrat-turned-independent, is likely to please Democratic activists, who are irate at Lieberman's sharp jabs at Obama.

Campaigning for Republican John McCain in York, Pa., on Tuesday, Lieberman appeared to question Obama's patriotism when he called the election a choice "between one candidate, John McCain, who has always put his country first, worked across party lines to get things done, and one candidate that has not."

Pelosi was asked by a caller on Owens' show what could be done about the attacks from Lieberman, the Democrats' 2000 vice presidential nominee who, though an independent, still caucuses with the Democrats in the Senate.

"You're right," Pelosi said. "Joe Lieberman has said things that are totally irresponsible when it comes to Barack Obama. Here we have a leader for the future, really a great leader for the future and one that comes along only every now and then, and they know it so they have to undermine him. And one of their best weapons, of course, is someone who is considered by some to be a Democrat."

Pelosi explained that Senate Democrats are leery of challenging Lieberman over his comments because his vote is crucial to preserving the Democrats' 51-49 majority in the Senate. But she warned that Lieberman's top spot on the Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee could be in jeopardy if Democrats gain seats in the Senate in November.

"The Democrats in the Senate are in a tough spot. They have 51 votes. Joe Lieberman organizes with them," she said. "In 85 days or something, they will have five more Democrats. They won't need him to make the majority. And it will be interesting to see what the leadership in the Senate, the Democratic leadership in the Senate, does at that point in terms of Joe Lieberman's chairmanship of his committee."

FCC Commissioner: Return of Fairness Doctrine Could Control Web Content
McDowell warns reinstated powers could play in net neutrality debate, lead to government requiring balance on Web sites.

By Jeff Poor
Business & Media Institute

There's a huge concern among conservative talk radio hosts that reinstatement of the Fairness Doctrine would all-but destroy the industry due to equal time constraints. But speech limits might not stop at radio. They could even be extended to include the Internet and "government dictating content policy."

FCC Commissioner Robert McDowell raised that as a possibility after talking with bloggers at the Heritage Foundation in Washington, D.C. McDowell spoke about a recent FCC vote to bar Comcast from engaging in certain Internet practices - expanding the federal agency's oversight of Internet networks.

The commissioner, a 2006 President Bush appointee, told the Business & Media Institute the Fairness Doctrine could be intertwined with the net neutrality battle. The result might end with the government regulating content on the Web, he warned. McDowell, who was against reprimanding Comcast, said the net neutrality effort could win the support of "a few isolated conservatives" who may not fully realize the long-term effects of government regulation.

"I think the fear is that somehow large corporations will censor their content, their points of view, right," McDowell said. "I think the bigger concern for them should be if you have government dictating content policy, which by the way would have a big First Amendment problem."

"Then, whoever is in charge of government is going to determine what is fair, under a so-called 'Fairness Doctrine,' which won't be called that - it'll be called something else," McDowell said. "So, will Web sites, will bloggers have to give equal time or equal space on their Web site to opposing views rather than letting the marketplace of ideas determine that?"

McDowell told BMI the Fairness Doctrine isn't currently on the FCC's radar. But a new administration and Congress elected in 2008 might renew Fairness Doctrine efforts, but under another name.

"The Fairness Doctrine has not been raised at the FCC, but the importance of this election is in part - has something to do with that," McDowell said. "So you know, this election, if it goes one way, we could see a re-imposition of the Fairness Doctrine. There is a discussion of it in Congress. I think it won't be called the Fairness Doctrine by folks who are promoting it. I think it will be called something else and I think it'll be intertwined into the net neutrality debate."

A recent study by the Media Research Center's Culture & Media Institute argues that the three main points in support of the Fairness Doctrine - scarcity of the media, corporate censorship of liberal viewpoints, and public interest - are myths.

Hillary Clinton was in favor of the return of this.
Nancy Pelosi is in favor of the return of this.
Richard Durbin, John Kerry, John Edwards..all in favor

Barack Obama : ""I hope Congress gets to work right away on reestablishing the Fairness Doctrine with the FCC. There needs to be balance on the airwaves again on radio as well as TV and cable."

