At the Web site of The American Spectator, think-tanker Paul Chesser takes note of a report by John Stossel on Fox Business Network "about a small window company called Serious Materials" that has big pull in Washington:
The company claims to produce the most energy efficient
windows in the world, which other larger companies dispute--but that's
not the point. Watch the Stossel segment [at either link above] and
you'll see how Serious got some high profile endorsements from
President Obama and Vice President Biden, which is suspicious because
the company's vice president for policy is married to the overseer of
President Obama's weatherization program, Cathy Zoi. Amazingly, Serious
Materials was the only "green" window company to receive some recent
tax credits from the federal government.
Stossel reports that after the segment ran, a Serious Materials
flack "called to say that my story is 'full of lies.' But she wouldn't
say what those lies are."
Timothy Carney at the Washington Examiner reports on another eyebrow-raising apparent conflict of interest:
Mark Ernst, in December 2007, was chief executive officer
of H&R Block, the nation's largest tax-preparation company.
Thirteen months later, once President Obama took office, Ernst was
named a deputy commissioner at the Internal Revenue Service, where he
would spend his first year drafting new regulations for tax
preparers--regulations that H&R Block welcomes and market analysts
say will benefit the company.
With Ernst in mind, recall Barack Obama's campaign pledge:
"No political appointees in an Obama administration will be permitted
to work on regulations or contracts directly and substantially related
to their prior employer for two years."
Carney quotes an IRS spokesman's email saying the rules don't apply
to Ernst because he "is a civil servant at the IRS; he is not a
political appointee." As Carney notes, it's passing strange for an
ex-CEO to pursue a second career as a civil servant. He adds: "Now we
can see that the ethics rules, like much of Obama's good-government
talk, is more style than substance."
The Founding Brothers defined a cynic's system in which human weaknesses were used to hold govt powers in check by balancing opposing natural desires.
But it's still up to us to recognize the realities before us to pass along what we have
This last foolish election in which a hit song was elected president due to a hopeful tune and smart lyrics, hiding a theme of revolution with promises of a better way had better be a lesson to all.
"Obama could instruct Secretary of Defense Robert Gates to slow or
decrease these purchases, which would send an unmistakable signal that it
was no longer business-as-usual."
Stephen Walt
Position: Professor of international affairs at Harvard University's John F. Kennedy School of Government
WASHINGTON -- A leading ally of President Barack Obama and critic of the Israel lobby in the United States has outlined a
proposed U.S. campaign to pressure Israel that would suspend the
intelligence dialogue between the two countries.
The timing is good.
Israel's "special relationship" with the United States has been
low-hanging fruit for the unrelenting and politically victorious
critics of the Bush administration's War on Terror which targeted
militants in Iraq, Iran and Syria in coordination with Israel's
security agencies.
Stephen Walt, a U.S. professor of international affairs at Harvard
University's John F. Kennedy School of Government, who co-authored with
John Mearsheimer of the University of Chicago a controversial study on
the Israeli lobby in the United States, has drafted recommendations for
the Obama administration to pressure the new Israeli government of
Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu to accept a Palestinian state in the
West Bank.
Walt, regarded as influential in the U.S. diplomatic community, said the
campaign should begin by administration criticism of Israel and support for
United Nations resolutions that condemn the Jewish state.
"U.S. officials could even describe Israel's occupation [of the West
Bank] as 'contrary to democracy,' 'unwise,' 'cruel,' or 'unjust,'" Walt
wrote in the U.S. magazine Foreign Policy.
"Altering the rhetoric would send
a clear signal to the Israeli government and its citizens that their
government's opposition to a two-state solution was jeopardizing the special
relationship."
Netanyahu was scheduled to fly to Washington to meet Obama in May 2009.
But on April 16, the Israeli daily Yediot Aharonot reported that Netanyahu
was expected to cancel his visit amid an assessment that Obama would refuse
to meet the Israeli prime minister.
"Within four years there will be a permanent settlement between Israel
and Palestinians," White House Chief of Staff Rahm Emanuel was quoted by
Yediot as saying. "We don't care who the prime minister is."
Walt's report, titled "Can the United States Put Pressure on Israel: A
User's Guide." marked the latest recommendations to the Obama administration
to revise U.S. policy toward Israel.
In March 2009, a report by a bipartisan
panel of foreign policy analysts called on the White House to pressure
Israel as part of an effort to resolve the U.S. conflict with the Arab
world.
Stephen Walt, left, of Harvard University, and John Mearsheimer of the University of Chicago.
Greg Martin / N.Y. Times
The book by Walt and Mearshimer, The Israel Lobby and U.S. Foreign
Policy, generated controversy but also served to validate a growing
alternative foreign policy consensus for a new administration elected
in large part on the basis of the repudiation of the 43rd U.S.
president.
But the book was also repudiated by such ideologically opposed
former foreign policy officials as former Secretary of State (1982-89)
George Shultz and former N.Y. Times correspondent and former President
of the Council on Foreign Relations Leslie Gelb.
"Anyone who thinks that Jewish groups constitute a homogeneous
'lobby' ought to spend some time dealing with them," Shultz wrote in
the U.S. News and World Report. "For example, my decision to open a
dialogue with Yasser Arafat after he met certain conditions evoked a
wide spectrum of responses from the government of Israel, its political
parties, and American Jewish groups who weighed in on one side or the
other. ... The United States supports Israel not because of favoritism
based on political pressure or influence but because the American
people, and their leaders, say that supporting Israel is politically
sound and morally just. ... So, on every level, those who blame Israel
and its Jewish supporters for U.S. policies they do not support are
wrong. They are wrong because, to begin with, support for Israel is in
our best interests. They are also wrong because Israel and its
supporters have the right to try to influence U.S. policy. And they are
wrong because the U.S. government is responsible for the policies it
adopts, not any other state or any of the myriad lobbies and groups
that battle daily--sometimes with lies -- to win America's support."
