More, WAY MORE, than three quarters of a trillion dollars and it may not even stop the bleeding ....or work at all...the people who style themselves the government have not yet figured out that the crisis of confidence is that THEY have lost credit with US. They have saile dover the edge, and it's clear from this crisis, which rather than showcasing the strengths of parties coming together in good will, instead exposed the weaknesses of corruption, partisanship, and failure to take responsibility.
Oct. 6 (Bloomberg) -- Federal Reserve Chairman Ben S. Bernanke may find the next
fronts of the financial crisis to be just as chilling as last month's downfall of Wall Street titans: its spread to corporate America and state and local governments.
Companies from Goodyear Tire & Rubber Co. and Duke Energy Corp. to Gannett Co. and Caterpillar Inc. are being forced to tap emergency credit lines or pay more to borrow as investors flee even firms with few links to the subprime-mortgage debacle. California Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger says his and other states may need emergency federal loans as funding dries up.
A cash crunch on Main Street would endanger companies' basic functions -- paying suppliers, making payrolls and rolling over debt. The widening of the crisis suggests that Bernanke and Treasury Secretary Henry Paulson may have further fires to put out even as the Treasury sets up the $700 billion financial- industry rescue plan approved last week.
Hey, the large multinational company I work with has put out authoritative forecasts which have turned out to be bunk, and now, it appears that equipment leases will not be available. So through no fault of my own, my cash forecasts indicate that federal aid is required. I figure that to make payroll and expenses, and not help in freezing the local economy, $1 million is required.
Chump change.
How about you out there?
Be responsible now, ask for enough so that you can be adult and keep this economy moving.
``The rest of the economy is clearly being affected right now by the tightness of credit,'' said Kurt Karl, chief U.S. economist at Swiss Reinsurance Co. in New York. ``It's just gathering momentum in the wrong direction.''
The market for commercial paper, which typically matures in 270 days or less and is used to help pay for expenses such as payroll and rent, shrank to a three-year low of $1.6 trillion in the week to Oct. 1, Fed data show.
Gannett, the largest U.S. newspaper publisher, said Oct. 1 it drew on a revolving credit line to ensure it had funds to repay its commercial paper.
Duke, Caterpillar
Duke Energy, the owner of utilities in five U.S. states, last week tapped about $1 billion from a $3.2 billion credit agreement after concluding it may not be able to meet its plan for new financing. Caterpillar, the biggest maker of earthmoving equipment, had to pay the biggest premiums over Treasuries in at least three decades at a sale of five-year and 10-year notes.
``Credit is the lubricant that oils the engine of the economy'' and if it dries up ``then the engine seizes up,'' said Republican Representative Michael Conaway of Texas, who switched his vote last week to support the financial rescue. The inability of a major corporation to renew its short-term loans would have ``a devastating impact on the economy.''
Even as confidence grew that Congress would pass the bailout, banks hoarded cash, indicating the proposed purchases of devalued mortgage assets may not be able to stop the credit crunch from widening.

F-22s in high demand by Asian allies; U.S. balks out of deference to China
East-Asia-Intel.com, April 10, 2008The Pentagon is continuing to block sales of its frontline F-22 jet aircraft despite demands for the plane from such key allies as Japan and Australia, according to U.S. officials. The F-22 is considered the most advanced aircraft in the American arsenal and is a key element of the Pentagon's "hedge" strategy against China. The stealth fighter bomber is believed to have unmatched capabilities to penetrate Chinese air defenses and thus is viewed by Beijing as a major threat.
Australia's government said publicly in March that it wanted to buy the F-22, and Japanese officials have appealed directly to President Bush for the aircraft, which can carry very large bomb loads over long distances.

F-22s [ZOOM]
However, political considerations, namely fears of upsetting China, are key factors in turning down the requests. The Bush administration has adopted conciliatory policies toward China and fears that F-22 sales would provoke Beijing.
What are we afraid of, no more cheap flip flops at Walmart?
Well, maybe more along the lines of deterrence w rgd to Taiwan where a large proportion of our motherboards etc. are coming from.Chinese military writings have stated that the F-22 is part of a plan by China's enemies to encircle the communist power and contain its rise.
Washington has told Japan that before it considers selling the F-22, Tokyo must first disclose its plans for dealing with a future threat from China.
Okay, that's interesting. Especially since the Japanese have been FAR more determined and realistic w rgd to NoKo than we have been, but they HAVE suffered some serious security leaks of critical naval secrets we share with them in the last year or so.
The F-22 is barred for export under 1998 legislation designed to prevent the export of sensitive U.S. technology. However, the Air Force would like to produce an export version of the F-22. The service hopes to buy nearly 400 of the advanced jets.
That's what the Air Force may hope, but moronic deputy Sec Gordon England of the Coughlin affair says 183 will do to replace all 800+ F-15's we have. So soon, I suppose, we will develop an aircraft which can defeat the world, so we will need only one.
Defense Secretary Robert M. Gates said in February that he has not examined the export of F-22s to Australia because of the legislation. He noted that "the complications would be the question about whether a new design would be required for export."
Asked if the lack of any similar action on Japan's request for F-22s signaled that the Pentagon is not taking a proactive stance on the request, Gates replied: "l would say that's a fair statement."
Add Israel to that mix.
On balance I think the more of these that are in the hands of allies will benefit us, EVEN IF we have to create an export version...so why delay...START NOW. At worst parts commonality will drive the price our those we buy down significantly, and considering how much more of ALL BUDGETS now go into fuel, we had better be thinking straight, lest we turn into 18th century Spain.

Whoopsi, sorry folks, but we quietly want to let you know that the lunatic asylum which hasn't been able to feed itself in a generation because it's maintaining the 5th largest or so armed forces in the world, run by a cognac loving recluse who has a movie theater in his house, where he can sip and dream of Reese Witherspoon thighs, really HAS a working ICBM because in case we get schlonged in this theater of operations, of if something unknown lands in Santa Monica , we want to be sure we can say we told you so.DIA NOW classifies 2006 North Korean test as ICBM
East-Asia-Intel.com, March 6, 2008North Korea did not claim its 2006 firing of a long-range missile was a space launch vehicle, as it did following a 1998 launch, and the launch was assessed as a missile test, the director of the Defense Intelligence Agency said last week.
DIA Director Lt. Gen. Michael Maples was asked by senators whether the failed launch of a Taepodong-2 in July 2006 was a space launch or an ICBM.
"There's the inherent capability. If you can launch a satellite, it can be a ballistic missile. There are all kinds of reentry problems to it," Maples said.
The 1998 Taepodong launch was explained by Pyongyang as a space launch, but the 2006 launch, which failed, was not so characterized by North Korean state-run media. U.S. intelligence regards the test as demonstrating it had "the inherent capability to be a ballistic missile."
Maples was commenting on questions from Sen. Carl Levin (D-MI), a vehement opponent of U.S. missile defenses who apparently sought to seek information to discount the need for U.S. missile defenses.
The Pentagon activated its global missile defense system prior to the July 2006 test and was prepared to shoot down the Taepodong had it not failed.
But don't worry.....
OK, they suck, but they did it, so they can't suck THAT much, twit.DNI on North Koreans' plutonium: They have 'enough for 12' nukes
East-Asia-Intel.com, March 6, 2008North Korea is believed to have produced up to 50 kilograms of plutonium, enough for between six and 12 nuclear bombs, the director of national intelligence said last week.
"The estimate is they're not very good at it; therefore, they would [need to] take more of it," DNI Mike McConnell said. "So the better guess is six, but it could be 12."

Director of National Intelligence Mike McConnell testifies in Washington, on Feb. 27. AP/Manuel Balce Ceneta
Jane's Defense Week this week says Secretary of DefenseAsked about North Korea's admission in 2002 that they had a covert uranium enrichment program, McConnell said: "We have high confidence that they had a highly enriched uranium program."
"I mean, there's no ambiguity about that, in our estimation, based on the evidence that we had at hand," he said.
McConnell said a North Korean statement in 2002 was intended for negotiating ground and was presented as a hypothetical. The comment was viewed by some as an admission while other analysts dismissed it as not necessarily an admission. "So that's the reason there was confusion around what he said," McConnell told the Senate Armed Services Committee.
"One thing I've discovered about North Koreans is they have no idea of truth. It's not in their makeup. So when you're having a discussion, it's always how am I getting advantage, and so on," he said.
Why don't we just stay with the 70's aircraft, that way if we get in a fight, it will be 'fair'.
What kind of words pass thru the minds of these men that they convince themselves they really have a clue? I would say replacing 751 F-15's with 300+ F-22's is fiscally conservative enough. 183 is a joke. This admin is perceived as strong on defense? What is going on?

Church, rail workers join Serb boycott in Kosovo
Mon Mar 3, 2008 7:47am EST
By Matt Robinson
PRISTINA, March 3 (Reuters) - The influential Orthodox Church and
railway workers on Monday joined a widening Serb boycott of Kosovo
following its declaration of independence from Serbia last month.
The Church instructed all priests in the Albanian majority territory
to end all contact with the capital Pristina, the European Union
mission taking over supervision of Kosovo and representatives of
countries that have recognised its secession on Feb 17.
The Church should "not have contact or hold any kind of discussion
with representatives of these institutions or countries, nor receive
them or respond to their invitations," Bishop Artemije wrote, state
news agency Tanjug reported.
Backed by Russia, Serbia rejects Kosovo's secession and is instructing
the new country's 120,000 remaining Serbs to do the same, worsening
the ethnic divide and raising fears Kosovo is heading for de facto
partition.
Over 200 Serb police officers have been suspended and handed in their
weapons, badges and radios after refusing to take orders from the
Kosovo Police Service command in Pristina and demanding they report
only to the United Nations police.
Border posts in the Serb-dominated north have been attacked,
preventing the collection of customs taxes, and Serbs are bidding to
take control of the main U.N. court in the north by preventing its
Albanian staff from travelling to work.
The EU's Kosovo envoy, Dutch diplomat Pieter Feith, accused Serbia on
Friday of trying to sever ties between the 90-percent Albanian
majority and minority Serbs, a move he said was "coming very close" to
a bid for partition.
RAIL WORKERS
Early on Monday, the train travelling from Kosovo Polje in central
Kosovo to Lesak in the far north was stopped at the northern Zvecan
station as soon as it had crossed into Serb-dominated territory.
Around 50 Serb workers in the Kosovo Railway said they had "separated"
from the Pristina headquarters.
"We have decided, as the northern department, to separate from the
Kosovo Railway in Pristina because, for us, Zvecan is still Serbia,
and will remain Serbia," said railway worker Ivan Konstadinov.
Branislav Ristivojevic, head of the state Serbian Railway company and
an adviser to Serb Prime Minister Vojislav Kostunica, said the company
would "take over responsibility" for the railway infrastructure north
of Zvecan.
Serbia lost control over its then southern province in 1999, after
NATO bombed to halt the killing and ethnic cleansing of Albanian
civilians by Serb forces in a two-year war against separatist guerrillas.
Serbia cherishes Kosovo as the cradle of the nation, where Serb
history and myth dates back 1,000 years and old monasteries dot the land.
The European Union is taking over policing and supervision of the new
country, but faces a challenge to impose its rule in Serb areas,
notably the north where Serbs dominate.
Serbia is promising to rule parts of Kosovo where "loyal citizens"
continue to look to Belgrade for government. (Additional reporting by

The F-22 is the replacement for the F-15 Eagle air superiority and attack aircraft designed in the late 60's and early seventies and built in the seventies.About 900 F-15's were built. It began in service in 1972.The Future of the F-22 Raptor
U.S. Air Force (USAF) Gen. Bruce Carlson, commander of the Air Force Materiel Command, insisted Feb. 13 that the USAF will find a way -- one way or another -- to buy 380 fifth-generation F-22 Raptor stealth fighters. This is in direct contravention to the position of U.S. Deputy Defense Secretary Gordon England, who contends that the current 183-airframe buy is sufficient, and that the line should start shutting down next year.
Mr. England is not merely the dupe of people he foolishly trusted like Hesham Islam, but also the seminal former of dangerously stupid opinions.
Unless the the Air Force doesn't have enough money for food, it is absolutely DANGEROUSLY STUPID to imagine that 183 F-22 can replace the ~900 F-15A-D's the US needed.
It's hard to believe that 380 can do the job, let alone less than half that number.
AnalysisWith a new U.S. administration headed for the White House in 2009, the Pentagon is having some internal battles over the future of a production line that is inching toward closure: the fifth-generation F-22 Raptor stealth fighter. U.S. Deputy Defense Secretary Gordon England has argued in front of Congress to prevent an extension of the F-22 production run on his watch, while Commander of Air Force Materiel Command Gen. Bruce Carlson insisted Feb. 13 that the U.S. Air Force (USAF) will find a way to buy more than twice the number of F-22s currently slated for purchase.
Ultimately, this is maneuvering not just ahead of the inauguration of the 44th president but before a Congress looking to show that it is strong on defense -- and perfectly happy to allot additional funds related to the matter to members' states and districts. Nevertheless, it will be the next administration upon which the final decision about F-22 production will rest.
Americans who vote, are you getting this?
Fine, so what are those budgets and plans? Are we betting the ranch on that?Politics aside, this is a choice about the future force structure of the USAF. The F-22 has been two decades in the making, and it promises to be the final word in air superiority throughout the next decade and beyond. Air superiority is, of course, one of the core longstanding missions of the USAF, and one that allows all other U.S. military operations to proceed supported and unimpeded.
But in making procurement decisions, the Pentagon is forced to look out beyond that horizon. The decision to buy the F-22 -- be it 180 airframes or 380 -- is in part a projection of force structure requirements in the 2025 time frame. However many F-22s the USAF determines it will need, it must make that decision now.
Once stopped, production is expensive to restart. There is no cheaper time to buy F-22 airframes than right now, when production is up and running at full capacity. Not only are research and development costs spread across more aircraft but production costs also can actually drop as manufacturers fine-tune techniques and gain experience with the design. (A single F-22 is running about $360 million, factoring in development costs; the production price itself has been steadily declining and is now pegged at around $140 million per aircraft.)
These F-22s will replace more than 500 (still flyable, not grounded) F-15A/B/C/D models -- some of which are showing serious signs of premature aging. The F-22 production run will be followed by a much more extensive F-35 Lightning II buy (formerly known as the Joint Strike Fighter program), currently anticipated to be on the order of 1,700 aircraft for the USAF alone. The F-35 has been conceived in part as a much more economical alternative to the F-22 (although the costs of the F-35 have been climbing at a disturbing rate and already have crept past $80 million per aircraft).
On one hand is the need to procure sufficient aircraft to absorb attrition (because of not only the age and wear-and-tear issues the USAF is accustomed to today but also the potential for significant combat losses in a future fight). On the other is the fact that the obsolescence of each F-22 and F-35 is installed with its ejection seat; while the constraints the human body's limitations put on combat aircraft are not new, the maturation of automated unmanned aerial systems has accelerated significantly in the last decade.
Thus, the Raptor and the Lightning II increasingly are likely to be the last two manned combat fighter jets in the inventory. The decision before the USAF, then, is not simply which wars likely will be fought in the next 30 years, but also how soon unmanned combat aerial systems will begin to eclipse the manned aircraft fleet.
CARACAS, Venezuela (AP) - President Hugo Chavez on Sunday threatened to cut off oil sales to the United States if Exxon Mobil Corp. wins court judgments to seize his government's assets.
"If you end up freezing (Venezuelan assets) and it harms us, we're going to harm you," Chavez said. "Do you know how? We aren't going to send oil to the United States. Take note, Mr. Bush, Mr. Danger."