Another reason to be dead set against Obama and the Democratic Party at the national level.
All you republicans so pissed off McCain is not perfect, are you paying attention?
Still want Carter II so you can get a Reagan? PLaying dice with the universe????

Here is Joe Klein today in Swampland, from a column more concern with neocon bashing than our democratic ally Georgia being bashed by Russia

To be sure, Russia's assault on Georgia is an outrage. We should use all the diplomatic leverage we have (not all that much, truthfully) to end this invasion, and--as Richard Holbrooke and Ronald Asmus argue in this more reasonable take--help Georgia to recover when it's over
In other words "oh, well..."

It should be clear to every moron in the room that Georgia when this is over, will be Hungary on Dec 1, 1956, will be Kuwait on Aug 5th 1990, will be the Sudentland. There will be no Georgia to HELP RECOVER. They will be a satrapy of Russia.

But what is truly remarkable in this wildly arrow by Klein, is the progressive ranting about neocons when the real problems in the real world progress onwards and all they WANT to do is to emulate the League of Nations the first time around in the USSR's invasion of Georgia in 1924.
"it is realized that the League is incapable of rendering material aid, and that the moral influence which may be a powerful force with civilized countries is unlikely to make any impression upon Soviet Russia."
It is hard enough for realistic people whose principles are enraged by this behavior to find a correct response.

John McCain:

"Russia's aggression against Georgia is both a matter of urgent moral and strategic importance to the United States," said Mr McCain. "The implications go beyond their threat to . . . a democratic Georgia. Russia is using violence against Georgia, in part, to intimidate other neighbours such as Ukraine, for choosing to associate with the west."

Mr McCain's statement - his third since the crisis began - stood in clear contrast on Monday to the relatively low-key response of the Bush administration and the Obama campaign. Barack Obama himself issued a statement on Saturday but remains on vacation in Hawaii. President Bush, at the Beijing Olympics on Saturday, expressed "grave concern" about Moscow's "disproportionate response" in South Ossetia, but did not follow Mr McCain in portraying the crisis as a watershed moment for democracy in the region.

SF Chronicle:
Pelosi blocks offshore drilling vote GOP wants

Friday, August 1, 2008

PelosiGoosed.jpg

For weeks, pressure has been mounting in Congress to approve more domestic oil drilling, but House Speaker Nancy Pelosi has held the line, using her power to block a vote on offshore drilling.

President Bush has made almost daily calls for Democratic leaders to take action. House GOP leaders, citing a new poll showing that a slim majority of Californians now favor offshore drilling, issued a release Thursday saying "even (Pelosi's) own California neighbors oppose her efforts to block new drilling far off American coasts." GOP lawmakers are so disgruntled they're urging Bush to deny Congress its August break by calling a special session on energy.

Unless the USA takes action and is seen to take action to increase energy supplies (drilling, conserving, nukes, wind, solar, battery technology, fuel cell), the most important IMMEDIATE action of which is DRILLING gasoline prices will continue to drain away disposable income as the prudent STOP SPENDING to conserve cash for heating, and the imprudent find themselves OUT OF CASH in February.

resi_pelosi.jpg

Unless the USA takes action and is seen to take action to increase energy supplies (drilling, conserving, nukes, wind, solar, battery technology, fuel cell), the most important IMMEDIATE action of which is DRILLING 70% of our oil will continue to be imported, transferring national wealth to those who not only mean us ill, but also teach we are evil- from right here in the USA.