Leslie Gelb wrote in the New York Times Book Review that the
scholarship was shoddy and that the authors were biased. "More
troublingly, [Walt and Mearsheimer] don't seriously review the facts of
the two most critical issues to Israel and the lobby -- arms sales to
Arab states and the question of a Palestinian state -- matters on which
the American position has consistently run counter to the so-called
all-powerful Jewish lobby. For several decades, administration after
administration has sold Saudi Arabia and other Arab states first-rate
modern weapons, against the all-out opposition of Israel and the lobby.
And make no mistake, these arms have represented genuine security risks
to Israel. . . And on the policy issue that has counted most to Israel
and the lobby -- preventing the United States from accepting a
Palestinian state prior to a negotiated deal between Israel and the
Palestinians -- it's fair to say Washington has quietly sided with the
Palestinians for a long time."
Walt warned against any immediate attempt by Obama to reduce the $3
billion in annual U.S. military aid to Israel. He said this would result in
a
battle with the Democratic-controlled Congress.
"There's a lot of potential leverage here, but it's probably not the
best stick to use, at least not at first," Walt said.
"Trying to trim or cut
the aid package will trigger an open and undoubtedly ugly confrontation in
Congress -- where the influence of AIPAC and other hard-line groups in the
Israel lobby is greatest. So that's not where I'd start."
But Walt urged Obama to reduce U.S. strategic cooperation with Israel.
He said the administration could suspend the dialogue between the Israeli
and U.S. intelligence communities as well as that of the Israeli military
and the
Defense Department.
"Today, such a step would surely get the attention of Israel's security
establishment," Walt said.
Yes and that's why they have shifted to internal weapons production and have completed an alarming agreement to sell drones to Russia last month. The principle and precendent should be an alarm bell. Do we want to give Israel the same freedom to conduct arms sales as Russia? China? Are WE prepared for the consequences? Imagine if Japan was pushed to such an extreme.
Earthquake
Walt also recommended that the United States reduce its procurement of
Israeli defense equipment, another step that would not require congressional
approval. Israel has sold a range of armor, munitions and platforms deployed
by the U.S. military in Afghanistan and Iraq.
"Obama could instruct Secretary of Defense Robert Gates to slow or
decrease these purchases, which would send an unmistakable signal that it
was no longer business-as-usual," Walt said.
"Given the battering Israel's
economy has taken in the current global recession, this step would get
noticed too. And most of these measures could be implemented by the
Executive Branch alone, thereby outflanking die-hard defenders of the
special relationship in Congress."
I wonder what Walt will say when the final result of this is that Israeli Phalcon AEW systems are guiding SU-30's from Russia or China toward intercepts of B-2 stealth bombers. Or when stealth drones made in Israel and flown by China, are flying near US fleets. Or when Chinese navy ships are guarded by advanced Arrow anti-missile missiles.
All for a few years of oil and appeasement of barbarians whose untrammeled religious consciences give them complete freedom to kill us?
What do we have in common with Jordan? Syria? KSA? Yemen? Egypt?
U.S. Taxpayers Risk $9.7 Trillion on Bailouts as Senate Votes
By Mark Pittman and Bob Ivry
Feb. 9 (Bloomberg) -- The stimulus package the U.S. Congress
is completing would raise the government's commitment to solving
the financial crisis to $9.7 trillion, enough to pay off more
than 90 percent of the nation's home mortgages.
The Federal Reserve, Treasury Department and Federal Deposit
Insurance Corporation have lent or spent almost $3 trillion over
the past two years and pledged to provide up to $5.7 trillion
more if needed. The total already tapped has decreased about 1
percent since November, mostly because foreign central banks are
using fewer dollars in currency-exchange agreements called swaps.
The Senate is to vote early this week on a stimulus package
totaling at least $780 billion that President Barack Obama says
is needed to avert a deeper recession. That measure would need to
be reconciled with an $819 billion plan the House approved last
month.
Only the stimulus package to be approved this week, the $700
billion Troubled Asset Relief Program passed four months ago and
$168 billion in tax cuts and rebates approved in 2008 have been
voted on by lawmakers. The remaining $8 trillion in commitments
are lending programs and guarantees, almost all under the
authority of the Fed and the FDIC. The recipients' names have not
been disclosed.
"We've seen money go out the back door of this government
unlike any time in the history of our country," Senator Byron
Dorgan, a North Dakota Democrat, said on the Senate floor Feb. 3.
"Nobody knows what went out of the Federal Reserve Board, to
whom and for what purpose. How much from the FDIC? How much from
TARP? When? Why?"
Have you ever had that gnawing feeling that something is really wrong, but you don;t know what it is?
North Korea watchers in Japan disclose satellite images of new missile base
North Korea experts in Japan recent disclosed satellite photographs of
a new North Korean long-range missile base where systems capable of
reaching the United States will be deployed.
Commercial satellite imagery of the base was broadcast on Japanese
television and Internet postings featured new details of the facility.
Commercial satellite photo [ZOOM]
released in Japan of a new missile base in Tongchang-ri, Cholsan
County, North Korea near the China border, deemed capable of firing a
Taepodong-2 or Taepodong-3 missiles, which could reach the United
States.
terra-update.blogspot.com
The base is located in Tongchang-ri, Cholsan County, North Pyongan
Province. The satellite images were provided by Digital Globe.
Osamu Eya, a frequent commentator on North Korea military-related
issues, identified two lines in one image as likely being a track to
move the launch pad.
Yet we continue along the merry path of a negotiated agreement with a power which has now twice (1994, and this year) unilaterally abrogated it's international agreements, in 1994 by simply CHEATING, and yet continues to develop both the weapons systems and weapons to deliver a nuclear payload on our people. How different would this world be if NoKo had been removed in favor of a nation which could be self determining before they shared their expertise with Pakistan, Iran, Libya and who knows how many others?
Sometimes there is just nothing to discuss, and no point in discussing geological and paleontological level differences...it just highlights the fact that nothing can be solved, and enhances the enmity.
Speaking on Fuji Television, Eya said the height of the launch pad is
about 30 meters, indicating it could accommodate a two or three-stage
missile. This means the facility would be capable of firing a
Taepodong-2 or Taepodong-3 missile, which could reach the United
States.
Kansai University Professor Yi Yong-Hwa also said in an Asahi
Television appearance that the missile site was built close to the
China-North Korea border to make it more difficult for the United
States to attack it.