Exxon Mobil has gone after the assets of state oil company Petroleos de Venezuela SA in U.S., British and Dutch courts as it challenges the nationalization of a multibillion dollar oil project by Chavez's government.
A British court has issued an injunction "freezing" as much as $12 billion in assets.
"The outlaws of Exxon Mobil will never again rob us," Chavez said, saying the Irving, Texas-based oil major acts in concert with "the imperialist government of the United States" and is part of corporate "worldwide mafias."

Tell me again why we have a CIA?

State Department officials, led by assistant secretary Christopher Hill, are scrambling to salvage the North Korea nuclear accord from failure after Pyongyang missed three deadlines to fully disclose its nuclear program. The North Koreans provided what State officials said was an “incomplete” declaration of nuclear weapons programs that made no mention of EvKorea’s uranium enrichment program, the covert program that first triggered the crisis.
There is no way. Our state dept should just be made to deal with the UN and the whole bunch of them should just be in Geneva, or Basel with easy access to France. The whole world would be a better place. Are they this naive or do they simply wish to be so ineffective as to harm the USA? How could ANYONE take the North Koreans seriously on doing away with a functioning nuclear weapons program?
State officials are not concerned with actually seeing North Korea dismantle its nuclear arms program and are mainly concerned with continuing the “process” of the six-nation talks, according to critics of the process.

U.S. Assistant Secretary of State Christopher Hill arrives at the Beijing airport on Jan. 10, to discuss the North Korea nuclear issue with his Chinese counterpart. AP/Ng Han Guan
“They are not interested in a deal that will actually produce a de-nuclearized agreement,” said one U.S. official close to the process.
State Department Undersecretary Nicholas Burns (who thank goodness has now resigned-Epa) is a key force behind the failed nuclear talks, along with Hill, who spent last week in Asia attempting to salvage the February 2007 agreement.
Hill said in Tokyo Jan. 7 that North Korea must declare 100 percent of its nuclear programs. “We don't need a 90 percent declaration; we need a 100 percent declaration," said Hill.
Otherwise we will write a really mean letter to them and make them feel bad
Even though the entire planet detected a nuclear detonation there. What use is the state dept, besides as a shill for the Al Saud to create a terrorist state of Sunnis in the west bank? Ms Rice, take it away...."They have not provided a complete and correct declaration. By that I mean that they have not included all of the nuclear programs they have, they have not included all the nuclear facilities they have," he said.
"A partial declaration is really no declaration at all," Hill said after talks with his Japanese counterpart in the six-nation talks, Kenichiro Sasae.
U.S. intelligence agencies have evidence of North Korean highly enriched uranium, but Pyongyang continues to deny having any uranium enrichment.
How incredibly disappointing a level this administration has sunk to in foreign affairs! They have absolutely NO credibility. Not to us and not to our enemies.

GORE-TEX

With the headlines and angst not just on Wall Street but expressed at exit polls during the primaries we have had BEFORE this 'thing' became the gigantor of election year fears...we now have the candidates and congress 'doing something' about the sub prime crisis which threatens to to rob this economy of disposable income, and equity and bathe 2008 in a newer fear than Adam Gadahn's marching stupidities. We will not be worrying about Al Qaeda, the MMA, Pakistan, and Ahamdinejad if every 8th house has a 'for sale' sign, and corporations buy nothing and create no new positions in order to conserve cash, I promise, you.Millions (anyone have a real number, btw?) of americans are seriously delinquent (60 days plus?) on their sub prime mortgages. Congress and the candidates now feel they have to 'do something'. Whatever it is, it had better be a non zero sum solution. So far the fed has been lowering rates to keep injecting cash into the system, more cash = some more inflation - how much is anyone's real guess, but in the outer world, where the perception rules that still means 'we are cheapening the dollar', and the Al Saud get paid in value which is less than yesterday. Of course and as usual it's all wrong
since injecting cash does not cure lack of confidence, and more liquidity for american consumers might the only thing to allow us to support the economy and keep affording the gasoline and the $$ flowing to the Al Saud so they can print more books about the fornicating, jew controlled kufrs that have to die anyway.Nevermind that for moment. Here is the Financial Times on some legislative ideas.
Well, well, right? Suppose we do this? You are now sitting in Citibank and 5% of your mortgages just legally were dropped back the levels that they were signed at, instead of the ballooned rate. You are now missing x% of your planned cash for the what....year, 5 years, life of the mortgages? Well since the courts just became an agent of increasing the risk in mortgages, we all know what capitalism's real answer has always been to increased risk, don't we? Of course 'Citigroup' (we'll use them as the perceptive villain for everyone who joined with them) created the increased risk to begin with with their 'product'.Beyond the election-year rhetoric, most insiders who have stakes in the foreclosure mess, from bankruptcy lawyers and mortgage servicers to global investment banks, are keeping a close eye on Congress.
Specifically, they are watching the Emergency Home Ownership and Mortgage Equity Protection Act of 2007, a controversial proposal that was created by a compromise between Democrats on the House judiciary committee and Republican Steve Chabot of Ohio, who was the only Republican to vote in favour of the bill when it passed the committee late last year. The proposal, which House Speaker Nancy Pelosi has vowed to take up early this year, would allow homeowners to modify the mortgage of their primary residence in court under bankruptcy. Under current law, judges can only modify mortgages on second homes. Passage of the bill, Mr Chabot and Democratic sponsors say, could save hundreds of thousands of homeowners from foreclosure.
Mr Chabot’s support of the bankruptcy bill, which faces tough opposition from banking lobbyists, underscores the changing political current in Washington. Just three years ago, Mr Chabot was a strong advocate of sweeping bankruptcy legislation that limited protection and was hailed as a victory for business lobbyists and the Bush administration. Now, he is seeking to expand bankruptcy protection.
Some analysts say they believe that even the most conservative Republicans in Congress could support the legislation if it is narrowly targeted and will keep voters from losing their homes – even if it contradicts “free market” principles.
So we have Bush and Bernanke doing what the DEMS agree with, and we have the dems and repubs in congress creating a situation in which while the fed lowers rates to inject $$, the banks increase rates to make up for what the judges do to save homes for people who should NEVER have been sold mortgages, any more than a Mercedes. The major benefit aside from these people having homes, is that they can then pay the rest of their bills, and buy a washing machine or two.
Here's Hillary in NH...
In the meantime, none of this makes the other war any easier to fight or win.Experts say voters generally oppose taxpayer-funded bail-outs, though they will also want to stop whole neighbourhoods from suffering under the weight of the subprime crisis. At a town hall meeting last week in Merrimack, New Hampshire, Hillary Clinton, the presidential candidate, was quick to point out in response to a question about personal responsibility that she had little sympathy for speculators in the housing market. But she conceded that the crisis could have a “cascading effect” on the economy that had to be stemmed, even if it meant that some who “should have known better” would be given relief. “Where we can intervene more quickly to prevent it [the economy] from falling off a cliff, we should do that,” she said.
Lobbyists who are familiar with the bill ( Emergency Home Ownership and Mortgage Equity Protection Act of 2007) say they believe it will pass the House, but it is unclear whether it will win approval in the Senate. The White House has not said it would fight the proposal, but proponents of the bill said privately that they believed the Bush administration would side with critics who claim it would have unintended consequences.
The Mortgage Bankers Association, which is fighting the proposal, says that if judges are allowed unilaterally to change terms of a mortgage contract lenders will face “new uncertainty” when valuing homes, increasing the interest rate on future mortgages.
However, supporters of the legislation, including the non-partisan Center for Responsible Lending, say the bill represents one of the simplest ways to help families trapped in “exploding” adjustable-rate mortgages in which interest payments increase rapidly.
What happens when a significant proportion of the homes in your neighborhood go up for sale? What happens when the don't sell? What happens when the value of the mortgage then exceeds the value of the house? Do you know anyone who has just sold a house, THEIR HOUSE, and then shows up at closing with a check?
If foreclosures are not stopped, NEIGHBORHOODS of responsible people will be devalued.
The credit market is already crushed unless you are rated as high as US Bonds are today, that is a market based on fear right now.
To restore confidence to the public, the bill must be passed. But we cannot lose sight of the fact that the excesses of the credit market in creating the subprime floating rate mortgage and the consumers they sold it to are the cause here. Typically in our society, when corporate excess occurs (such as price fixing, etc) the citizens find it compulsory to organize to protect themselves in the form of law.I am very sorry to say, it's time to consider this, and study the issue with regard to this specific problem.
An america awash in foreclosed mortgages, and an economy paralyzed with lack of confidence and outright fear will not win this war.
IHT -Drastic steps from Citigroup and Merrill Lynch
Tuesday, January 15, 2008NEW YORK: Citigroup and Merrill Lynch - two of the largest U.S. financial institutions - announced a series of drastic steps Tuesday as they grappled with more fallout from the subprime mortgage morass.
Beginning what is expected to be a grim week for financial company earnings, Citigroup announced a $9.83 billion loss for the fourth quarter.
Citigroup also said that it would cut in its stock dividend by 41 percent and receive a $12.5 billion cash infusion to strengthen its balance sheet, including big investments by its former chairman, Sanford Weill, and the Government of Singapore Investment Corp. Citigroup further said it was writing down $22.2 billion because of soured mortgage-related investments and bad loans.
Merrill Lynch, meanwhile, said it was getting a fresh cash investment of $6.6 billion to strengthen its balance sheet, led by the Korean Investment Corp. and Kuwait Investment Authority, both state-owned entities, and Mizuho Corporate Bank, a Japanese investment bank, The Associated Press reported.
Facing rising expenses and deepening losses, Citigroup is expected to embark on a major cost-cutting campaign that could result in at least 4,000 layoffs. And thousands more could be in the offing in the coming months.
How can the morons at Citigroup look in the mirror without seeing Ken Lay? How can Merrill Lynch have believed the crap they tell the suckers they call everyday to spend money with them, on their advice?
The write-downs caused Citigroup to swing to a loss for the fourth quarter. Revenue fell 70 percent, to $7.22 billion from $23.83 billion. The loss was in contrast to a profit of $5.1 billion in the period a year earlier.
The write-downs included $18.1 billion from a sharp drop in the value of mortgage-related securities and heavy trading losses. The company also set aside an additional $4.1 billion to cover expected losses from bad loans.
Times UK -
The three wealthiest Japanese finance houses are set to step into the worsening sub-prime carnage as the “silent investment partners” of Wall Street and Europe's stricken banking titans.
Senior sources at the “big three” Tokyo megabanks told The Times that they had readied a combined cashpile of as much as $10 billion (£5 billion) and were open to negotiation with any struggling Wall Street bank that approached them for a cash infusion.
Mitsubishi UFJ (MUFJ), Mitsui Sumitomo Financial Group (SMFG) and Mizuho Financial - banks that have been scarred only very lightly by the sub-prime crisis in the United States - are understood to have already opened preliminary talks with several American firms.
One MUFJ insider said that his firm was planning to compete directly with the leading Asian sovereign wealth funds as a long-term investor in the troubled American banks. The Japanese banks, flush with cash and desperate to find ways of raising their return on capital, are keen to become central players in what some predict will be an all-Asian solution to the sub-prime woes contorting America and Europe.
Now, just imagine you are a small to mediun sized business owner and you are reading all this every day? Tell me what you are buying this year? Well, what will that do? So you're going to put off all those upgrades to Vista, huh?
And cancel that Dell order for those 12 Duo-Cores, and while we're at it, we'll limp along with that old analog copier another year instead of a spiffy new digital color machine. Hey, maybe I better increase the employee participation % in the health plans so I can reserve more cash, just in case. I know it will do a double whammy on their buying and saving power with the fuel prices which are driving up every cost they they have, but what choice do I have? Besides if I don't do this and things REALLY tighten, maybe I won't have to let so many go if I act now?
Where does that thinking lead us all?Hey Citigroup, Merrill, Countrywide.....this partly japanese solution demands an ancient japanese tradition from those who bought us here.