Unless the USA takes action and is seen to take action to increase energy supplies (drilling, conserving, nukes, wind, solar, battery technology, fuel cell), the most important IMMEDIATE action of which is DRILLING sovereign wealth funds and other national treasuries will exert a growing influence on US national decision making, gradually narrowing the options we might need to take on our own behalf. This very FACT was the subject of a closed congressional hearing this year given by the CIA

Unless the USA takes action and is seen to take action to increase energy supplies (drilling, conserving, nukes, wind, solar, battery technology, fuel cell), the most important IMMEDIATE action of which is DRILLING those people in the USA on fixed incomes and those working people without the means to increase their income proportionally with the devastating rise in every price caused by competition for fossil energy worldwide will find themselves unable to meet their minimal needs and fall to dependence on the govt, which will have to choose between printing money to help, or ignoring their own people.

obamessiah.jpg

Nancy Pelosi and the Democratic party leadership, including Barack Obama, who certainly has the most influence, by their inaction and roadblocks have decided for reasons not yet understood by many scientists, disputed by many scientists, and DISBELIEVED by many scientists, decided we can afford to remove disposable income from a cash constrained America, transfer our wealth to other nations, give other nations a say in our decision making, and place working and retired people in financial jeopardy.

Nancy Pelosi and the Democratic party leadership, including Barack Obama, who certainly has the most influence have demonstrated they are unable to manage the national course - counting energy responsibility as damaging to a future WE WON'T BE ABLE TO COMPETE IN.

John McCain, HERE is your campaign.

It's the economy, stupid

It's national security, stupid

It's national sovereignty, stupid

It economic callousness for working and retired americans, stupid

And Nancy Pelosi and the Democratic party leadership, including Barack Obama, who certainly has the most influence BELIEVE in what they are doing.

I have never been able to help liking Charlie Rangel.

I have voiced my disgust with Ted Stevens, now here is the behavior of the democrats who tabled the process by which corruption in Congress is rooted out as being of the same EXACT party as those moronic debasers of ideals who farted with the processes around Delay-Abramov.
The party of greed.
CharlesRangel.jpg

The House of Representatives decided on Thursday afternoon to table, by a vote of 254 to 138, a Republican resolution to censure Representative Charles B. Rangel, the powerful New York Democrat who is chairman of the Ways and Means Committee. The resolution accused Mr. Rangel of "dishonoring himself and bringing discredit to the House," citing a report in The New York Times on July 11 that Mr. Rangel occupied four rent-stabilized apartments in a Harlem building, including one that he used as a campaign office.

Mr. Rangel, who was elected to the House in 1970 and is the dean of the New York Congressional delegation, has defended his housing arrangements as legal and fair and, in a forceful address to his colleagues, said he had done nothing wrong, urging lawmakers to reject the censure motion. He said he would welcome a review by the House ethics committee into his housing arrangements and into questions about his use of Congressional stationery to promote a $30 million academic center at the City College of New York, his alma mater. The Washington Post reported on July 15 that Mr. Rangel had used the letterhead to ask foundations and corporations to support the center, which will house his papers.
If Rep Rangel, the Chairman of arguably the most powerful House committee did not know he was violating ethics rules, his staff ought to be run out of town. The censure article "accused Mr. Rangel of violating federal law and House rules -- including the House gift ban. The resolution argued that the favorable housing agreement amounted to a gift that Mr. Rangel failed to report. It also argued that Mr. Rangel received an illegal campaign contribution because Sylvia Olnick, an owner of the Olnick Organization, Mr. Rangel's landlord, has given contributions to Mr. Rangel's campaign and to his political action committee."

This argues strongly that the majority of the Ethics Committee will simply go along to get along and we will get precisely what we got today.
Politico details:

The Ways and Means chairman has come under fire in the press recently for renting four rent-stabilized apartments in a Harlem high-rise at below-market rates and using congressional stationery to set up meetings with potential donors for an educational center that bears his name.
Boehner further accuses Rangel of violating House rules for failing to disclose these allegedly reduced rental rates on his financial disclosure forms and violating campaign finance rules for accepting "illegal corporate contributions from the Olnick Organization" -- which owns the Lennox Terrace apartments. The Republican leaders also charges the Ways and Means chairman with violating federal law for failing to disclose "certain contributions from the Olnick Organization."
No doubt the democrats will charge this was simply a pay back attempt to embarrass after the Stevens farce, but it rings hollow.  Boehner doesn't strike me as hyper partisan, a la Delay.
Let's see what occurs in the committee.
I predict a 5-4 outcome as the Harridan of the House cracks her whip. No doubt she feels that THIS is different from Stevens since her party cares about 'equal outcome' and 'social justice'.

super_pelosi.jpgPolitico:
With fewer than 20 legislative days before the new fiscal year begins Oct. 1, the entire appropriations process has largely ground to a halt because of the ham-handed fighting that followed Republican attempts to lift the moratorium on offshore oil and gas exploration. And after promising fairness and open debate, Pelosi has resorted to hard-nosed parliamentary devices that effectively bar any chance for Republicans to offer policy alternatives.