A comparison of new images with those from 2006 showed that
construction had progressed and that the site could now be operational.
A Japanese blogger calling himself "Cosmos 21" posted a map and
provided details on other buildings at the base, including the site's
command and control center, missile assembly plant and secondary launch
pad.
More, WAY MORE, than three quarters of a trillion dollars and it may not even stop the bleeding ....or work at all...the people who style themselves the government have not yet figured out that the crisis of confidence is that THEY have lost credit with US. They have saile dover the edge, and it's clear from this crisis, which rather than showcasing the strengths of parties coming together in good will, instead exposed the weaknesses of corruption, partisanship, and failure to take responsibility.
Oct. 6 (Bloomberg) -- Federal Reserve Chairman Ben S.
Bernanke may find the next
fronts of the financial crisis to be
just as chilling as last month's downfall of Wall Street titans:
its spread to corporate America and state and local governments.
Companies from Goodyear Tire & Rubber Co. and Duke Energy
Corp. to Gannett Co. and Caterpillar Inc. are being forced to
tap emergency credit lines or pay more to borrow as investors
flee even firms with few links to the subprime-mortgage debacle.
California Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger says his and other
states may need emergency federal loans as funding dries up.
A cash crunch on Main Street would endanger companies'
basic functions -- paying suppliers, making payrolls and rolling
over debt. The widening of the crisis suggests that Bernanke and
Treasury Secretary Henry Paulson may have further fires to put
out even as the Treasury sets up the $700 billion financial-
industry rescue plan approved last week.
Hey, the large multinational company I work with has put out authoritative forecasts which have turned out to be bunk, and now, it appears that equipment leases will not be available. So through no fault of my own, my cash forecasts indicate that federal aid is required. I figure that to make payroll and expenses, and not help in freezing the local economy, $1 million is required.
Chump change.
How about you out there?
Be responsible now, ask for enough so that you can be adult and keep this economy moving.
``The rest of the economy is clearly being affected right
now by the tightness of credit,'' said Kurt Karl, chief U.S.
economist at Swiss Reinsurance Co. in New York. ``It's just
gathering momentum in the wrong direction.''
The market for commercial paper, which typically matures in
270 days or less and is used to help pay for expenses such as
payroll and rent, shrank to a three-year low of $1.6 trillion in
the week to Oct. 1, Fed data show.
Gannett, the largest U.S. newspaper publisher, said Oct. 1
it drew on a revolving credit line to ensure it had funds to
repay its commercial paper.
Duke, Caterpillar
Duke Energy, the owner of utilities in five U.S. states,
last week tapped about $1 billion from a $3.2 billion credit
agreement after concluding it may not be able to meet its plan
for new financing. Caterpillar, the biggest maker of earthmoving
equipment, had to pay the biggest premiums over Treasuries in at
least three decades at a sale of five-year and 10-year notes.
``Credit is the lubricant that oils the engine of the
economy'' and if it dries up ``then the engine seizes up,'' said
Republican Representative Michael Conaway of Texas, who switched
his vote last week to support the financial rescue. The
inability of a major corporation to renew its short-term loans
would have ``a devastating impact on the economy.''
Even as confidence grew that Congress would pass the
bailout, banks hoarded cash, indicating the proposed purchases
of devalued mortgage assets may not be able to stop the credit
crunch from widening.
I'm sure you already know about this. It was shown over and over on TV, right?
OK, so maybe it wasn't shown over and over, but surely it was shown on TV at least one time, wasn't it ?
This was the largest re-enlistment ceremony ever held in military history. The ceremony was held on the 4th of July, 2008 at Al Faw Palace, Baghdad ,Iraq . General David Petraeus officiated. This amazing story was ignored by the 'mainstream' media.
For those who have been in the Al Faw Palace, you'll have a better appreciation of the number of people crammed around the rotunda supporting the re-enlisting soldiers.
American men and women volunteering to stay longer in Iraq, so that when we leave, the new democracy will have a chance of surviving, is the exact opposite of what the media wants you to think about Iraq. If only a bomb had killed 5 civilians in a marketplace - now that's the kind of news the media is eager to tell you about.
A pizzeria in Chicago donated 2000 pizzas that were made and shipped to Baghdad , and were delivered on the 4th.
The media did report that 2000 pizzas were sent to Iraq on July 4th... The only part they left out of the report was the event for which the pizzas were sent.
I can't help but wonder...
What would the opinion of Americans be if they weren't getting such obviously biased 'news?'
If you pass this on, we will do the work where the Media won't.
Congress was front and center in the national news last week and the
American people were far from impressed. If they could vote to keep or
replace the entire Congress, 59% of voters would like to throw them all
out and start over again. The latest Rasmussen Reports national
telephone survey found that just 17% would vote to keep the current
legislators in office.
I think that is unrealistically high
Today, just 23% have even a little confidence in the
ability of Congress to deal with the nation's economic problems and
only 24% believe most Members of Congress understand legislation before
they vote on it.
Probably because they DON'T READ IT. Anyone remember how many members of Congress read the Iraq 2003 National Intelligence Estimate before voting on it? SEVEN. Any questions?
Last week, the House of Representatives initially rejected
a financial bailout bill proposed by the Bush Administration. Later,
after the Senate added a number of items that some call "pork" and
others call "sweeteners," the measure eventually passed. While the bill
survived Washington, it did so at a time when just 30% of voters favored it and 45% were opposed.
Only half (49%) believe that the current Congress is better than
individuals selected at random from the phone book. Thirty-three
percent (33%) believe a randomly selected group of Americans could do a
better job and 19% are not sure (see crosstabs).
A separate survey found that just 11% of voters say Congress is doing a good or an excellent job. (see crosstabsand recent trends).
Right into the harbor with the tea. Soon it will be Halloween and I have my indian outfit ready. Anyone else game?
These guys really want to pound on Bush?
Nancy, still want to go partisan and establish blame?
The US financial crisis has provoked an
outpouring of anti-Semitism on the Internet, with Jews being blamed for
the debacle on Wall Street, a monitoring group said on Thursday.