Ron Paul's continuing LACK of frank disavowal of STORMFRONT, and DeWinter's LACK of frank disavowal ofNeo-Nazi complains about Ron Paul's denial of ties to white supremacists
American Thinker has extensively covered the troubling links between Ron Paul's campaign and neo-Nazis. For our trouble we were blasted by some critics, and subjected to a torrent of abusive letters from Ron Paul supporters. But now, an apparently genuine Neo-Nazi, Bill White, Commander of the American National Socialist Workers Party is fed up with the campaign's mild distancing and disavowal, and claims on a neo-Nazi website, the Vanguard News Network, that he has attended meetings with Paul at both a Thai restaurant in Arlington, and in his official office.
Charles Johnson of Little Green Footballs has assembled links to corroborating evidence
It's time for Mitt, Rudy, Fred, John and every other candidate to PIN Mr Paul to the wall and END a republican candidate who is SO connected to Stormfront's money and endorsements LIVE on every single soundbite, debate and invterview ..."WHEN, MR. PAUL will you explain and excoriate your involvement with STORMFRONT and the endorsements and money they produce for your benefit? WHY, MR. PAUL have you not acted already? WHO in your organization belongs to such groups? How many times have you met with such supporters?"
Why are these questions not asked?
From a neo nazi ...
ENOUGH! Ron Paul has no business running on the republican side, or the democratic side.Comrades:I have kept quiet about the Ron Paul campaign for a while, because I didn't see any need to say anything that would cause any trouble. However, reading the latest release from his campaign spokesman, I am compelled to tell the truth about Ron Paul's extensive involvement in white nationalism. Both Congressman Paul and his aides regularly meet with members of the Stormfront set, American Renaissance, the Institute for Historic Review, and others at the Tara Thai restaurant in Arlington, Virginia, usually on Wednesdays. This is part of a dinner that was originally organized by Pat Buchanan, Sam Francis and Joe Sobran, and has since been mostly taken over by the Council of Conservative Citizens.I have attended these dinners, seen Paul and his aides there, and been invited to his offices in Washington to discuss policy. For his spokesman to call white racialism a "small ideology" and claim white activists are "wasting their money" trying to influence Paul is ridiculous. Paul is a white nationalist of the Stormfront type who has always kept his racial views and his views about world Judaism quiet because of his political position.I don't know that it is necessarily good for Paul to "expose" this. However, he really is someone with extensive ties to white nationalism and for him to deny that in the belief he will be more respectable by denying it is outrageous - and I hate seeing people in the press who denounce racialism merely because they think it is not fashionable.Bill White, Commander

Where the religion of the majority trumps secular 'law' as a joke from Morocco to China? Where the official law of millennial ages makes OFFICIAL second class citizens out of OTHER?NO, of course not, the always ready Euro trash historical response always is evocative of one group.
The group who rejected Christ, caused earthquakes, famines and plagues, was expelled from virtually every European nation (some several times) because they were just a bit too different for the tribal ignoramuses and their suspicions, and finally after being accused of spying in a national scandal so pathetic, one man actually dreamed that it could all end if only these easily spat upon tiny remnant of a people could have their own nation. Sorry Theodore, WRONG on that one. Men's ignorance might be masked by a more sophisticated response, but the object is the same. Same as the Council of Nicaea, or 1348, or now. GET THEM JEWZ, BOYZ!What the Catholic 'Leader' is so upset about is not one of the SCORES of muslim states, it's the JOOOOOOOZE which for the millionth time attracts the negative attention of the catholic church. It's just all so boringly familiar. Stupid.
One would have thought that the catholic church of today in recognizing their role and responsibility for the suffering of millions of jews across 2+ millenia, by what they taught and incited would recognize the exceptional case of what is probably the smallest montheistic religion by population on the planet, partly of a result of European ignorance, and church lead persecution.
Benedict STEP on this moron.
In his address, which he read in Arabic and English, Sabbah said Israel should abandon its Jewish character in favor of a "political, normal state for Christians, Muslims and Jews."

Israel says Hezbollah can hit Tel Aviv (and apparently the UN can't disagree)By EDITH M. LEDERER, Associated Press Writer Wed Oct 31, 8:16 PM ET
UNITED NATIONS - Israel alleges that Hezbollah militants in Lebanon have rearmed with new long-range rockets capable of hitting Tel Aviv and tripled their arsenal of land-to-sea missiles since last summer's war, the United Nations secretary-general said in a report Wednesday.
Ban Ki-Moon said the reports of Hezbollah's rearming are a cause of great concern for the stability of Lebanon.
"Israel has stated that the nature and number of weapons in Hezbollah's control constitutes a strategic threat to its security and the safety of its citizens," he said.
Israel claims Hezbollah's long-range rocket force is stationed in areas north of the Litani River and that most of the new rockets, including hundreds of Zilzal and Fajr generation rockets, have a range of 155 miles, "enabling them to reach Tel Aviv and points further south," the report said.
"Israel also claims that Hezbollah has tripled its shore-to-sea C-802 missiles and have established an air defense unit armed with ground-to-air missiles," Ban said.
While Israel has not provided the United Nations with specific intelligence due to the sensitivity of the sources, Ban said several speeches by Hezbollah's leader Hassan Nasrallah in the past few months "seem to confirm these Israeli claims."
Human race will 'split into two different species
Last updated at 16:18pm on 26th October 2007
The human race will one day split into two separate species, an attractive, intelligent ruling elite and an underclass of dim-witted, ugly goblin-like creatures, according to a top scientist.
100,000 years into the future, sexual selection could mean that two distinct breeds of human will have developed.
The alarming prediction comes from evolutionary theorist Oliver Curry from the London School of Economics, who says that the human race will have reached its physical peak by the year 3000.

No doubt they are the Eloi and the Morlocks
And we then degenerate into TRUE stupidity for this "Bravo Evolution Report" from the London School of Economics (RU KIDDING ME?)
These humans will be between 6ft and 7ft tall and they will live up to 120 years.
"Physical features will be driven by indicators of health, youth and fertility that men and women have evolved to look for in potential mates," says the report, which suggests that advances in cosmetic surgery and other body modifying techniques will effectively homogenise our appearance.
Men will have symmetrical facial features, deeper voices and bigger penises, according to Curry in a report commissioned for men's satellite TV channel Bravo.
Women will all have glossy hair, smooth hairless skin, large eyes and pert breasts, according to Curry.
I sincerely hope that this study did not cost more than $3.95
US might delay missile defense sites
PRAGUE, Czech Republic - The United States might delay activating its proposed missile defense sites in EuropeDefense Secretary Robert Gates said Tuesday, until it has "definitive proof" of a missile threat from Iran,

At a news conference after meeting Czech Prime Minister Mirek Topolanek, Gates said this was a proposal to the Russians — who strongly oppose U.S. missile defense — that has yet to be worked out in detail.
"We would consider tying together activation of the sites in Poland and the Czech Republic with definitive proof of the threat — in other words, Iranian missile testing and so on," Gates said with Topolanek at his side.

Terrorist Demand - Send me to the Care Rehabilitation Center in Riyadh, and hold my spot at the pool
Next time I slit someone's throat, remind to shout Allahu Akbar and wear my dishdasha ...Call it the anti-Guantánamo. Young Saudis are captured in Iraq waging jihad against the American infidels. But instead of being shipped off to a bleak detention camp in Cuba, they are dispatched to a cozy chalet an hour outside the Saudi capital of Riyadh. Technically it's a detention center, but no one is forced to wear an orange jumpsuit or a blindfold. And far from being condemned to solitary confinement, its occupants are free to roam the landscaped courtyard and play Ping-Pong, volleyball and video games.
Welcome to the Care Rehabilitation Center, part of a three-year-old experiment to reform malleable minds who have fallen under the sway of Osama bin Laden's radical brand of Islam. To get here, jihadis have to demonstrate during a prison interview a readiness to rethink their extremist views. (About 20% of the 1,875 holy warriors invited to participate have refused.) The program, developed by a team of Islamic scholars, psychiatrists and sociologists, tries to convince these men of their mistakes and make them productive members of Saudi society, which has been rocked by terrorism: al-Qaeda attacks have killed 144 people there over the past four years. By not treating the detainees as criminals, the center seeks to avoid reinforcing their radicalism and turning them into role models for more jihadis.
Hey, maybe it's a 12 step program ..and they have to ask forgiveness from Deborah Burlingame
Although the perimeter is guarded by police, the facility feels like a country club or college campus. Detainees have lots of downtime and soda pop. They spend their days in vocational training, psychological counseling and classroom lectures, most of which are given by religious scholars from the Ministry of Islamic Affairs, including the center's director, Sheik Ahmed Hamid Jelan. He walks the detainees through religious texts on jihad--a theological minefield, considering that while the Saudi government forbids fighting in Iraq, it once recruited young Saudis like bin Laden to fight the Russians in Afghanistan. The basic difference, Jelan explains to his charges, is that fighting the Soviets served the interests of Saudi Arabia and the Muslim world, while struggling against the U.S. in Iraq does not. "We answer all the questions about al-Qaeda concepts by referring to the Koran and the message of Islam," says Jelan. "We have dialogue. They become convinced."
Can competing motives, partisan desires, and sheer ego make things worse? (Well actually, check out 1830-1860). Frankly, I would have a hard time voting for this TODAY, because of our men, and our needs vs Iran (and in Iraq), but let me tell you, I predict the Turks have dug a DEEP HOLE for themselves in the heart of the American people with this. Perhaps we would be far better off with a Kurdistan, and unconditional allies (at least for now).
Support Wanes in House for Genocide Vote WASHINGTON, Oct. 16 — Worried about antagonizing Turkish leaders, House members from both parties have begun to withdraw their support from a resolution supported by the Democratic leadership that would condemn as genocide the mass killings of Armenians nearly a century ago.
Almost a dozen lawmakers had shifted against the measure over the last 24 hours, accelerating a sudden exodus that has cast deep doubt over the measure’s prospects. Some representatives made clear that they were heeding warnings from the White House, which has called the measure dangerously provocative, and from the Turkish government, which has said House passage would prompt Turkey to reconsider its ties to the United States, including logistical support for the Iraq war.
Until today, the resolution appeared to be on a path to House passage, with strong support from the House speaker, Nancy Pelosi of California. It was approved last week by the House Foreign Affairs Committee. But this evening, a group of group of senior House Democrats had made it known they were planning to ask the leadership to drop plans for a vote on the measure.
“Turkey obviously feels they are getting poked in the eye over something that happened a century ago, and maybe this isn’t a good time to be doing that,” said Representative Allen Boyd, a Florida Democrat who dropped his sponsorship of the resolution Monday night. .
Others who took the same action said that while they deplored the mass killings of Armenians by the Ottoman Empire, beginning in 1915, the modern-day consequences in the Middle East could not be overlooked.
“We simply cannot allow the grievances of the past — as real as they may be — to in any way derail our efforts to prevent further atrocities for future history books,” said Representative Wally Herger, Republican of California.
“I think it is a good resolution and horrible timing,” said Representative Mike Ross, Democrat of Arkansas.
Prediction - an invasion of northern Iraq by Turkish forces followed by them staying (i.e occupation) will result in the formation of Kurdistan, harming Turkey, and Iraq. Kurdistan will be a strong democratic ally of the USA, and the rest of Iraq will disintegrate slowly.
Turkish General Issues Warning on Bill ISTANBUL, Turkey (AP) - Turkey's top general warned that ties with the U.S., already strained by attacks from rebels hiding in Iraq, will be irreversibly damaged if Congress passes a resolution that labels the World War I-era killings of Armenians a genocide.
Oct 14 10:27 PM US/Eastern
By C. ONUR ANT
Associated Press WriterTurkey, which is a major cargo hub for U.S. and allied military forces in Iraq and Afghanistan, has recalled its ambassador to Washington for consultations and warned that there might be a cut in the logistical support to the U.S. over the issue.
Nomatter what provocation the Turks believe this is, the US Congress, and govt in full, as well as the american people respected (while grumbling) the decision of the Turkish parliament in 2003 when they refused to allow the 4th Infantry Division to cross a portion of their nation to get to Iraq. It is INCUMBENT on them as democratic allies, and NATO members to RESPECT equally the decision of the American representative system as well.
"If this resolution passed in the committee passes the House as well, our military ties with the U.S. will never be the same again," Gen. Yasar Buyukanit told the daily Milliyet newspaper.
That is an exceptionally threatening statement, and is to be completely rejected by Congress.
That is no NATO ally.
Despite the general's strong words, it is not clear how far Turkey will go to express its dismay to Washington.
Turkey suspended its military ties with France last year after the French parliament's lower house adopted a bill that that would have made it a crime to deny that the Armenian killings constituted a genocide.
But there is more at stake for NATO's only Muslim member when it comes to its relations with the U.S. The Turkish military, and especially the air force, is heavily dependent on the American defense industry, experts say.
Still, when Washington imposed an arms embargo against Turkey in 1975 due to a dispute over Cyprus, Turkey ended all its logistical support to U.S. troops and sharing of intelligence until the embargo was lifted, said Onur Oymen, the country's former permanent representative to NATO.
STUNG BY ARMENIAN RESOLUTION, TURKEY MULLS OPTIONS
Stung by the House Foreign Affairs Committee’s October 10 approval of a resolution characterizing the massacres and deportations of Armenians by the Ottoman authorities during World War I as a genocide, Turkish politicians and journalists are unanimous that Turkey needs to react. But there is no consensus on how it should respond. Indeed, since the motion was approved, newspaper commentators have spent considerably more column inches criticizing the decision or trying to analyze why it happened rather than thinking through specific responses and their possible repercussions.
The only substantive measure that has been widely discussed is the possibility of Turkey abrogating the agreement whereby the United States currently uses the airbase at Incirlik in southeast Turkey to provide its forces in Iraq with non-lethal supplies. However, most of the advocates of abrogating the agreement appear to be more interested in punishing Washington for the motion than changing U.S. attitudes and policies (Radikal, October 12). Nevertheless, there is little doubt that the closure would have the support of the overwhelming majority of the Turkish people, including, according to a survey conducted by CNNTurk, of both Turkish employees at Incirlik and the local tradesmen who are dependent on the US presence at the base for their livelihood (CNNTurk, October 15).
On October 14, in an interview with the daily Milliyet, Turkish Chief of Staff General Yasar Buyukanit described the approval of the motion as the United States “shooting itself in the foot,” and warned that it would harm bilateral military ties (Milliyet, October 14). However, on October 15, in his column in the same newspaper, Semih Idiz, who had recently returned from U.S., reported that the many people in Washington believed that the Turkish threats were mere bluff. Idiz called on the Turkish authorities to take concrete measures to prove the doubters wrong, although he did not specify what the measures should be (Milliyet, October 15).
Turkish school textbooks teach children to identify themselves not only with the present, but also with the past. The Turkish authorities have long suppressed open debate about what happened to the Armenians. As a result, few Turks are aware of the extensive evidence and eyewitness reports of the killings and deportations, but they are bombarded with photographs and accounts of the relatively small number of revenge massacres by Armenians against Muslims. Consequently, given the majority of Turks’ limited knowledge of what actually happened, from the Turkish perspective the resolution was regarded not just as a distortion of history but as a gratuitous insult.
The Turkish-U.S. Business Council has already announced that it has cancelled a planned conference in the United States. Turkish Foreign Trade Minister Kursad Tuzmen has declared that he has indefinitely postponed a scheduled trip to the U.S. (Turkish Daily News, October 15).
However, several columnists have noted that even if the Turkish authorities add substantive sanctions to such gestures of disapproval, the most long-lasting impact of the October 10 resolution is likely to be on the Turkish public’s perceptions of the United States (Ferai Tinc, Hurriyet, October 12). Sami Kohen, the doyen of Turkish foreign policy commentators, entitled his column in Milliyet on October 15 “How the U.S. lost Turkey.” He predicted that, regardless of any specific measures taken by the Turkish government, the greatest damage to the U.S. would be that Washington would no longer be able to count on Turkey as a reliable ally. Meanwhile, the ultranationalist Yeni Cag has announced that it will run a serialized analysis entitled “The U.S.: The Enemy that Appears to be a Friend” (Yeni Cag, October 15).
Sami, I have a flash for you... as of 2003 you were no longer a reliable ally, but we let it go. This is all MORE AND MORE EVIDENCE that all this is a true disgreement of people's, and another brick on the other side of the scale for those who have been saying that what occurred in 1915 is a puzzle piece of Islam, was Jihadi genocide, and that what we see in Turkey today as being VERY POPULAR is further evidence of an ALREADY EXISTING UNBRIDGEABLE (TODAY) DISAGREEMENT AT THE CIVILIZATIONAL LEVEL. LET IT GO, TURKEY. The perception here is not that we 'lost' Turkey, it's that Turkey 's peoples have fallen for the siren song of islamism as the larger part of this, and that nothing on this earth could have or can change that but them.
However, other journalists have concentrated more on trying to understand why they believe the U.S. has now turned against Turkey. Tufan Turenc in Hurriyet noted that even long-time supporters of Turkey had begun to have second thoughts about the country’s reliability after the ruling Justice and Development Party (AKP) hosted Hamas leaders in Ankara in 2006 (Hurriyet, October 15). Umit Enginsoy commented that Jewish Americans, who were once among Turkey’s leading supporters in Washington, had now turned against Ankara and that seven of the eight Jewish members of the Foreign Affairs Committee had voted for the October 10 resolution. While Milliyet observed that, with the exception of a statement by 460 Azeri NGOs condemning the resolution, none of what Turkey used to describe as its “sibling nations” in the Caucasus and Central Asia had reacted publicly and that the Azeri response was hardly surprising, seeing that 20% of the country’s territory is currently occupied by Armenia (October 15).
But, amid the outrage and fury, some members of the Turkish media are prepared to admit that those in the United States who believe that all Washington has to do is ride out the storm may have a point. Radikal newspaper observed that there was widespread public outrage when the French parliament passed a similar resolution in 2000, including a consumer boycott of French goods and the exclusion of French companies from Turkish military tenders. However, not only did the anger rapidly fade, it had little long-term impact on French interests. In 2000, when the resolution was passed, annual Turkish imports from France stood at $3.5 billion, dropping to $2.3 billion in 2001 before rising to $3.1 billion in 2002, $6.2 billion in 2004, and $7.2 billion in 2006 (Radikal, October 12).
However, even if the measures do not have any long-term impact, public feeling in Turkey is so strong at the moment that the AKP government will have to do something. The only question is whether it will implement substantive sanctions or whether it will restrict itself to symbolic gestures in the hope that the resolution can be prevented from ever coming before the full House.--Gareth Jenkins