"I'm trying to save the planet; I'm trying to save the planet," she says impatiently when questioned. "I will not have this debate trivialized by their excuse for their failed policy."

"I respect the office that I hold," she says. "And when you win the election, you win the majority, and what is the power of the speaker? To set the agenda, the power of recognition, and I am not giving the gavel away to anyone."
When you can't print checks of magic money fast enough to get them to people who can't afford heating oil, what's the plan NAN?

obamessiah.jpgMy fellow Americans, the surge's military progress is the result of the fantastic efforts of our wonderful men and women, whose sacrifice was made necessary by the largest foreign policy blunder in the history of the republic
That military progress, while measurable, and laudable, has not been completely matched by the political leaders in Iraq
Never the less Iraqi leaders have asked for what I have been urging as a presidential candidate for years, a timetable for withdrawal, something Mr. McCain, continuing in the poor judgment of this administration, still withholds his consent from - this practical, safe, and man sparing measure, in extending needlessy an effort which drew our eye from the ball, Afghanistan, where the war really is.

The death of 9 men today in Afghanistan is iconic of this administration's failure to stay on course in the war on terror. As president I assure you we will bring that war to a sucessful close as we remove men with all speed from the blunder of Iraq.

The awful reality?

"I think we are in a war against Islamic extremism, and I think that war is worldwide" John McCain

It is past naive to think for an instant that this war is to 'get' those few responsible for 9/11. Those few have pointed us to the problem...Jihadism, and what some scholars feel is the Quran itself at the heart of this worldwide aggression. If wars were conducted as individual revenge programs with some rough and 'proportional' 'justice' in mind, well, we could have called off the War in the Pacific on April 18, 1943 when we murdered Isoroku Yamamoto via long range interception of what we knew for a fact to be his airplane by an entire squadron of P-38's. But we did not because an entire structure had to be destroyed, as it is today.

This war is in Afghanistan, as it is in Iraq, in the Phillipines, Thailand, Indonesia, Somalia, etcshermans_1st_law.jpg and by other means as well, by and large, so far in Australia, Britain, France, etc and right here.

The effort to market this war as some easier and safer alternative limited to an area from Qandahar to Mazar-e- Sharif to Kabul, and restricted to police investigation elsewhere can have ONLY ONE RESULT - AS IT HAS ALREADY.

"It's like if you know anyone who's ever a POW for any length of time," the formerbill&monica.jpg president opined in Aspen, Colo., over the weekend, "you will see that [they] go along for months or even years and then something will happen that will trigger all those bad dreams."

Hmmmm....maybe that impeachment was too much, also.

WHAT
A
PIG

Anyone else wonder if Harry Truman made such an ass out of himself during the Eisenhower admin as Carter and Clinton have done?

And these are the people who warn of republican swift boating and smears?

That's three .... Clark, Webb, and now Clinton.
It's Obama.
More than ruthless.
Irresponsible, holier than thou, as HE degrades this into Jackson vs JQ Adams, and 1824 and 1828 all over rolled into one.
It's just a matter of time until McCain's more combative people, and his own nature compel response.
In The Bell Curve Hernstein and Murray made some claims about race and intelligence, based on facts which are emblematic of anathema. In fact, their book was about intelligence being the ultimate marker of status in American society. In passing, some statistics they rest their conclusions on were not flattering to 'certain' groups. Some have used this to claim that black Americans are inferior IN FACT to other American groupings when in comes to intellectual abilities.

I find this disgusting, and actually a cute manipulation, and as we all know, we can force a stat to say just about anything and claim it as a fact.