"The age-old canards about Jews and money are always just beneath the
surface," said Abraham Foxman, the national director of the
Anti-Defamation League (ADL), which fights anti-semitism.
"As
we witnessed after 9/11, whenever there is trouble or uncertainty in
the economy or world events, Jews become the scapegoats and ugly
anti-semitic canards are given new life."
The ADL said it had
witnessed "a dramatic upsurge" in anti-Semitic statements on online
discussion boards, and Internet service providers were struggling to
delete them.
Blogs devoted to conspiracy theories
as well as white supremacist and neo-Nazi websites have sought to
exploit events on Wall Street and the subprime crisis to support their
agendas, ADL said.
Referring to the demise of Wall Street bank Lehman Brothers,
one poster on white supremacist website Stormfront wrote: "I would
imagine the likelihood of the Fed etc bailing the company out depends
largely to what degree it is Jewish owned," according to ADL.
Lehman Brothers went bust, while a number of other financial institutions from home loan providers Freddie Mac and Fannie Mae and insurer AIG were nationalized by the US government.
How long until Iran, Egypt, Syria, KSA, Kuwait, and Chavez chime in?
Two can play at geopolitical displacement roulette.
The Pipeline War: Russian bear goes for West's jugular
Georgia has today withdrawn its troops from the capital of South Ossetia, according to reports.
South Ossetia IS Georgia. That would be like us withdrawing troops from Arizona after Mexico invaded to reduce the pressure on the USA.
The ceasefire came just hours after claims emerged Russian jets had bombed a vital pipeline that supplies oil to the West.
After
a day of heightening international tensions, Georgian leaders claimed
that the Baku-Tbilisi-Ceyhan pipeline, which transports oil from the
Caspian Sea to Turkey, had been attacked. But it is thought the bombs
missed their target.
Their claims came after Russian jets struck deep into the territory
of its tiny neighbour, killing civilians and 'completely devastating'
the strategic Black Sea port of Poti, a staging post for oil and other
energy supplies.
Reports last night also said that Russia had bombed the international airport in Tbilisi.
Georgian economic development minister Ekaterina Sharashidzne said:
'This clearly shows that Russia has targeted not just Georgian economic
outlets but international economic outlets as well.'
The
pipeline is 30 per cent owned by BP and supplies 1 per cent of the
world's oil needs, pumping up to a million barrels of crude per day to
Turkey.
Russian Ships Steam Toward Georgia as Conflict Grows (Update1)
By Paul Abelsky and Alex Nicholson
Aug. 10 (Bloomberg) -- Russia sent warships from the Black
Sea fleet toward Georgia as it stepped up its conflict with the
former Soviet republic over the separatist South Ossetia region.
The ships included a vessel based in the naval port of
Sevastopol and four others from Novorossiysk, Komsomolskaya
Pravda reported, without saying where it got the information.
Georgian Economic Development Minister Eka Sharashidze said a
ship carrying grain to the Georgian port of Poti was turned away
by a Russian warship, suggesting an economic blockade.
``Russia has shown itself capable of crossing every line in
this conflict,'' Sharashidze said in a telephone interview late
yesterday from Tbilisi, the Georgian capital.
Ukraine threatens to bar Russian warships-Interfax

MOSCOW, Aug 10 (Reuters) - Ukraine said on Sunday it reserved the right
to bar Russian warships dispatched to the Georgian coast from returning
to their Ukrainian base of Sevastopol, Interfax news agency reported.
"Ukraine ... reserves the right to bar warships and vessels which could
take part in the action (conflict with Georgia) from returning to
Ukrainian territory until the conflict is solved," it said, quoting a
Ukrainian Foreign Ministry statement. Russia's Black Sea Fleet is based in the Ukrainian port of Sevastopol. (Writing by Oleg Shchedrov)
30,000 homeless as a chaotic conflict intensifies
Putin condemns 'genocide'

missiles kill dozens in Georgia's frontline city as peace effort gets
under way
By Shaun Walker, Kim Sengupta and Rupert Cornwell in Gori, Tbilisi and Washington Sunday, 10 August 2008
As many as 2,000 people may have been killed and 30,000 made
homeless as the chaotic conflict between Georgian and Russian forces in
the pro-Moscow enclave of South Ossetia entered its second bloody day.
Georgia's
parliament approved a state of war across the country for the next 15
days, while also calling for a ceasefire. The Russian President, Dmitry
Medvedev, said that there would be no talks until Georgian troops left
the conflict zone
Of course, the CONFLICT ZONE IS INSIDE GEORGIA'S UNDISPUTED INTERNATIONAL BORDERS.
We have now seen REPEATEDLY, certainly since the radiation poisoning in Britain, who and what Russia is.
THE USSR.
With money.
Let's act like it.
Let's put the heat on somewhere else. Kazakhstan. Tadjikistan. Cuba. Venezuela. Someplace that COUNTS. ANd while we're at it, PUBLICALLY announce plans for expanding the Army, Navy, Air Force, and Marines, INSTEAD OF TRUMPETING things like reducing our 751 air superiority F-15 A-D's to 183 F-22's.
We have a LOT of challenges besides worldwide jihadism.
Russsia, China, Pakistan, Chavez, Castro....the looming energy natural resource 'war' , and our own procrastination and irresponsibility in supplying ourselves with enough energy.
Is BHO up to ALL OF THAT?
Maybe Barry can talk them out of their behavior.

UPDATE FROM TELEGRAPH UK:
Georgia: Russia demands to be regarded as number one
Why has Russia reverted to traditional means of controlling its former
satellite states? At the heart of Vladimir Putin's aggressive nationalism is
his firm belief that the power of the West is on the wane, says James Sherr.
Russia's brutal demonstration of power in South Ossetia, a
breakaway region of its southern neighbour Georgia, marks the latest -
and most alarming - sign of the Kremlin's determination to reclaim
control over former Soviet states.