Lobbying for an enhanced U.S. defense relationship with Israel keeps getting tougher.Conservatives and national security advocates understand the need for a reliable and democratic ally in the Middle East. But the Israel of Prime Minister Ehud Olmert, which has been promoting a unilateral withdrawal from the West Bank, is becoming more difficult to promote in the Bush administration and Congress because of the weakness of and divisions within the Jewish state.
"You have leading Israelis tied to the Olmert government actually sabotaging efforts to promote a strong Israel in Washington," a pro-Israel Christian activist said. "It's clear that Olmert has a different agenda than previous Israeli leaders."
Indeed, Olmert has been more comfortable with the anti-Israeli Jewish lobby than with the traditional groups such as the American-Israel Public Affairs Committee and the Jewish Institute for National Security Affairs.
Akiva Eldar, a confidante of the Olmert government and political commentator for Israel's Haaretz daily, was invited by the anti-Israel Americans for Peace Now to attack the Bush administration policy in the Middle East. In an address last week, Eldar sounded like the most vicious of anti-Semites who peddle the canard that Jews own America.

Eldar????
Haaretz Editor Says "The Settlers" Control Israel Lobby
by Ezra HaLevi(IsraelNN.com) For the second time in the course of four weeks, a senior editor of ultra-leftist Haaretz has openly given voice to his radical agenda.
This time it was Akiva Eldar, the paper's senior political editor, who endorsed the recently published book "The Israel Lobby," which alleges that a powerful network of lobby groups and Jewish organizations induce the US to pursue policies that are against its best interests.
The Oxford Research Group said that any U.S.-British war with Iran would plunge the Middle East into violence. A report by the think tank concluded any U.S. air strike would invite Islamic retaliation against Western interests throughout the region.
"Going to war with Iran will make matters far worse, playing directly into the hands of extreme elements and adding greatly to the violence across the region," the report, released on Monday, said. "Whatever the problems with Iran, war should be avoided at all costs."
Last time I checked, war meant -be prepared to get hurt, but prepare to END THE ENEMIES EXISTANCE, because the point of the war was to effect just exactly that.
The report was released as the British government was said to be discussing war options against Teheran with the United States. British media reports said Prime Minister Gordon Brown has pledged that the British military would help Washington in any attempt to destroy Iran's nuclear weapons program.Oh. Ok. Who is the Oxford Research Group? The Oxford Research Group urged a reassessment of the Western military strategy against Islamic adversaries. The report said the war against Al Qaida and its allies was failing and called for a Western withdrawal from Afghanistan and Iraq.
"If the Al Qaida movement is to be countered, then the roots of its support must be understood and