So what, one wonders would be the American reaction if among his foreign policies advisers, John McCain had voluntarily appointed were several to all, who believed in varying degrees, in such 'facts'?

What would be said about HIS inner belief set?

It would be, of course impossible to vote for him, and I imagine there would not be a single black American voting for him.

Yet we have seen Barack Obama exhibit EXACTLY this behavior, and yet american jews SUPPORT this man. Principles advisers are unashamed to claim they believe the conclusion American Jews act together in an inchoate fashion to the detriment of America and the benefit of Israel. As a group. Are to blame for the lack of peace in the middle east.

Why is this acceptable?

Why is it acceptable for other Americans to accept racists like McPeak and, Brezhinski (and uniformly lesser tasked others) and not question Mr. Obama's inner belief set when it comes to jews? And Israel?

Based not on his absurd current verbiage hewing desperately towards the center, but on the few actions we have seen him voluntarily make?

These men and women by and large still serve inthe positions Mr. Obama appointed them to.

What is it in Mr. Obama's belief set that allows this?
This poll purports to claim the vast majority of americans want neutrality for the USA in the eternal war between Islam and the jews (and everyone else).

TEHRAN, July 1 (MNA) - In an e-mail interview with the Mehr News Agency on Monday, Barack Obama's nuclear policy advisor, Joseph Cirincione, said the next U.S. president should "engage Iran in a full and open dialogue without preconditions."

Joseph Cirincione also said the U.S. is not "cooperating" with EU foreign policy chief Javier Solana in his dealings with Iran.

American Thinker
Cirincione had written after Israel's strike against the suspected Syrian nuclear plant that stories about it being a North-Korean designed and built plutonium reactor were a lie -- a fiction being spread just as reports had been spread before the Iraq War that misled the press regarding Iraq's program. Schoenfeld writes:
Who was behind this nefarious manipulation? It appears, wrote Circincione, "to be the work of a small group of officials leaking cherry-picked, unvetted 'intelligence' to key reporters in order to promote a preexisting political agenda." What exactly was that political agenda? "[I]t appears aimed at derailing the U.S.-North Korean agreement that administration hardliners think is appeasement." There was also a dose of Zionist mischief thrown in: "Some Israelis want to thwart any dialogue between the U.S. and Syria."
Every day we are ASSAULTED by forces which seek to nefariously and by misdirection ERODE our thought process towards objective reality. This 'poll' is just one more effort.

This ENTIRE effort, poll, and the news around it represents was EASILY uncovered. So howcome it's schmendricks like me and not YNETNEWS AND INN?

NEW YORK --  Amnesty International is currently touring the country with a life-sized replica of a maximum security prison cell at Guantánamo Bay. But critics say the cell, which is an attempt to call attention to alleged human rights abuses at the camp, is missing basic amenities provided to prisoners.

The 7x10-foot cell, on display on the National Mall in Washington, D.C., lacks amenities like bedding, toiletries and a copy of the Koran, and it has nothing to illustrate that regular meals are served to inmates three times a day.

Released Guantanamo detainee behind March suicide truck bombing at Combat Outpost Inman in Mosul

Al Qaeda in Iraq, through its puppet organization the Islamic State of Iraq, released its latest propaganda video on June 23. The video contains a montage of attacks throughout Iraq, and features two Kuwaiti al Qaeda operatives who conducted strikes in Mosul. One of the operatives was released from the US military prison in Guantanamo Bay, Cuba. The Islamic State of Iraq used footage taken at Combat Outpost Inman by this reporter in Mosul in March of this year.

Exclusive: No ice at the North Pole

Polar scientists reveal dramatic new evidence of climate changenorth_pole_ice.jpg

Friday, 27 June 2008

It seems unthinkable, but for the first time in human history, ice is on course to disappear entirely from the North Pole this year.

The disappearance of the Arctic sea ice, making it possible to reach the Pole sailing in a boat through open water, would be one of the most dramatic - and worrying - examples of the impact of global warming on the planet. Scientists say the ice at 90 degrees north may well have melted away by the summer.