These former satellites have
now been left in no doubt that Russia must be regarded as "glavniy", or
number one, if they wish to avoid the fate of Georgia. Central to
Vladimir Putin's nationalistic policy is a conviction that the power of
the West - seemingly unassailable at the end of the Cold War - is on
the wane. The current crisis demonstrates that the Cold War has not
been replaced by common values between East and West, but by the
revival of hard Realpolitik. The episode is a perfect application of what Russian military
scientists call "reflexive control": the defeat of an adversary through
his own efforts. It is also an application of Clausewitz's maxim that
war is a tool of policy.
The aim of Russia's policy, succinctly
expressed in 1992, is to "be leader of stability and security on the
entire territory of the former USSR". What has changed in recent years
is not the aim - endlessly reiterated in 16 years of presidential
declarations, "foreign policy concepts" and military doctrines - but
the "correlation of forces". As Yeltsin declared to Russia's
intelligence services in 1994, "global ideological confrontation has
been replaced by a struggle for spheres of interest in geopolitics".
Back then, Russia had little to struggle with. Today, that is no longer
the case.
If Western interests are not to be irreparably damaged,
we will need to understand that they are being tested on three
overlapping levels: local, regional and global. Georgia is not just a
square on a chessboard, but a country that is extremely important in
its own right. For two reasons, the West cannot be indifferent to what happens there.
First, despite the uncultivated instincts of its president, Georgia's
political culture is fundamentally democratic, its people (80 per cent
of whom support Nato membership) profoundly pro-Western, and its sense
of national identity almost indestructible. Georgia can be defeated by
Russia, but it can no longer submit to it, and therefore war between
Georgia and Russia would be a frightening prospect even if no wider
interests existed. Second, the only energy pipeline in the former USSR
independent of Russian control passes through Georgia. There will be no
meaningful energy security, let alone diversification of energy
supplies, if these pipelines become vulnerable to sabotage, like those
in Iraq, or to takeover by shadow businesses fronting for Russian
interests.
Harry's Place,
a UK blog dedicated to promoting the ideals of freedom and democracy,
is being sued by Mohammed Sawalha, the President of the British Muslim
Initiative, which has been linked to Hamas and the Islamic Brotherhood,
both terrorist organizations. The blog reports that Mr. Sawalha, according to the BBC...
"master
minded much of Hamas' political and military strategy" and in London
"is alleged to have directed funds, both for Hamas' armed wing, and for
spreading its missionary dawah".
In their revelation of the impending lawsuit against them leveled by Mohammed Sawalha, they write:
Mr
Sawalha claims that we have "chosen a malevolent interpretation of a
meaningless word". In fact, we did no more than translate a phrase
which appeared in an Al Jazeera report of Mr Sawalha's speech. When Al
Jazeera changed that phrase from "Evil Jew" to "Jewish Lobby", we
reported that fact, along with the statement that it had been a
typographical error.
Mr Sawalha has been the prime mover in a number of Hamas and Muslim Brotherhood associated projects. He is President of the British Muslim Initiative. He is the past President of the Muslim Association of Britain. He was the founder of IslamExpo, and is registered as the holder of the IslamExpo domain name. He is also a trustee of the Finsbury Park Mosque....
...Mr
Sawalha says that the attribution of the phrase "Evil Jew" to him
implies that he is "anti-semitic and hateful". Notably, he does not
take issue with our reporting of the revelation, made in a Panorama
documentary in 2006, that he is a senior activist in the clerical
fascist terrorist organisation, Hamas.
It looks
like Harry's Place is going up against some pretty top-notch lawyers on
this one, and they've got guts, but as the post goes on to say:
If Mr Sawalha persists in attempting to silence us with this desperate legal suit, we will need your help.
We won't be able to stand up to them alone.
This is why we've started this blogburst, to get the word out that we won't let members of Hamas or any radical terrorist group censor us or any of our fellow bloggers.

Should we be headed east? Are the jewish neocons destroying the nation? Do we need to become socialist, instead of whatever we are? Should we pound the Al Saud to ashes and dust instead of being AH buds? Should we all speak spanish? Or chinese? Should we ban meat? Stop all taxes? Should we invade Iran, kill their leaders, and convert them? Put me in the category of being unhappy with the nation's direction, but none of the reasons for that would lead me to conclude anything but that the election of Obama would make me even more unhappy.
Barack(??? If it was the other way around would they say 'John'?)
finally has his bounce. For weeks many political experts and pollsters
have been wondering why the race between Democrat Barack Obama and Republican John McCain had stayed so tight, even after the Illinois senator wrested the nomination from Hillary Clinton.
With numbers consistently showing rock-bottom approval ratings for
President Bush and a large majority of Americans unhappy with the
country's direction, the opposing-party candidate should, in the normal
course, have attracted more disaffected voters. Now it looks as if
Obama is doing just that. A new NEWSWEEK Poll shows that he has a substantial double-digit lead, 51 percent to 36 percent, over McCain among registered voters nationwide.
This kind of poll is about the lead I would have expected. But by the time November rolls around the landscape will have changed a dozen times. Never the less, if this story doesn't, by its sycophant-ish, sick sweet, referral to Barack demonstrate the fact that the MSM is not just in the tank but PROMOTING Obama, then we only need to consider that only Fox has bothered to report in detail (or at all) the story of multiple party leaders (including a former prez candidate - Dodd) receiving sweetheart loans from Countrywide mortgage, amid phone calls to their CEO looking for preferential treatment, while the mortgage crisis bloomed around them.
CIA's Hayden: Syria was on verge of becoming nuclear power
WASHINGTON -- The U.S. intelligence community, in an about-face from
an assessment of less than a year ago, has concluded that Syria was
close to becoming a nuclear power.
"In the course of a year after they got full up they would have produced
enough plutonium for one or two weapons," CIA director Michael Hayden said.
The new assessment was that Syria was weeks away from
operating a North Korean-built plutonium production plant near the Turkish
border.
That facility, the intelligence community assessed, could have
produced up to two bombs in the first year of operation.
On April 28, Hayden said the Syrian reactor could have begun producing
sufficient amounts of plutonium for an atomic weapon.
Speaking to reporters
after an address at Georgetown University, the CIA director said information
of the North Korean-designed nuclear reactor came from Israel and could not
be shared with the IAEA until mid-April.