systematically undercut," said Paul Rogers, the report's author and professor of global peace studies at Bradford University in northern England. "Combined with conventional policing and security measures, Al Qaida can be contained and minimised but this will require a change in policy at every level."
Entitled "Alternatives to the War on Terror," the think tank said Iran and its ally Syria must be wooed by the West through diplomacy. Rogers said Islamic insurgency groups in Afganistan should be granted aid in an attempt to turn them into political partners.
"Failure to make the necessary changes could result in the war on terror lasting decades," the report said.
.
Got it?
Root causes?
Absolutely delusional group. Remember their name
Nixon and Carter.
US President George W. Bush's administration tortures detainees in defiance of international law, former US president Jimmy Carter charged Wednesday."I don't think it, I know it, certainly," Carter told CNN television when asked if he believed the US administration allowed the use of torture.
Carter rejected Bush's statement last week that the United States does not torture terror suspects.
"That's not an accurate statement, if you use the international norms of torture as has always been honored, certainly in the last 60 years, since the Universal Declaration of Human Rights was promulgated," Carter said in the interview.
Now of course we all understand that Carter is probably talking about waterboarding, a process which I find uncomfortable to contemplate and one which I personally can't envision doing to another human. PERHAPS UNLESS I was convinced my brother and sister Americans were about to be killed and the individual in front of me was both culpable and could end that threat. PERHAPS. I probably couldn't be ordered to do it and then say I was following orders. Administrative punishment, or punishment for insubordination would be an honor instead of standing before others saying 'I VAS ONLY VOLLOVING ORDERZ'. However, from this end, I have no problems with the men who ordered and carried out the waterboarding of men like KSM or Ramsay Bin Al Shib. After all, while causing great discomfort, no permanent damage is done, nor is the individual in danger, or maimed, or even in pain...you are scared you are going to drown, which is what all your senses are telling you. What is it Mr. Carter thinks was going on on Peleliu, or Guadalcanal, or Anzio, or Arnhem?"But you can make your own definition of human rights and say, 'we don't violate them.' And ... you can make your own definition of torture and say 'we don't violate it,'" said the former Democratic president and Nobel laureate.
Asked if Bush was lying, Carter said: "The president is self-defining what we have done and authorized in the torture of prisoners, yes."
J Carter who would rather, apparently see his brothers and sisters taken violently by force, and be ineffectual in rescuing them, and who has problems deterring rabbits has standards too high to be effectual in that job. In any case he sees more danger in George Bush and the men determined to see our civilization survive and prevail than in our enemies.
Perhaps he is just meant for another kind of world. Unfortunately we are all in this one, and that explains his presidency in 'one swell foop'. Imagine what the politburo was thinking as plans were made in 1979 for Afghanistan, or as they contemplated the fate of the Russian Spetznaz troops they had infiltrated into Cuba in violation of their agreements of 1962. They probably never took him seriously.
Well one thing has changed.
Today, our enemies listen to him carefully.
Mr. Carter, your legacy sinks daily, another several feet into the mire at the bottom of Lake Erie. Shut up.
The only discomfort you are causing is that which our enemies' satisfaction causes us. You know, the people trying to kill us.
Leak Severed a Link to Al-Qaeda's Secrets
Firm Says Administration's Handling of Video Ruined Its Spying EffortsBy Joby Warrick
Washington Post Staff Writer
Tuesday, October 9, 2007; A01A small private intelligence company that monitors Islamic terrorist groups obtained a new Osama bin Laden
video ahead of its official release last month, and around 10 a.m. on Sept. 7, it notified the Bush administration of its secret acquisition. It gave two senior officials access on the condition that the officials not reveal they had it until the al-Qaeda release.
Within 20 minutes, a range of intelligence agencies had begun downloading it from the company's Web site. By midafternoon that day, the video and a transcript of its audio track had been leaked from within the Bush administration to cable television news and broadcast worldwide.
The founder of the company, the SITE Intelligence Group, says this premature disclosure tipped al-Qaeda to a security breach and destroyed a years-long surveillance operation that the company has used to intercept and pass along secret messages, videos and advance warnings of suicide bombings from the terrorist group's communications network.
If a democratic administration was responsible for this kind of leak, or Dick Durbin's office (for instance), cries of TREASON would fill the air.
"Techniques that took years to develop are now ineffective and worthless," said Rita Katz, the firm's 44-year-old founder, who has garnered wide attention by publicizing statements and videos from extremist chat rooms and Web sites, while attracting controversy over the secrecy of SITE's methodology. Her firm provides intelligence about terrorist groups to a wide range of paying clients, including private firms and military and intelligence agencies from the United States and several other countries.
The precise source of the leak remains unknown. Government officials declined to be interviewed about the circumstances on the record, but they did not challenge Katz's version of events. They also said the incident had no effect on U.S. intelligence-gathering efforts and did not diminish the government's ability to anticipate attacks.
While acknowledging that SITE had achieved success, the officials said U.S. agencies have their own sophisticated means of watching al-Qaeda on the Web. "We have individuals in the right places dealing with all these issues, across all 16 intelligence agencies," said Ross Feinstein, spokesman for the Office of the Director of National Intelligence.
You just have VERY LIMITED CREDIBILITY on this, don't you get it, admin? Hasn't the experience over the 'immigration' issue demonstrated this to you?
But privately, some intelligence officials called the incident regrettable, and one official said SITE had been "tremendously helpful" in ferreting out al-Qaeda secrets over time.
The al-Qaeda video aired on Sept. 7 attracted international attention as the first new video message from the group's leader in three years. In it, a dark-bearded bin Laden urges Americans to convert to Islam and predicts failure for the Bush administration in Iraq and Afghanistan. The video was aired on hundreds of Western news Web sites nearly a full day before its release by a distribution company linked to al-Qaeda.
Computer logs and records reviewed by The Washington Post support SITE's claim that it snatched the video from al-Qaeda days beforehand. Katz requested that the precise date and details of the acquisition not be made public, saying such disclosures could reveal sensitive details about the company's methods.
SITE -- an acronym for the Search for International Terrorist Entities -- was established in 2002 with the stated goal of tracking and exposing terrorist groups, according to the company's Web site. Katz, an Iraqi-born Israeli citizen whose father was executed by Saddam Hussein in the 1960s, has made the investigation of terrorist groups a passionate quest.
"We were able to establish sources that provided us with unique and important information into al-Qaeda's hidden world," Katz said. Her company's income is drawn from subscriber fees and contracts.
Katz said she decided to offer an advance copy of the bin Laden video to the White House without charge so officials there could prepare for its eventual release.
She spoke first with White House counsel Fred F. Fielding, whom she had previously met, and then with Joel Bagnal, deputy assistant to the president for homeland security. Both expressed interest in obtaining a copy, and Bagnal suggested that she send a copy to Michael Leiter, who holds the No. 2 job at the National Counterterrorism Center.
Administration and intelligence officials would not comment on whether they had obtained the video separately. Katz said Fielding and Bagnal made it clear to her that the White House did not possess a copy at the time she offered hers.
Around 10 a.m. on Sept. 7, Katz sent both Leiter and Fielding an e-mail with a link to a private SITE Web page containing the video and an English transcript. "Please understand the necessity for secrecy," Katz wrote in her e-mail. "We ask you not to distribute . . . [as] it could harm our investigations."
Fielding replied with an e-mail expressing gratitude to Katz. "It is you who deserves the thanks," he wrote, according to a copy of the message. There was no record of a response from Leiter or the national intelligence director's office.
Exactly what happened next is unclear. But within minutes of Katz's e-mail to the White House, government-registered computers began downloading the video from SITE's server, according to a log of file transfers. The records show dozens of downloads over the next three hours from computers with addresses registered to defense and intelligence agencies.
By midafternoon, several television news networks reported obtaining copies of the transcript. A copy posted around 3 p.m. on Fox News's Web site referred to SITE and included page markers identical to those used by the group. "This confirms that the U.S. government was responsible for the leak of this document," Katz wrote in an e-mail to Leiter at 5 p.m.
Al-Qaeda supporters, now alerted to the intrusion into their secret network, put up new obstacles that prevented SITE from gaining the kind of access it had obtained in the past, according to Katz.
A small number of private intelligence companies compete with SITE in scouring terrorists' networks for information and messages, and some have questioned the company's motives and methods, including the claim that its access to al-Qaeda's network was unique. One competitor, Ben Venzke, founder of IntelCenter, said he questions SITE's decision -- as described by Katz -- to offer the video to White House policymakers rather than quietly share it with intelligence analysts.
"It is not just about getting the video first," Venzke said. "It is about having the proper methods and procedures in place to make sure that the appropriate intelligence gets to where it needs to go in the intelligence community and elsewhere in order to support ongoing counterterrorism operations."
Those are an inarguable set of facts.
The puzzle around those facts, except for the delusional, is that whatever those docs were, they were not flattering about the plans, beliefs and judgments of Bill Clinton and his associates over foreign affairs.
Today amid the hub-bub over this man being an 'unpaid adviser' to the new-old Clinton for foreign affairs a host of unpleasant questions arise, and de-rigeur partisan responses fill the air.
Why would Hillary use such a man NOW? Blackmail over whatever was in the destroyed docs? Arrogance? Stupidity? Or belief in the soft power, avoid problems and punt them down the temporal line to the next prez theory as a guiding light?
Rejecting this entire thesis is the democratic line that people like Eliot Abrams convicted in 1991 on two misdemeanor counts of unlawfully withholding information from Congress during the Iran-Contra Affair investigation serve in the govt today under Bush.
But let's look at what the difference is.
Abrams withheld information on operations dedicated to what he believed was national security. Berger stole and destroyed historical records which, more likely than not, demonstrated the Clinton Admin's lack of fervor for actions in defense of just exactly that.
One is belief that he is taking a hit for the team (the team being the USA).The other is saving the skins of a departed group from embarrassment and calumny.
I am one who believed that nomatter her clearly socialist leanings on domestic issues, Ms Clinton was someone who would put her hair up and KILL EVERY SOB trying to kil us.
Given her use of Mr. Berger I no longer consider that to be true.
There is now in the field no democrat I believe has any shred of credibility on national security.
Not one.
Nor one with the temerity to tell Moveon/Soros off, even to make it LOOK GOOD, and quietly pass the message that it's just for PR.
Who among them will stand up for the USA among the West European allies when they are carping about something we did or didn't do? Who will not attempt to assuage and appease them or those who hate us for cultural and religious reasons? Who will push back when the third world's false propaganda machine churns out how we have ?% of the world's population but use 99.999999% of its resources? Who will put on the brakes forcefully when morons in Brussels march to protest that our lack of support for Kyoto is killing the world? Who will put such ideas on the spot for AMERICA?
Some of these candidates make amends with Syrian Dictators while blaming us and our allies for the world's problems. All of them kowtow to a man who says that the USA is the preventer of peace and justice in the world, and believed that even to attack Afghanistan in 2001 was wrong. One wonders if a man who accepted Somoza as a dictator in Nicaragua would have been acceptable to such a man as he who controls Moveon, Media Matters, the Open Society Institute Groups, and the Center for American Progress.
Not one of these Democrats is fit to be president today. The only one who had any bona fides in this vein, is of course no longer one. Significantly he was claimed by a (self proclaimed) member of Ted Kennedy's staff - to me- on line- to be a spineless coward, and probably a criminal.
As hideously predicted, the Moveon ad, which btw is no overreach, but represents the heart and soul of what they consider their better morality, and are burning to tell us all they really feel, has generated no negative response from ANY of the Harry Reid-ite, I'm bending over for you, simpering, fear struck, and terrorized Democratic candidates when one is CLEARLY called for. Even Ms Hill.
Hillary Clinton has ruled herself out for me, and she had the benefit of the doubt on foreign affairs side of things from me. But shockingly, Rudy has struck home with a point.
If Hillary (or any of them) cannot stand up to Moveon, who will they stand up for when it's not just critical, but civilizationally unredeemable if you don't.
How fast will they wither for the support of the morally unravelled western european govts and their soft power, and the snickering smiles of the oil nations? How fast will they justify the credo of Hassan Abbasi of Iran, who advises the mullahs?
So I have a small thought, from another western european...
"You have sat too long here for any good you have been doing! Depart, I say, and let us have done with you. In the name of God, go!"
It took the national democrats less than a year to get me to feel this way. Despite all the stunning incompetence (beginning with the lack of holding people accountable at Tora-Bora), and misplaced loyalty to friends of the Bush admin (too big a list for here), I have more confidence in them, than in you, democrats.
The lot of you look and are craven before a bunch of arrogant, morally superior, holier than thou, cultural shouters, with some money and campaign workers. How will you fare against the arrogant, morally superior, holier than thou, cultural shouters with allegiance to the ascendant forms of Islamism, whose beliefs give them permission to kill your people unless you accede to their words and deeds?
This, 'misperformance', with Moveon has, very unfortunately, provided the answer.
U.S. Congressman and Presidential Candidate Dennis Kucinich: The U.S. Must Pay Reparations to the People of Iraq
WORSE IN BLACK AND WHITE THAN THE ORIGINAL STORY
"It was a meeting where President Assad showed a real desire to play a role in helping to create a peaceful settlement of the conditions in Iraq, as well as a grander approach towards creating peace. So it was a very important meeting, and I felt honored to have the chance to speak with him."
We need to see that there is honest reconstruction in Iraq, no Halliburton dishonest cheating of the people of Iraq and the people of the United States – the taxpayers.
The truth is that we have to reach out to the world to get help
The fact of the matter is we are all being weakened by continuing a war that's based on a lie
It is an extraordinary gesture on the part of the Syrian government that they would provide an opportunity for people to save their lives. And so this is something that I think needs to be recognized. And it also shows that here is a man, President Assad, who should be respected and appreciated for the role that he has played.
We also must pay reparations to the people of Iraq
RAMSAY CLARK, GEORGE GALLOWAY, NOAM CHOMSKY, and a democratic candidate for president. Think the other will rebuke him for what MOVEON (Money $trings) really thinks?
And in SYRIA!
Well....
"Look, I know from experience that there's no such thing as a military solution to a situation like this, and no amount of "metrics" can create one"
This is what happens when you turn your back and they all turn into 'jenjis kong'.
John do yourself a favor, go have lunch with dhimmi Carter and both of you concentrate on not embarrassing the democratic party, the nation and your 12 step recovery groups, whatever they may be.
To my knowledge, no one has reported anything officially. Except Katie Couric.
So sit down and stfu
It used to be interesting as to whether those who followed the romanticized idea of Fukuyama (history as we knew its cycles, ended) were correct, or the seemingly 'warmongers' who believed that Samuel Huntington was probably on the right track were correct.
Now it seems thats unless a nation is military defeated in the way that Germany and Japan were defeated, FLAT ON THEIR BACKS, and unable to perform the most basic tasks, except for intercession of the victor, the situation is actually WORSE than Huntington portrayed it. There exists both a world wide religious war of civlizational dimension, and the same national rivalries which lead to massive wars in the past. To this we can add insane strategic weapon sales to aggressive players in the religious war by one rival.
As you read this remember, that last new strategic ballistic missile deployed by the USA occurred in 1986, and it's been almost completely retired. We now retain about 50 strategic missiles of this kind. We also have launched NO NEW NUCLEAR BALLISTIC MISSILE SUBS, or deployed new missiles for them.
RUSSIA: "This year we will continue test and combat-training launches of new types of warheads for the Topol-M and Bulava sea-launched missile complexes"
The Topol is a newly deployed, BRAND NEW, mobile ICBM.
The Bulava is a missile for a brand new YET TO BE DEPLOYED SSBM missile submarine fleet.
MOSCOW, September 1 (RIA Novosti) - Russia's Strategic Missile Forces will conduct more tests of new warheads for its intercontinental ballistic missiles later this year, the SMF commander said Saturday.
"This year we will continue test and combat-training launches of new types of warheads for the Topol-M and Bulava sea-launched missile complexes," Col. Gen. Nikolai Solovtsov said.
He said previously a second missile battalion, equipped with advanced Topol-M (SS-27) road-mobile ICBMs, will be put on combat duty before the end of the year and that the deployment of silo-based Topol-M systems in the Saratov Region and road-mobile systems in the Ivanovo Region (central Russia) would be completed in 2010.
As of December 2006, the Strategic Missile Forces operated 44 silo-based and three mobile missile systems.
The commander said the Topol-M system will be equipped with multiple independently targetable re-entry vehicles (MIRV) in the next two or three years, adding that the new system would help penetrate missile defenses more effectively.
Did someone say FAMILY VALUES? What a joke they all are!
GOP Senator Pleaded Guilty After Restroom Arrest
Idaho's Craig Denies 'Inappropriate Conduct,' Says He Regrets Entering Plea
By Paul Kane and Shailagh Murray
washingtonpost.com Staff Writer and Washington Post Staff Writer
Tuesday, August 28, 2007; A01Sen. Larry E. Craig pleaded guilty earlier this month to misdemeanor disorderly-conduct charges stemming from his June arrest by an undercover police officer in a men's restroom at Minneapolis-St. Paul International Airport, a court spokeswoman and the senator's office said yesterday.
Craig issued a statement confirming his arrest and guilty plea, which were reported in the Capitol Hill newspaper Roll Call. But the Idaho Republican maintained that he had not engaged in any "inappropriate conduct" and that the airport police misunderstood his behavior.
"At the time of this incident, I complained to the police that they were misconstruing my actions. I was not involved in any inappropriate conduct," Craig said. "I should have had the advice of counsel in resolving this matter. In hindsight, I should not have pled guilty. I was trying to handle this matter myself quickly and expeditiously."
Now in his third term, Craig, 62, has been a member of the Senate Republican leadership and ran unsuccessfully in 2002 to become the GOP whip, the No. 2 leadership job. He has been a prominent figure on gun rights and Western land issues, and he resigned yesterday as Idaho chairman of the presidential campaign of former Massachusetts governor Mitt Romney (R).
Craig "did not want to be a distraction," said Romney spokesman Matt Rhoades, "and we accept his decision."
Roll Call, citing a copy of a report by airport police, said officers had been conducting a sting operation inside the men's room because of complaints of sexual activity there. The police report gives this account of the arrest:
In a galactically stupid, venal and venomous editorial this morning, the NY Times said this:
The problem is not Mr. Maliki’s narrow-mindedness or incompetence. He is the logical product of the system the United States created, one that deliberately empowered the long-persecuted Shiite majority and deliberately marginalized the long-dominant Sunni Arab minority.
If the NY Times can imagine a way that a minority in the United States comprising about 20-25% of the population could outvote the majority and call it just, proper and wise, I'd like to hear it.
But because the vote was granted in Iraq by the force of arms of the USA, and under a republican, no matter that their post victory tactical policies were remarkably stupid, the Times cannot HELP THEMSELVES but blame the FACT of a Shia majority in another nation on Bush.
We make not LIKE what Maliki is doing, but Maliki was chosen by others just as Chirac was chosen. That this fairly elected government in fact IS enabling Shia dominated sectarian violence may be our problem, but it is not our fault.
That nation must find IT'S way to nationhood or, like India and Pakistan do what must be done, but in the end, that MUST be up to them.
The Times then warps history ...
The real lesson of Vietnam for Iraq is clear enough. America lost that war because a succession of changes in South Vietnamese leadership, many of them inspired by Washington, never produced an effective government in Saigon. None of those changes, beginning with the American-sponsored coup that led to the murder of South Vietnamese President Ngo Dinh Diem in 1963, changed the underlying reality of a South Vietnamese government and army that never won the loyalty and support of large sections of the Vietnamese population.
The short-term sequels of American withdrawal from Indochina were brutal, as the immediate sequels of America’s withdrawal from Iraq will surely be. But the American people rightly concluded that with no way to win a military victory, there could be no justification for allowing thousands more United States troops to die in Vietnam.
We'll never know that since Congress, with NO AMERICAN FIGHTING IN VIETNAM cut off all aid to South Vietnam, AFTER AMERICAN COMBAT FORCES WENT HOME.
ALL AID.
The NY Times well understands the REAL ISSUE.
A repeat of the scene at 22 Gia Long Street in April 1975, will mean a generation of Republican dominance AGAIN.
Fatah Militant: U.S. Training Was Key to Intifada's Success
By AARON KLEIN
Special to the Sun
August 21, 2007 posted 12:36 pm EDTRAMALLAH -- American-run programs that train Fatah militias were instrumental in the "success" of the Palestinian intifada that began in 2000, a senior Fatah militant told The New York Sun.
"I do not think that the operations of the Palestinian resistance would have been so successful and would have killed more than one thousand Israelis since 2000 and defeated the Israelis in Gaza without these [American] trainings," a senior officer of President Abbas's Force 17 Presidential Guard unit, Abu Yousuf, said.America has longstanding training programs at a base in the West Bank city of Jericho for members of Force 17, which serves as de facto police units in the West Bank, and for another major Fatah security force, the Preventative Security Services
Someone remind me, why are we training FATAH?
"Harmless to our enemies and treacherous to our friends" - Bernard Lewis
Whatever you say, moron. DO IT. PLEEEEEEEEZE !
DAMASCUS, Syria (AP) - Iraq's prime minister lashed out at American criticism, saying Wednesday that no one has a right to put timetables on his elected government.
Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki blamed the U.S. presidential campaign for the recent tough words from the Bush administration and from other American politicians.
"No one has the right to place timetables on the Iraq government. It was elected by its people," he said at a news conference in Damascus at the end of a three-day visit to Syria.
"Those who make such statements are bothered by our visit to Syria. We will pay no attention. We care for our people and our constitution and can find friends elsewhere," al-Maliki said.
U.S. Sen. Carl Levin, a Michigan Democrat, said Monday that al-Maliki should be ousted and replaced with a less sectarian leader.
In addition, both President Bush and U.S. Ambassador to Iraq Ryan Crocker on Tuesday voiced frustration and disappointment with the al-Maliki government.
The harsh exchange erupted just a few weeks before Crocker and the U.S. commander in Iraq, Gen. David Petraeus, are to report to Congress on the success of the latest military campaign to reduce violence in Iraq, and the Iraqi government's progress in achieving political reconciliation.
Without naming any American official, al-Maliki said some of the criticism of him and his government was "discourteous."
Hey moron, this IS democracy. We slam Chirac, Villepin, Schreoder, Anan, anyone we damn please, and if you really don't like the system, STAY IN DAMASCUS.
Discourteous? effin-ay right, and it's meant to be.
Presidential aides hinted yesterday that Russia could shortly resume the production of Tu-160 and Tu-95 strategic nuclear bombers, now that the aircraft are again flying "combat missions".
The TU-95, which at the end of the Cold war was used for long range patrolling, MAYBE electronic surveillance and intelligence, can have but one path to success as a strategic bomber... if the USA is already without any kind of protection aloft, and they can fly around like bunch of SPAD's. The TU-95 flew in 1954. It has fantastic range, but WTF?
Maybe we should be happy they are prepared to waste resources on this.
They can carry a stand off missile, but they are not exactly stelthy enough to get within range, EVEN OF CARRIER TASK FORCES (8 contra rotating propellors), having been designed about 1951 before anyone even THOUGHT about that in operational aircraft as a function in design.
This must be a step taken as a symbol. But a symbol of what? Are they trying to provoke the USA in to a resource draining war? Are they so CONFIDENT they have taken our measure in their seminal economic oil-gas resource 'war' with europe, and our own resource weaknesses long term as a POEPLE to begin this?
The Islamists, Russia, China, morons like Chavez....against a somewhat declining, sometime seeminlgy spiritless europe, an isolated Israel attacked over and over demographically, culturally, and religously, poltically amongst its 'allies', and ACTUALLY, and a nearly solitary USA, successfuly portrayed as nearly a rogue cowboy as a result of others attacking it.
So WHERE IS MY HYDROGEN CAR?
What is the plan? Must we defend those who are strategically NOT WITH US except somewhat for the immediate family because they own a gas station?
NYT:“The Israel Lobby and U.S. Foreign Policy” is not even in bookstores, but already anxieties have surfaced about the backlash it is stirring, with several institutions backing away from holding events with the authors.