"From the viewpoint of science, the North Pole is just another point on the globe, but symbolically it is hugely important. There is supposed to be ice at the North Pole, not open water," said Mark Serreze of the US National Snow and Ice Data Centre in Colorado.

If it happens, it raises the prospect of the Arctic nations being able to exploit the valuable oil and mineral deposits below these a bed which have until now been impossible to extract because of the thick sea ice above.

Seasoned polar scientists believe the chances of a totally icefreeNorth Pole this summer are greater than 50:50 because the normally thick ice formed over many years at the Pole has been blown away and replaced by hugeswathes of thinner ice formed over a single year.

Ok,..so I see lots of 'melting' right? I mean, they printed the graph..so it must be factual, right?

Ocean levels?

Additional moisture in the atmosphere?

Where is it? Maybe with the Iraqi WMD's ?

Why oh why is it that the Independent has not asked?

Maybe this is right and the north pole is melting, but fewer questions by the supposedly skeptical  are being asked of these scientists than were directed at Colin Powell
Why?
NO EXCUSES.
(The Politico) One of the most curious exchanges in today's testy hearing in the House Judiciary Committee was this exchange between Rep. Wiliam Delanhunt (D-Mass.) and David Addington, chief of staff to Vice President Cheney.

Addington had acknowledged earlier in the hearing that he took part in discussions with CIA lawyers over the agency's interrogation policies. Delahunt tried to find out what Addington knew about the use of waterboarding on suspected Al Qaeda terrorists, or more specifically, whether Addington knew it was approved as an interrogation technique.

Addington told Delahunt he couldn't discuss specific techniques being used, or even discussed for use, by CIA agents because terrorists may be watching his appearance and would gain insight into what U.S. intelligence agents are up to.

"You kind of communicate with Al Qaeda if you do. I can't talk to you because Al Qaeda may watch C-SPAN," Addington said.

Delahunt responded: "I'm sure they are watching. I'm glad they finally have a chance to see you, Mr. Addington, given your penchant for being unobtrusive."

Republicans aren't too happy with Delahunt's joke.
No, really?

GERTZ - Gulf states in negotiations for THAAD missile defense systems

PARIS -- Several Persian Gulf states have been examining a new U.S.-origin missile defense system as Iran's strategic threat looms in the region.

But none of the six Gulf Cooperation Council states were expected to win approval to purchase the Terminal High Altitude Area Defense System from Lockheed Martin. Industry sources said the United States would probably not approve any international sales of THAAD until the first missile defense units were delivered to the U.S. Army in 2009.

Tthe Terminal High Altitude Area Defense (THAAD) Weapon System is scheduled for fielding by 2009. Once fielded, THAAD will network with other systems and sensors to provide the layered missile defense capability required for the future. The program is managed by the Missile Defense Agency (MDA). "We're in the marketing phase," Shirley Grey-Lewis, THAAD business development director at Lockheed Martin, said. "I see international sales taking place only after the delivery of the first THAAD unit. But I wouldn't refuse [a sale now]."

In May 2008, industry sources said the UAE was negotiating with Lockheed Martin for a THAAD system. The sources said an agreement in principle was expected within months.

Lockheed Martin executives said they were discussing the sale of THAAD to several GCC states. The executives said several of the states, particularly, Kuwait, Saudi Arabia and the UAE, regarded THAAD as a complement to their Patriot missile and air defense systems.

"Any country that has PAC [Patriot] would be interested in THAAD," Ms. Grey-Lewis said.

The executives said Israel has also been discussing procurement of THAAD. They said THAAD has been demonstrated to be compatible to both the U.S.-origin PAC-3 and the Israeli Arrow-2 missile defense system.

In a briefing at the Eurosatory defense exhibition in Paris, Lockheed Martin said THAAD has completed a series of tests against unitary Scud-class missile targets. In 2008, the company would test THAAD against missiles with separating warheads.

"The system is operating exactly as it was designed to operate," Ms. Grey-Lewis said.