"We've made it clear we did not have complete control over the totality
of the information because obviously it was the result of a team effort,
Hayden said. "One has to respect the origin of the information in terms of
how it is used."
Officials acknowledged that the U.S. assessment marked a near reversal
of that in July 2007 when Israel provided aerial photographs of the plant
and a video of the North Korean scientists inside.
At the time, the
officials said, the CIA and State Department said the North Korean
facility -- destroyed by the Israel Air Force in September 2007 -- was years
away from being completed and even tested.
"Much of the revision of the CIA assessment came after the Israeli
bombing when evidence of nuclear material was found," an official said. "We
also learned a lot from the Syrian refusal to the International Atomic
Energy Agency to visit the site."
Officials acknowledged that the State Department, particularly Secretary
of State Condoleezza Rice sought to play down the Israeli evidence. They
said Ms. Rice and her aides recruited CIA analysts who asserted that the
Syrian facility, termed Al Kibar, was not designed for an atomic bomb.
Ms. Rice and Assistant Secretary of State Christopher Hill were said to
have argued that any determination of a North Korean nuclear facility in
Syria would torpedo U.S.-led negotiations for Pyongyang to dismantle its
nuclear weapons program. Officials said Israel did not report any uranium
shipments to Al Kibar.
And we'd much rather fool ourselves rather than look like fools for a moment. Is Rice then QUALIFIED for high office? If this is the response of a republican UNILATERALIST administration, a rogue outfit, what on earth will happen when Carter II takes office? And now we know why Israel was so silent, because the Bush administration DEMANDED it. FOR POLITICAL REASONS..to not destroy negotiations with a power that has never honored an agreement?
The U.S. intelligence community eventually agreed with the Israeli
assessment of a North Korean nuclear program in Syria. Officials said Hayden
agreed with analysts who determined that Pyongyang violated its February
2007 pledge to halt nuclear proliferation. The intelligence community
suspected that North Korea had been helping Syria's nuclear program since
2001.
By June 2007, officials said, the CIA received information from Israel
that North Korea was building a suspected nuclear reactor. Officials said
the Israeli aerial and ground-based photographs overcame doubts that stemmed
from satellite images of the facility.
At that point, Hayden said, the U.S. intelligence community dismissed
arguments that the reactor could be meant for energy production. He said the
Israeli photographs also showed that the building was a nuclear reactor.
"Our team effort on the Al Kibar reactor is a case study in rigorous
analytic tradecraft, skillful human and technical collection, and close
collaboration with our community colleagues and liaison partners," Hayden
said on April 24. Our officers put in long hours on this issue for many
months, and their hard work paid off by directly advancing our nation's
security and that of our allies."
A new BBC poll found that international support for tough sanctions and
military action against Iran has fallen over the past year.
In a 2006 survey, more than 35 percent in 14 of 21 countries polled
supported taking military action against Iran over its defiance of
calls by the UN and the international community to stop enriching
uranium. In 2008, the number of countries in which 35 percent or more
favored military action dropped to nine.
Most of the 30,000 polled favored allowing Iran to produce nuclear fuel under UN supervision.
Over 40 percent of those polled in Middle Eastern countries favored the diplomatic track as the best way to solve the conflict.
In Britain, support for severe action against Iran dropped to 34
percent, down from 43 percent in 2006, and a similar decline was
reported in Australia and Germany. All in all, only nine percent
support a military operation against the Islamic Republic worldwide.
Come to grips with the KIND of minority we are really in folks.
The United States and South Korea were the only countries in which respondents favored tougher action against Iran.
Support for such measures has dropped 10 points in Australia (52
per cent to 42 per cent), nine points in Britain (43 per cent to 34 per
cent), nine points in Germany (46 per cent to 37 per cent), seven
points in Canada (52 per cent to 45 per cent) and six points in the
United States (66 per cent to 60 per cent).
Only three countries show an increase in support for economic sanctions
or military strikes: an increase of nine points among Israelis (62 per
cent to 71 per cent), six points among South Koreans (47 per cent to 53
per cent), and 12 points among Turkish respondents (21 per cent to 33
per cent).
That's it in the world. THAT'S IT. With the NIE, the Axis of Evil has been inverted.
There are only three nations in the world with majorities ready to commit to action against a nuclear Iran ready to WIPE OUT another nation (threats of which are a violation of the UN 'law' in and of itself), one of which is the purported victim itself. That is not a function of George Bush or any American policies.
The poll was conducted following news of the U.S. National Intelligence
Estimate that found Iran had stopped pursuing nuclear weapons in 2003.
It should be quite clear that the NIE itself has been devastating to the USA, and a great boon to our enemies.
The group dubbed "Cities against Islamisation" was presented to the
media in the northern Belgian city of Antwerp by
Filip Dewinter, head
of the far-right Belgian party Vlaams Belang (Flemish Interest) along
with Austrian FPOE leader Heinz-Christian Strace and Robert Spieler of
the regionalist Alsace First group.
Parties from Britain (the British National Party), Denmark, Germany
and Italy were also represented at the launch of the group which has a
road-sign-style crossed-out mosque as its logo.

These ethnic nationalist (i.e. WHITE first) groups, have no place among those fighting for FREEDOM and EQUITY against jihadism. They are the Battista's and Franco's of the war against communism, ON THEIR BEST DAY. They are closer to David Duke than anything I care to be associated with, and lack only primacy on their 'list' to others instead of Islamist radicals to make them visible as what they are. Their fundamentally and necessarily racist result will deligitimize standing against radical islam.
Being back from a blitz of work and viewing the detritus of greed, incompetence and ignorance littering the american landscape tonight is not only sobering, but also sickening.
There can be no argument that American power has been based in our economic prowess, which was based on the idea that freedom and property cannot be separated, and that capitalism and individual rights are together the inalienable right to pursue happiness and real freedom from want and need. That idea makes entrepreneurship the ne plus ultra of the USA. Our biz, our home, our castle and to hell, if needs be, with the rest.
Until the 1980's that prowess was based upon MAKING THINGS. Things we can touch. Now as among the first to send a ttl pulse around a bunch of IC's to change the micro voltage on an lcd, I can understand that Microsoft, Borland, and Microprose make things.