Now, I have not yet read the book, but I have read their Harvard/Kennedy School of Govt report, in a detailed fashion several times. The book is based on these ideas, what they claim to be facts, and conclusion.
I will make my OBSERVATIONS again.
The Israel Lobby is the Protocols of Zion, Diet Version.
The very kernel of their 'thesis' is a conclusion they make based on these items:
- AIPAC (American Israel Poltical Affairs Committee), which is a de facto agent for a foreign government, has a stranglehold on the U.S. Congress. (page 19)
- That power derives in part from the influence Jewish voters have on presidential elections. Despite their small numbers in the population (less than 3 percent), they make large campaign donations to candidates from both parties. The Washington Post once estimated that Democratic presidential candidates “depend on Jewish supporters to supply as much as 60 percent of the money.”76 (page 19)
- On the media… they just take a section in order to assert jews are successful ….Manipulating the Media (page 21)
Conclusion?
Jews are powerful, rich, and manipulate the media, and btw, do it all against the interests of the USA and for the interest of Israel.
Just substitute the idea of the USA for the world, and we have the Protocols of Zion.
This is the basic, unvarnished, deconstructed assertion of this paper.
U.S. still selling banner F-14 parts sought by Iran
GERTZ : WASHINGTON — The Defense Department sold 1,400 F-14 spare parts in 2007 despite a ban on such transactions, according to a GAO report. The Pentagon sold the parts in February in wake of its announcement of a suspension of any transfer of F-14 components.
"One country with operational F-14s, Iran, is known to be seeking these parts," Greg Kutz, managing director of special investigations for the Government Accountability Office, said. "If such parts were publicly available, it could jeopardize national security."
On Aug. 1, GAO released a report that disclosed continuing Pentagon sales of F-14 components. The Pentagon decision in January 2007 to block F-14 spare parts sales took place amid intelligence information that Iran was seeking to overhaul its F-14 fleet. The Iranian fleet was procured from the United States more than 30 years ago.
The report cited the Defense Reutilization and Marketing Service, the Pentagon's surplus sales division, as responsible for the sale of F-14 spare parts. DRMS was said to have failed to update an automated control list and remove F-14 aircraft parts listed on the agency's Internet sales site.
The disclosure of the F-14 spare parts sale has alarmed members of Congress. Sen. Ron Wyden, an Oregon Democrat, has won House approval for legislation that would suspend sales of all F-14 parts. The bill has been pending in the Senate.
I only hope we charged as much as THESE GUYS
I keep saying it, I will keep on saying it, dedicated religious racist murderers with heartfelt social programs and education, and a firm beleif they are doing god's work, will utterly defeat mafioso racist murderers who would rather operate a spoils system and shop in Paris EVERY SINGLE TIME, and the mafioso should receive NO SUPPORT. The idea that they can be 'negotiatied with' besides being a delusion should pale beside the fairly OBVIOUS outcome of a protracted battle between the two.
GERTZ : Hamas winning the intelligence war with Fatah in the West Bank
TEL AVIV — Hamas has been fighting a silent war with the ruling Fatah movement in the West Bank.
Israeli intelligence sources said Hamas has formed an underground force that was assaulting Fatah officials and their installations in the West Bank. The sources said Hamas has been targeting the homes and offices of Fatah politicians and commanders.
"Hamas has been on the offensive and Fatah is on the defensive," a senior intelligence source said. "Fatah is showing the same signs of fatigue that we saw in early 2007 in the Gaza Strip."
![]()
Let me posit a reason(s) - besides knowing in their heart FATAH is simply a corruptocracy with roots in the 19th and early 20th century's stupidities, some of the footsoldiers of FATAH have great sympathy for the religious fervor and real feeling of HAMAS's genocidal killers, who actually are sincere in the desire to see Islam supreme as both the means and the end, and will acutally KILL the jews if they can, something near and dear to all their hearts.
The sources said the Hamas campaign has continued despite the arrest of some 300 Hamas operatives by forces loyal to Palestinian Authority Chairman Mahmoud Abbas. The detained Hamas operatives were deemed low-level who enabled Hamas commanders to go underground.
I don't think I stand second to anyone in demanding that a set of secure borders exist.
But you just have to watch out WHO is in the parade along with you.... now the SPLC is one of the oldest and best anti-segregation, anti racism orgs in the USA, and played a key role in KILLING aryan nation. They have regarded the border battle as one of racism and I have criticized them for this, both here and to them directly (I have contributed there, and WILL)
However....PAY ATTENTION MINUTEMEN ..
San Diego Minutemen Linked to White Supremacists
San Diego’s KPBS-FM, a National Public Radio affiliate, aired a story Aug. 2 detailing the links between the white supremacist activities of two high-profile supporters of the San Diego Minutemen, a nativist extremist group whose bellicose tactics and internal feuding are detailed in the current issue of the Intelligence Report.
The KPBS story revealed that San Diego Minutemen activist Ray Carney worked for 11 years as a computer expert for White Aryan Resistance, a neo-Nazi hate group lead by Tom Metzger. The story also
quotes Intelligence Project Director Mark Potok describing the white supremacist tattoos and symbols featured on a MySpace page belonging to Steven Shine, another frequent participant in San Diego Minutemen protests.
Our favorite moment in the KPBS story has Shine being interviewed by the station’s reporter “while restraining a pit-bull at a north county canyon where local Minutemen rallied to evict migrants from outdoor camps.”
Shine took down his MySpace page shortly after the Intelligence Report story came out. But we captured it for our archives before it vanished.
NO ONE SHOULD BE ALLOWED TO MASQUERADE RACISM AS A CALL FOR BORDER SECURITY
WAKE UP MINUTEMEN AND SCOURGE THESE PR**KS.
OSTRACIZE THEM AND DRIVE THEM OUT
PITILESSLY
OR FACE THE QUESTIONS WHICH RESULT FROM FAILURE TO DO SO
It's nice when the venal, self centered, solipsoid, wrong headed turn out to be SO TRULY STUPID they end up congratulating racists. Trent Lott's people should be ALL OVER THIS ONE.
CARACAS, Venezuela - Sean Penn applauded President Hugo Chavez as the Venezuelan leader lambasted the Bush administration and demanded an end to war in Iraq.
CARACAS, Venezuela -- The Simon Wiesenthal Center, a U.S. Jewish rights group, has accused Venezuela's President Hugo Chavez of making "anti-Semitic declarations" in a televised Christmas Eve speech.
According to a transcript, Chavez said "the world has enough for all, but it turned out that some minorities, descendants of those who crucified Christ, descendants of those who threw Bolivar out of here and also crucified him in their own way in Santa Marta, there in Colombia, a minority took the world's riches for themselves."
Chavez met privately with the 46-year-old actor for two hours Thursday, praising him as being "brave" for urging Americans to impeach President Bush.
"In the name of the peoples of the world, President Bush, withdraw the troops from Iraq. Enough already with so much genocide," Chavez said before an auditorium packed with his red-clad supporters.
The Chavez Regime: Fostering Anti-Semitism and Supporting Radical Islam Introduction
This report details a number of troubling trends observable in the government of Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez. Chavez and his government-affiliated institutions have elevated their anti-Zionist and anti-Semitic rhetoric – under the guise of anti-imperialism and anti-Americanism – to dangerous new levels.
At the same time, a proliferation of anti-Jewish statements and actions by government officials, university faculty and government-sponsored media outlets has created a spillover effect into mainstream society in Venezuela, where anti-Israel rallies, anti-Semitic vandalism and vicious anti-Jewish caricatures have become all-too commonplace.
This is taking place as Chavez has taken an aggressively hostile foreign policy stance against America and the West and, by extension, the State of Israel.
Schumer to fight ALL/ANY new Bush high court
picks
New York Sen. Charles E. Schumer, a powerful member of the Democratic leadership, said Friday the Senate should not confirm another U.S. Supreme Court nominee under President Bush “except in extraordinary circumstances.”
“We should reverse the presumption of confirmation,” Schumer told the American Constitution Society convention in Washington. “The Supreme Court is dangerously out of balance. We cannot afford to see Justice Stevens replaced by another Roberts, or Justice Ginsburg by another Alito.”
Now, though I favored many of decisions made by the courts of the late 40's to the late 60's, I wonder what Chucky would have said if Everett Dirksen had said all that about the decisions of Earl Warren, William O Douglas, Robert Jackson, Thurgood Marshall, and Arthur Goldberg and others ... who served at the appointments of liberal (now neocon) presidents of the USA chosen by the people of the USA over LENGTHY periods of time.
By stating that the court is dangerously our of balance, Schumer has stated the US people are dangerously unbalanced, and that we have been in electing those men whose chose those justices over a VERY long time.
Do any of these people realize how they sound?
After a heart attack, it's a risk every time I read the man's words. Responsible editors need to recognize this threat to me and eliminate his words permanently as a risk to a small, endangered minority, in a rural area.
From (MODERATE?) MUSLIMS SPEAK OUT :
One of the most important things for all people to remember in these difficult times is that there are more compatibilities than differences among the major religions – at least concerning treatment of one another as individuals.
Gulp, sure all the jews and christians and hindus and buddhists claim their treatment of others are the result of the revealed, perfect immutable words of God.
In some Islamic societies, women are relegated by official religious laws to subservient positions in society where they must remain veiled, cannot operate an automobile or compete with men for a job, and often receive inferior if any education. In other more secular nations of the same faith, all of these restrictions are absent.
You mean like Pakistan where the MMA now wins every election by landslides on a RELIGIOUS basis?
Within predominantly Christian societies, civil laws usually provide for equal treatment of women, while religious organizations are often the primary source of discrimination, which provides a justification for similar inequities within the secular world.
Surprise ! While I am no admirer of James Dobson (to say the least) I have to admit that it's news to me that christian wives are relegated to "similar inequities" to license-less, chador and burqqa clad ladies not allowed out without suitable male guardianship from the consciousless walking penises crowding the streets.
Why does this stupid, naive, dangerous, and foolish man vex me so ... I feel like Ahab, charging the 1st mate to go on ..'BECAuSE HE TASKS ME STARRBUCK, HE TASKS ME....'
Jimmy Carter has NO PLACE at this table.
Build HOMES, Jimmy, You are meant for that fulfillment and are supreme at it. We NEED you to help people in that way. BUILD HOMES!
It's true I never actually blog about Clinton, but Curmudgeonly makes it too, too easy.
Esperanza Brooks bragged about her discreet girls and high-end clientele.
But the cheerleading coach turned moonlighting madame name-dropped to the wrong people and landed in jail last week.
Las Vegas police arrested Brooks, 36, and four associates last week after a two-week investigation into the local prostitution ring. The investigation started when a tipster told detectives about a cheerleading coach at Andre Agassi College Preparatory Academy who might be running a prostitution service.
When an undercover detective called Brooks, she said her girls were clean and only serviced upscale clients, a police report said. She later boasted that she had more than 40 women working for her and that her clients ranged from basketball star Shaquille O'Neal to a former president, according to the report.
"These are not your average girls. Some of them have worked with Bill Clinton," Brooks told an undercover officer, according to the report.
Police don't have any information to prove or disprove Brooks' clientele claims, Officer Jose Montoya said.
President Bush’s top counterterrorism advisers acknowledged today that the strategy for fighting Osama bin Laden’s Al Qaeda leadership in Pakistan had failed
You mean the strategy of creating the Islamic Emirate of Waziristan, and then having Pakistan forbid american arms and men from entering, while releasing all the terrorists held in Pakistan from those and FATA areas, in order to think we were making them happy so they wouldn't be so mean? You mean that strategy? You mean the one where we give them a mini-Afghanistan?
How could thinking, learned, experienced people be convinced that such outright appeasement in the face of Quranic compulsion, prejudice, and outright anti americanism EVER succeed?
Well?
1) They are not learned, and like Lyndon Johnson and Ho Chi Minh, mistake their adversaries as people who can be sent 'messages. I don't think so sport
2) They have swallowed UNQUESTIONING the idea of Religion of Peace. Now there may be a great deal of argument over that, but our govt seems to have ruled out a religiously based war, with imams teaching that god wants certain outcomes inimical to sunday barbecues and football.
3) They can't deal with the policies which would be compulsory if this turns out to be a religiously based world war of varying intensities in different places and times, and sometimes requiring us to use real weapons, and real armies for the outright express purpose of slaughtering the enemy ( as opposed to liberation and nation building), in what would have to be a war of the peoples.
In other words, the leaders are incompetent, and the principles the other side would use (the democrats) are WORSE (hey it's a bumper sticker, and a police matter---BTDT).
NYT - President Bush’s top counterterrorism advisers acknowledged today that the strategy for fighting Osama bin Laden’s Al Qaeda leadership in Pakistan had failed, as the White House released a grim new intelligence assessment that has forced the administration to consider more aggressive measures inside Pakistan.
The intelligence report, the most formal assessment since the Sept. 11, 2001 attacks about the terrorist threat facing the United States, concludes that the United States is losing ground on a number of fronts in the fight against Al Qaeda, and describes the terrorist organization as having significantly strengthened over the past two years.
In identifying the main reasons for Al Qaeda’s resurgence, intelligence officials and White House aides pointed the finger squarely at a hands-off approach toward the tribal areas by Pakistan’s president, Gen. Pervez Musharraf, who last year brokered a cease-fire with tribal leaders in an attempt to drain support for Islamic extremism in the region.
“It hasn’t worked for Pakistan,” said Frances Fragos Townsend, who heads the Homeland Security Council at the White House. “It hasn’t worked for the United States.”
Yesterday both Newsweek and the Boston Globe managed to get it ALL wrong.
ALL
The Globe published an editorial of fear. Not prudence, fear. In Al Qaeda Without Illusion the Globe centers on Waziristan, and then in fear recommends no action lest we piss them off and they go and do something which might make us even more nervous.
Were US troops to pursue bin Laden inside Pakistan, they could set off a chain of events that transforms Pakistan -- a nuclear power -- into an Al Qaeda state. Islamist extremism is primarily a challenge to the moderate mainstream of the Muslim world. America must protect itself against Islamist terrorism, but it should avoid falling into the traps that bin Laden and his gang set for it in Muslim countries. Musharraf has a potent army and a highly developed instinct for self-preservation. The United States should not be making it harder than it already is for him to cope with Pakistan's terrorist threat
Here's how it works, morons. Their religious teachings guarantee their victory. Therefore if we do nothing we embolden them, and if we do something it enrages them. Therefore we have to ensure we KILL THEM or one or the other will ensue, and EITHER ONE is bad for us. This is not about choosing hte least worst course. They are not the bad union press people against whom there will be many many go rounds in a shared future vision of some commonality. When the Globe's editor's encompass this unavoidable reality, they might be able to write a common sense editorial about it.
And then there is Newsweek, the Newsweek which praised Yusuaf Al Qaradawi as a moderate .
I have watched this all before. 1972-1975.
This denouement, and it's inevitable outcome is as certain as that of the creation and treaty with the Islamic Emirate of Waziristan by Pakistan last year.
The democrats then also lead the excuse laden, blind to results and consequences, 'we'll all feel better', bring our boys home, Breugel filled parade.
At that time a marginal war waged by a man who thought Ho Chi Minh was a George Meany on the side of a people too few of whom cared enouh about freedom or communism, or freedom to worship (most of those who cared over there were catholic) was lost strategically as a direct cost of battles won, a news anchor's personal agita and all about me-ism, and historical stupidity about the nature of war (Sherman's dictum - 'All attempts to make war easy and safe will end in disaster and humiliation'). However, we were saved by the nature of the enemy who had no care about us in ANY WAY that did not involve us being there, and the inner titanic power of the american desire to do well in all phases of life in freedom, which powers our economy and political system. But it took from 1975 to 1991 to do it, during which time Star Wars and the McDonalds strategy also, BTW, killed the USSR, rendering 1991 into a tactical CAKEWALK. As we all know, the strategic job was left unfinished.
But what is identical is the growing emotional hysteria to get out of Dodge, as if the place and thinking about it filled our homes and dreams with swarms of spiders. Weakest in this parade are the SAME PEOPLE. Only the faces have changed. And even though there is a civil war going on in ONE campaign area of this global war, it does not change that effort, only complicates it. But not for the Breugelites who will claim any ground which will hurt the domestic opposition.
U.S. approves contacts with Muslim Brotherhood: 'Region is going Islam'
WASHINGTON World Tribune — The Bush administration has been quietly engaging the Muslim Brotherhood movement.Officials said the State Department has approved a policy that would enable U.S. diplomats to meet and coordinate with Brotherhood leaders in Egypt, Iraq, Syria and other Arab states. They said the program would first be restricted to elected officials from the Brotherhood and eventually be extended to their political chiefs.
"The region is going Islam," an official said. "We see this in nearly every country in the Middle East. We either understand it and engage with it or find ourselves completely out of the picture."
MORONS, we live in Dar al Harb, and according to the MB, we make up laws out of our own heads instead of following god's ..WE ARE OUT OF THE PICTURE. We are the ESSENCE of what they want to rid the world of. The rest is salad dressing. Why is this difficult to comprehend?
The Brotherhood has been regarded as the inspiration for Muslim movements throughout the Arab world. The organization, founded in Egypt, spread through Saudi financing and has served as the inspiration for Al Qaida. Many Arab countries have banned the Brotherhood. But in Egypt, a party composed of Brotherhood members has won 20 percent of the seats in the National Assembly and plays a major role in domestic policy.
In 2007, officials said, the State Department was quietly fostering ties with the Brotherhood. U.S. embassy staffers in Cairo have attended sessions led by parliamentarians from the Brotherhood and invited the Islamists to official receptions.
Global poll shows wide distrust of United States
Wednesday, June 27, 2007, IHT
PARIS: Distrust of the United States has intensified across the world, but overall views of America remain very or somewhat favorable among majorities in 25 of 47 countries surveyed in a major international opinion poll, the Pew Research Center reported Wednesday.
"Anti-Americanism since 2002 has deepened, but it hasn't really widened," said Andrew Kohut, director of the Pew Global Attitudes Project. "It has worsened among America's European allies and is very, very bad in the Muslim world. But there is still a favorable view of the United States in many African countries, as well as in 'New Europe' and the Far East."
Nonetheless, majorities in many countries reject the main planks of current U.S. foreign policy and express distaste for American-style democracy, the survey found.
Respondents worldwide not only want Washington to pull U.S. troops out of Iraq "as soon as possible," but also seek a rapid end to the American and NATO military intervention in Afghanistan, now in its sixth year.
We are beset by FOOLS AND MORONS, and media which publicizes TRASH. This is an Ellsworth Toohey prize winner !
"Most of the citizens in the global survey agree the environment is in trouble and most blame the United States and, to a much more limited degree, China," Pew said.
Unfortunately, science does not grant to the perception of the masses the mantle of scientific fact, YET. But this whole thing gets better...
Chavez Warns of Resistance War With U.S.
CARACAS, Venezuela (AP) - President Hugo Chavez urged soldiers on Sunday to prepare for a guerrilla-style war against the United States, saying that Washington is using psychological and economic warfare as part of an unconventional campaign aimed at derailing his government.
Dressed in olive green fatigues and a red beret, Chavez spoke inside Tiuna Fort—Venezuela's military nerve-center—before hundreds of uniformed soldiers standing alongside armored vehicles and tanks decorated with banners reading: "Fatherland, Socialism, or Death! We will triumph!"
"We must continue developing the resistance war, that's the anti- imperialist weapon. We must think and prepare for the resistance war everyday," said Chavez, who has repeatedly warned that American soldiers could invade Venezuela to seize control of the South American nation's immense oil reserves.
U.S. officials reject claims that Washington is considering a military attack. But the U.S. government has expressed concern over what it perceives as a significant arms build-up here.