But so are Hondas powered by fuel cells, Sharp 108" LCD's and Kenmore washing machines. I see a commercial for the Toyota Tundra which ends with the claim they are designed, engineered, and manufactured in the USA. SO where does the profit (the reason for the entire proposition) go?
That brings us to the crux of this. The idea that a financial instrument is a THING is a tune for greed. The idea that higher stock price is the goal and not the byproduct of better PRODUCT is a song of avariciousness. The siren song of our time is that greed is acceptable, and it has been sold by CEO's who can look in the mirror and justify $13 million for themselves while service in a major multinational corporation is cut back and people lose jobs, since less salaries mean less cost and a more productive APPEARING statistic among those left with jobs. This ideal has been espoused in the sad stories of Tyco, Adelphia and others, but make no mistake, like steroids and speed, all the players are, if not engaged, wondering if they are schmucks for not playing.
Sub prime mortgages appear to have the possibility of being THE straw.
Through greed we invented the 90's Internet stock fallacies of non things and falsified an entire economic gestalt. Through greed we sell the american dream of a home to those who have NO chance at affording it, and in struggling to make the payment on the unpayable, undermine the electric companies, the credit card payments, destroy their ability to make durable purchases, and their own future credit, and shake the world as a Citibank seekd first 7.5 billion from Abu Dhabi and now 24 more billion from China and the Al Saud. Bank of America rushes in to save Countrywide mortgage in a deal which the SEC would probably nix, but we all know as the fed makes move after futile move that national confidence is vastly more important right now.
Neither Ford, nor GM, nor a spun out Chrysler is the first to a fuel cell to market because they are too busy making a more durable buggy whip of an engine, and lobbying congress that this pattern as a good idea.
Bush pushes an immigration deal and seems confused and angry when a large % of the American populace rises in indignation.
We have NO CONFIDENCE in the government we have chosen time after time. When they tell us 'this' will fix 'it' we change channels. And there's nothing good on.
Thus China, the UAE, and the Al Saud come to have 'soft' power in American financial institutions. Institutions which provide capital for ideas, loan guarantees, and national aspirations. Of course, 'so sorry we will have to get rid of 24,000 people in order to be responsible'.
While the deals may yet fall through, announcements are expected
shortly. The talks come as Citigroup is expected to disclose additional
huge losses stemming from bad mortgage-related investments. Analysts
project the company is likely to announce charges of $12 billion to $18
billion - and possibly more - when it reports earnings on Tuesday.
Greed is not capitalism, and just as Jimmy Carter claims he is not antisemitic, but yet fulfills every function of one, these marketing frauds who think a financial instrument can be a thing, or the covetous CEO making 400 times the line worker's salary, they have fulfilled every result of the actions of a traitor. They can claim cleanly they are no such thing, but they have been as damaging as the worst we have ever had
They have harmed this nation as much as if they transferred a carrier task force to our enemies, by granting them OWNERSHIP of our future by their short sighted nature, and their ravenous need for the Lexus instead of the Olds.
Now we have only the choice of letting these institutions DIE, and losing confidence in the USA's economy (which they want to be now based on BUYING not creating), or letting those with cash BUY our ailing institutions.
Just as their is no escape from what radical Islam means, there is no escape from this dance.
Anyone who thinks China, the UAE and the Al Saud will be soft with 32 billion TILL TODAY needs a bridge in lower Manhattan.
And the answer you Paulista morons, is not the gold standard loving, Don Black, Stormfront philic, John Birch following, fluoride in the water is a communist plot, CRACKPOT who is getting off scott free at every debate, but clearly until today the republicans and and democrats have failed us miserably. If they cannot manage this nation, just let us know.
We have been there before.
This nation is ours. Not Exxon's. Not Citigroup's. Not Toyota's, and not the Al Saud's.
We are in trouble, and it's not just islamozoid freaks who think if we make up our on laws we defy god's.
Greed is not capitalism, and avaricious coveting of things is NOT the American way.
Acquisition is a byproduct of professional behavior.
Anyone who thinks that makes me a fool, is a fool.
From the one and only MEMRI, whose mirror needs only fidelity to be a funhouse viewer.
Muslim Brotherhood Leader Sheikh Mahdi 'Akef: We Are Ready to Send
10,000 Men to Palestine,But Egyptian Government Should Arm Them;
There's No Such Thing as Al-Qaeda – The Americans Made It Up
The following are excerpts from an interview with Muslim Brotherhood in Egypt leader Sheikh Muhammad Mahdi 'Akef, which aired on Al-Hiwar TV on November 30, 2007.
Interviewer: "During the Israeli aggression against
Lebanon, you said that the Muslim Brotherhood was prepared to arm
10,000 young men, and to send them to Lebanon in order to support the
resistance. Does this apply to Palestine too?"
'Akef: "This applies to any country under occupation.
HEY, THAT'S GOOD NEWS, SYRIA IS OCCUPYING LEBANON, RIGHT?
'Akef: One of the principles of the Muslim Brotherhood is to rid the Arab and
Islamic nation of any foreign rule. The Muslim Brotherhood must support
all the forces of resistance in the Arab and Islamic world."
Interviewer: "From where will they get the weapons?"
'Akef: "I don't know. I was talking about men, not weapons. I said we would recruit 10,000 men..."
Interviewer: "Armed men..."
'Akef: "No, you added the word 'armed.' The government
must arm these people. When I fought in Palestine,
the government knew
about it. The government trained and armed us. As you well know, the
military commanders worked with the Muslim Brotherhood. When we fought
the English in 1951 in the [Suez] Canal, the government knew about it.
We would undergo weapons training within [Al-Azhar] University."
ROP?
[...]
'Akef: "In no country and under no circumstances is it
possible to launch resistance unless the government approves of it.
Otherwise, we would be fighting the government, which is not our
policy."
ISN'T THAT A GREAT PIECE OF DIALECTIC? C'MON GUYS & GALS !
[...]
Interviewer: "There are Sunnis, members of Al-Qaeda, who
kill civilians in the name of Islam. There are Shi'ites who kill Sunnis
in the name of Islam..."