UN forces in Lebanon under orders not to offend Hizbullah
(God forbid!)TEL AVIV — United Nations forces have sharply reduced operations in southern Lebanon, enabling Hizbullah to restore its military presence following last year's war with Israel. Israeli military sources said the UN Interim Force in Lebanon has curtailed patrols and other operations near the Israeli border. They said UNIFIL patrols have been ordered to avoid population centers and refrain from any act that could anger Lebanese supporters of Hizbullah. Israel has appealed to UNIFIL to expand operations in southern Lebanon, Middle East Newsline reported. But the sources said European Union contingents, including Italy and France, have refused to take any action that could anger Hizbullah.
Don't the UN morons realize that failure to enforce the terms of the cease fire guarantees war?
Why then do they not enforce it?
Cowardice?
Sentiment for the arabs?
Ancient dislike 'pour les juifs'?
All of the above?
"The European contingents of UNIFIL are deathly scared of a backlash that would put their troops in danger," a military source said. "We are quickly returning to the 'See no evil, hear no evil approach' that existed before 2006."
That's actually a kind characterization from an Israeli source.
The UN is not useless, they are merely a useful shield for evil to hide behind, while good refrains from action which might tarnish it in the mind of others who actually don't care at best, and wish evil comes to good at worst.
The forces of Hizballah are the forces of racism, and genocide. The UN is simply an impediment.

The case of the disappearing Great Lake
By Dennis Cauchon, USA TODAY BARAGA, Mich. — "Where did the water go?" asks Ted Shalifor, manager of a marina and campground on Lake Superior's Chippewa Indian Reservation. The water on Lake Superior is so low that he couldn't put his docks in the water this year. Where he used to see water, he now sees sandbars. Lake Superior, the world's largest freshwater lake, has dropped to its lowest level in 81 years. The water is 20 inches below average and a foot lower than just a year ago. The dropping levels have had serious environmental and economic consequences. Wetlands have dried up. Power plants run at half capacity. Cargo ships carry partial loads. Boaters struggle to find a place to dock. The changes can be seen all along the 2,800-mile shore of Lake Superior, the coldest and deepest of the Great Lakes. The water has receded, sometimes 50 feet or more, from its normal shoreline. Lake Huron and Lake Michigan are at low levels, as well, although not quite as extreme. Researchers at the University of Minnesota and elsewhere study whether Lake Superior's low water levels are a result of global warming. The average water temperature of Lake Superior has risen 4.5 degrees Fahrenheit since 1979. A drought and warm weather are the immediate cause of the drop in water levels.
Climate change behind Darfur killing: UN's Sec. Gen. Ban Ki Moon
UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon said that the slaughter in Darfur was triggered by global climate change (Quran) and that more such conflicts may be on the horizon(Quran) , in an article published Saturday."The Darfur conflict began as an ecological crisis(Quran), arising at least in part from climate change(Quran)," Ban said in a Washington Post opinion column.
UN statistics showed that rainfall declined some 40 percent over the past two decades, he said, as a rise in Indian Ocean temperatures disrupted monsoons(Quran).
"This suggests that the drying of sub-Saharan Africa derives, to some degree, from man-made global warming," the South Korean diplomat wrote(Quran)
"It is no accident that the violence in Darfur erupted during the drought,(Quran)" Ban said in the Washington daily.
Malaysia rejects Muslim convert's bid to be recognized as Christian
PUTRAJAYA, Malaysia: Malaysia's top civil court rejected a Muslim woman's appeal to be recognized as a Christian on Wednesday, in a landmark case that tested the limits of religious freedom in the moderate Islamic country.
A three-judge Federal Court panel ruled by a 2-1 majority that only the Islamic Shariah Court has the power to allow Lina Joy, who converted to Christianity in 1998, to remove the word "Islam" from the religion category on her government identity card.
"This appeal is rejected," Chief Justice Ahmad Fairuz Sheikh Abdul Halim said. "Apostasy is a matter linked to Islamic laws. It's under the jurisdiction of the Shariah court ... Civil courts cannot interfere."
"She cannot simply at her own whims enter or leave her religion," Judge Ahmad Fairuz said. "She must follow rules."
Can you imagine?
These are 'allies' (?) in the war on terror? This is legalized religious oppression. Pure and simple.
The ruling is likely to drive another wedge in the Malaysian society which has become increasingly polarized in recent years with Buddhist, Christian and Hindu minorities complaining that their religious rights are held hostage to Islam. Muslim groups that say Islam is under threat because of people like Joy hailed the verdict.

Maybe it would have been a good idea to NOT rocket towns INSIDE Israel?
We all know the story..a bunch of rich daddy's boys at a 'white' southern school, in a varsity sport get likkered up and revert to the yahoos and red neck lynching wannabee's they really are, and after hiring a collud gal to cavort and strip, rape her like the rented property they 'really' think she is in the bathroom.
Except it's a figment, chimera, canard, dream, fantasy . Yet it's widespread instant acceptance emotionally attached to 88 Duke professor morons with no more sense than the professional Ratherite LYNCH MOB they are, and it's spread by a news industry whose PC factless bias proves it's unobjective reality proves that this REAL story's iron hard facts MUST be ignored.
Channon Christian, 21, and Christopher Newsom, 23, were out on a dinner date in Knoxville, Tenn., on January 6, when they were carjacked, kidnapped, raped, tortured, sexually mutilated, and killed.
Despite the press's taste for dramatic crimes, even crimes that do not involve missing blondes in Aruba, the story got almost no publicity. Conservative bloggers, who are beginning to buzz about the case, think they know why: the couple was white and the five suspects arrested in the case are black.
The mainstream press does not like to carry stories of black mayhem and white victims. First, there is the fear of stirring up more racism among Klansmen and neo-Nazis, as the Knoxville case has started to do. More importantly, the newsroom culture tends to view black-on-white crimes as responses to black oppression, and therefore not worth reporting. Whereas similar white-on-black crime is oppression itself, and thus crucially important to put before readers and viewers.
Truth is not oppresive racism. The press has an obligation to report what IS, not avoid what they are afraid will happen if they report what IS
Wolfowitz to Resign From World Bank
WASHINGTON (AP) - World Bank President Paul Wolfowitz will resign at the end of June, he and the bank said late Thursday, ending his long fight to survive pressure for his ouster over the generous compensation he arranged for his girlfriend. His departure ends a two-year run at the development bank that was marked by controversy from the start, given his previous role as a major architect of the Iraq war when he served as the No. 2 official at the Pentagon.
"He assured us that he acted ethically and in good faith in what he believed were the best interests of the institution and we accept that," the board said in its announcement of Wolfowitz's resignation.
Wolfowitz was all but forced out, however, by the finding of a special bank panel that he violated conflict-of-interest rules in his handling of the 2005 pay package of bank employee Shaha Riza.
The controversy, which gripped the bank for a month, was seen as a growing liability that threatened to tarnish the poverty-fighting institution's reputation and hobble its ability to persuade countries around the world to contribute billions of dollars to provide financial assistance to poor nations.
By tradition, the World Bank has been run by an American. The Bush administration keenly wanted to keep that decades-old practice firmly intact as the board dealt with Wolfowitz's fate. The United States is the bank's largest shareholder and its biggest financial contributor.
The White House said it would have a new candidate to announce soon, allowing for an orderly transition.
South African engineers to stand trial for nuclear smuggling
Two South Africans have been linked to international trade in nuclear weapons technology to rogue states, .....
according to South Africa’s Star newspaper. The engineers were identified as Daniel Geiges and Gerard Wisser. They are being held South Africa and their lawyers are opposing open court proceedings. “By international and South African law, the state is obliged to keep certain things secret," senior counsel Wim Trengove told the Pretoria High Court May 2.
File under the ' capitalists will sell us the rope to hang them with'
"If not, certain technology can fall into rogue hands and lead to the development of illicit nuclear arms . . . and that poses a significant threat to the public." According to the report, the two men played a key role in securing and developing technology for an apartheid-era nuclear bomb for the government. According to the state, Wisser and Geiges were "suppliers of uranium-enrichment technology to the South African nuclear program and acquired extensive nuclear technology" during their period of employment at Krisch Engineering Co. Trial is scheduled in July. The men face charges of fraud, perjury and charges under the Non-Proliferation of Weapons of Mass Destruction Act and Nuclear Energy Act.
Both were linked to the Pakistani supplier network headed by A.Q. Khan.
Matthew Parris: Rotting empire vs. inept enemy
Why the Islamist threat is greatly exaggerated
WRITING in The Spectator three weeks ago, David Selbourne - the distinguished essayist, author and thinker - had sniffed the wind and concluded that it is all up for what he calls the US imperium. Islam has been Washington's undoing, he believes, and after six short decades as top dog of the world, America is already stumbling and set to lose its predominance.
It's a fascinating thesis. Selbourne is right about one thing. The American empire has passed its zenith. More disputable is his implicit suggestion that the US and the world are heading for some kind of nemesis. And he is mistaken, I reckon, to conclude that Islam will prove that nemesis. I think the question of how, when and by whom an imperium is toppled is often secondary. Cometh the hour, cometh the mutiny. Empires fall because they rot from within: they over-extend themselves, become greedy, and lose idealism, nimbleness and drive.Okay, Schaedenfreude by some guys who smell like a fruit, and still can't figure out how Kim Philby fooled the lot, a few years after the Oxford Union voted overwhelmingly to 'not fight for King and Country" But please take note that beginning before the time of the War Between the States British papers were writing that those who had lived to see the Delaration of Independence, would also live to see it's demise. Now they rub their hands with glee that they have found in their erudite opinion, we are rotten (as they are, were). FORGET IT, BOYCHICKS
Have we not noticed how incompetent are Islamic governments and organisations the world over?
Has it not occurred to us that if al-Qa'ida really were as wily and resourceful as we tell ourselves it is, and if its tentacles really did extend as wide and deep as some say, it would be on the advance - not battled into a stalemate by Western security and intelligence? Al-Qa'ida's failure to infiltrate or penetrate Western structures has been complete.
There is a reason for this. Islam, in its more fundamentalist form, doesn't work. Serious, committed Islamists are most unlikely to succeed within any structures but their own. Their own, meanwhile, are notoriously inefficient and corrupt. Only by lucky coincidence have much of the world's known petrocarbons been found beneath Islamic nations, giving them what temporary influence they wield.
Hey Matt, in case you hadn't noticed, there ARE no fundamentalist Islamic govts, YET, save one. Iran, and THEY are thumbing their Quranic nose at you, while contemplating their Geiger counters. And we simply don't KNOW to what degree we MAY be interpenetrated. It turned out it only took 19 penetrators to kill a lot of people, necessitating a world wide response. No doubt, an 'exaggerated' bother to some. Of course, this view persists among those too tired, bored, and filled with an ennui about it all, since in that view we are the crass, rotten, boorish overreacting killers.
But wait, it gets better
Democratic candidates don't even have the stomach to call "REDEPLOYMENT" what it is?
How can they expect the voters (unless they hold them in utmost contempt) to take them for anything more than typical, marketing deployed, frame the argument, sound bite characterized, fakirs of the left, willing only to follow what they think the voters want?
Whatever the american people want, a replay of 22 Gia Long St., or a string of Srebinica's is not it.
As Newsweek points out this week, they all want to be Harry Truman.
They all want to be Harry Truman. Hillary Clinton invokes his iconic sign (THE BUCK STOPS HERE) to call for better treatment of wounded veterans. Barack Obama reminds us that Truman was the first politician bold enough to call for universal health care. Rudy Giuliani notes that Truman was unpopular in his day, but if he hadn't stood up to the Soviets in the late 1940s, asks Giuliani, "Who knows how much longer the cold war would have gone on?"....Americans say they want to see courage from their politicians. As the historian Michael Beschloss illustrates in his new book, "Presidential Courage," the greatest presidents were willing to risk their political careers to do the right thing for the country. Being courageous is usually hard to fake; voters, even apathetic ones, have a way of spotting phonies. But it is difficult to tell whether a candidate will make the hard choices until he or she actually becomes president—by which time, it's too late.
Would that be the Harry Truman who dropped the nuke on Hiroshima and slept soundly?
The Harry Turman who unhesitatingly fired Macarthur?
The Harry Truman who went for a stalemated war in Korea and saw his popularity drop to 28% rather than 'change course'?
The Harry Truman who 'created' the cold war?
The Harry Truman who risked nuclear war over a Berlin cut off from the free world, and 'strategically indefensible'?
THE HARRY TRUMAN WHOSE 'CONSERVATISM' CAUSED THE DEPARTURE OF THE ENTIRE LEFT OF THE DEMOCRATIC PARTY?
They make our guys look diligent..
Iraqi legislature to go on 2 month vaca this summer?
OR... Iraq unites the USA
BAGHDAD- Iraqi lawmakers said Thursday they might consider shortening—or even canceling—their planned two-month summer break to continue working. But they insisted that pressure from Washington is not behind the possible holiday-on-hold.And besides, they say, the U.S. Congress is not thinking of calling off its own recess because of wartime debate.
If these gavones want to lead, then they had better be seen to lead. If these people want to keep a republic THEY had better be prepared to do WHAT IT TAKES.
NO american, NONE will support Iraq being death ground for american sacrifice and treasure if the Iraqis head for the beach, and they won't deserve it.
The US Congress' vote to push for the withdrawal of troops from Iraq was wrong and will bring comfort to Al-Qaeda insurgents, Australian Prime Minister John Howard said Friday.
One square of toilet paper
'Gulfstream' Laurie David and celebrity comedienne (singer?) Sheryl Crowe demonstrate why environmentalism has failed.
Singer Sheryl Crow and environmentalist Laurie David have been traveling across America on a two-week Stop Global Warming College Tour, which winds up today at George Washington University. Crow and David (co-producer of the documentary "An Inconvenient Truth" and wife of "Curb Your Enthusiasm's" Larry David) have been touting their cause and chronicling their travels in a rather idiosyncratic blog.
And appearing everywhere to claim (falsely) the debate on global warming is over. So is the debate on there being one singular war on jihadi freaks, worldwide, right gals?
This movement whose underpinning, that we should avoid adding heat to the atmosphere is a worthy goal under any set of circumstances (political, environmental, and philosophical) keep on demonstrating the idiocy of celebrity-dom.
As if Sean Penn, and Alec Baldwin and Rosie are not enough, we now get to be lectured by the wife of a real talent, and a voice, composer who have no more to offer us than what has already been stated in this sentence.
We are not going to succeed in this movement by trying to find one square of toilet paper in a dark cold bathroom. Too bad, so sad, gals.
Cheaply charged electric, or hydrogen fuel cell cars would be the largest component we can add to help this situation, and by the way, screw our enemies. ALL OF THEM.
So stop talking about toilet paper. You sound like crap.
Everyone who has ever used one square only, raise your hand, please?
That's what I thought.
I have mentioned the true stupidity of some of Robert Kuttner's public philosophizing before. But this is a mischaracterization.
People such as Mr. Kuttner are not stupid.
They simply believe the facts and history are marshmallows to be shaped to achieve the only ends they deem good.
In an earlier column Mr. Kuttner totally brutalized the facts represented in DK Goodwin's Team of Rivals. Today he turns his misrepresentation machine to the word conservative. In his misleading theory of evolutionary history he declares that conservatism has failed three times and points out the three 'conservatives' who have lead us to failure.
THREE TIMES in my political adulthood, we have seen the exhaustion of a conservative ideology and presidency. Under Presidents Nixon and Bush II, the ingredients were corruption, corporate excess, and overreach of presidential power. During the 12 years of Reagan and Bush I, the hallmark was the failure of conservative economics.
Richard Nixon, Bush I , Bush II ?? CONSERVATIVE?
Maybe I missed something, but the only conservative I remember is Ronald Reagan. He is unmentioned.
But Mr. Kuttner reveals just who he is in the next sentence:
And twice, the electorate ousted Republicans only to get centrist Democrats, who ran more competent administrations but did little to redress the structure of financial inequality in America.
That's roger on the code word alert for capital, property, greed, and the american way of life. Some people just don't get it. FDR was trying to save the nation in 1932, not turn it into a modified USSR. But who is it that Mr. Kuttner thinks can represent thecorrect, progressive value set?
John Edwards would seem the most likely to govern as a true economic progressive.
You know, Mr. I have the biggest house in the county, two armericas, breck girl
9/11 attack on USA because of Crusades - no one is innocent
This will come as shocking news to Sam Adams et al who needed another 640 years or so to be born when the Council Of Clermont resulted in Urban's response to the armed dawa, and Fatah of 4 centuries length.
Sheik Omar Bakri: Killing innocent people is forbidden in Islam. But who is innocent - that is another question.
Sheik Omar Bakri: They were magnificent, even though they were terrorists. The fact that they carried out a terrorist act does not prevent us from calling them "magnificent," because this is what religious scholars call "commendable terrorism."
Interviewer: You are saying that they waged Jihad.
Sheik Omar Bakri: That's because we have two kinds of terrorism - commendable terrorism and reprehensible terrorism. Reprehensible terrorism is an attack on women, children, the peaceful, and the innocent..The 9/11 operations were a response to great aggressive acts by America - its attacks on Afghanistan, on Iraq, on Sudan, not to mention the historic Crusades from long ago, and so on.
Of course on 9/11 no americans were in Afghanistan either. Or the Sudan, except for consular personnel.
He is someone also who attempted to escape from Lebanon by way of Fernch and British evacuation last summer, if I remember correctly.

Nearly 90% of Palestinian youth deny Israel's right to exist
A recent poll of Palestinians shows a direct correlation between the PA curriculum and Palestinian youth's opinions. PMW's newest report on Palestinian Authority schoolbooks warns that because of the PA curriculum, which repeatedly and utterly rejects Israel's right to exist, "The well-meaning (Palestinian) student is left with no logical justification or religious option to accept Israel as a neighbor ..."
At a Washington news conference to release the new report, Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton likewise concluded that these PA schoolbooks are "...deeply disturbing, particularly for the denial of Israel's existence..."