'Akef: "All these things are American Zionist tricks.
OY VAY IZ MEER, THEY FOUND OUT!
'Akef: The Shi'ites attack one another, the Sunnis attack one another, and the
Sh'iites attack the Sunnis. But the Muslim Brotherhood has a principle,
which I declared from day one: The Shi'ites and Sunnis are brothers."
[...]
'Akef: "I'd like to go back to the issue of Al-Qaeda.
There is no such thing as Al-Qaeda. This is an American invention, so
that they will have something to fight for..."
Interviewer: "What about Osama bin Laden, Al-Zawahiri, and the Islamic State of Iraq?"
'Akef: "When one man, or two or three, fight this tyrannical global superpower - is it worth anything?"
Interviewer: "Thousands have carried out attacks in the Iraq in the name of Al-Qaeda..."
'Akef: "That is a lie. Who says so?"
Interviewer: "They do."
'Akef: "No, the Americans and their collaborators say this."
Interviewer: "But they claim responsibility for these attacks..."
'Akef: "Al-Qaeda has an ideology, which makes them..."
Interviewer: "You described it once as a perverted ideology."
'Akef: "Of course it is. It is a perverted ideology,
which employs methods that do not please Allah. How can I kill a Muslim
when this is forbidden?"
Iran shuts down 24 cafes in Internet crackdown
TEHRAN (Reuters) -
Iranian police have closed down 24
Internet cafes and other coffee shops in as many hours,
detaining 23 people, as part of a broad crackdown on immoral
behavior in the Islamic state, official media said on Sunday.
The action in Tehran province was the latest move in a
campaign against fashion and other practices deemed
incompatible with Islamic values, including women flouting
strict dress codes and barber shops offering men Western hair
styles.
"Using immoral computer games, storing obscene photos ...
and the presence of women wearing improper hijab were among the
reasons why they have been closed down," Colonel Nader Sarkari,
a provincial police commander, said.
Since Mahmoud Ahmadinejad won the presidency in 2005,
promising a return to the values of the 1979 Islamic
revolution, hardliners have pressed for tighter controls on
"immoral behaviour."
Sarkari told the official IRNA news agency that police had
inspected 435 coffee shops in the past 24 hours, and 170 had
been warned.
The report did not make clear whether they were all
Internet cafes, which have mushroomed in Iran over the past few
years and are popular especially among young people. Police
were not immediately available for comment.
"Twenty-three people were detained," Sarkari said, adding
11 of them were women.
Many young Iranians are avid users of the Internet, some
using chat rooms to socialise with the opposite sex. Mingling
between sexes outside marriage is banned and many Web sites
considered unIslamic are blocked by the authorities.
The cafe crackdown coincides with a winter campaign against
women wearing tight trousers tucked into long boots and other
"improper dress" such as short overcoats and hats instead of
scarves.
Enforcement of Islamic dress codes that require women to
cover their hair and disguise the shape of their bodies has
become stricter since 2005, following eight years of reformist
rule.
Police regularly clamp down on skimpier clothing and looser
headscarves in the summer, but usually for only a few weeks.
This year the campaign has run into the winter.
Women found dressing inappropriately may be warned and
repeat offenders can be taken to a police station and fined.
"Our people want their women to be able to go in the
streets with respect and want their dignity to be protected,"
senior Iranian cleric Ahmad Khatami told worshippers in Tehran
on Friday. "Our people want the society to be morally clean."
In a separate campaign, IRNA said police had inspected 275
restaurants in the capital to check compliance with a new ban
on smoking in public places. The ban includes water pipes,
known in Iran as qalyan, offered in some outlets.
Of those, 138 received a warning and 17 were shut down,
police official Mohammad Reza Alipour said.
It's time to break out the real main weapons.....nekid wimmin and mickeydeeeeeeeeeeees. Leave no one alive.
Putin rival held in psychiatric ward 'to prevent him protesting against government'
A Russian opposition activist has been sent to a psychiatric hospital by authorities a day before a planned
demonstration.
Artem Basyrov's detention is the latest in a series of incidents
suggesting a punitive Soviet-era practice is being revived under
president Vladimir Putin.
Mr Basyrov, 20, was ordered to be held at a hospital in the
central region of Mari El on November 23, a day before planned
demonstrations, said Alexander Averin of the opposition National
Bolshevik Party.
The party is part of the Other Russia coalition which organised the so-called Dissenters' Marches across the country this year.
Mr Basyrov ran for the local legislature as an Other Russia candidate.
Police who originally detained him claimed he had assaulted a girl.
A local psychiatric board agreed, deciding the activist suffered
from a mental illness and he was committed to the psychiatric hospital
three weeks ago.
Is this all there is over there? It is not even a CHIMERA of Soviet practices, it is PRECISELY Soviet practices.
WASHINGTON (Reuters) - U.S. intelligence has determined that Iran
halted its nuclear weapons program in 2003 but believes it is
continuing to develop technical capabilities that could be used for
building a bomb, a government report said on Monday.
The latest National Intelligence Estimate released by the Bush
administration also said Iran would likely be capable of producing
enough enriched uranium for a nuclear weapon "sometime during the
2010-2015 time-frame."
(Reporting by Matt Spetalnick, editing by Patricia Wilson)
According to THIS BOOK: less than 6 months later, the IAEA, the European T-3 (Britain, German and France) all found otherwise, let alone our own intelligence, and THIS BOOK details how careerist policy empires, and the need to be right trumps any consideration of national interest time and time again.
I will remind readers that it took the USA using technology extant in 1944 TEN MONTHS to make a working U-235 weapon from solving the technological problems of gaseous diffusion. Using P-2 centrifuges the BEST case is that Iran is months away from this situation. The IAEA confirms over 3000 P-2's in operation now. They are building more.
That is what WE KNOW ABOUT.
I will also remind readers that no national intelligence entity, ours or others, has EVER accurately predicted the state of another nation's nuclear weapons programs within a factor of YEARS.
NONE. EVER.
When Pakistan finally tested a weapon in 1998, it later came out they had a STOCKPILE of weapons they were completely confident in, and tested one for political reasons.
Bolton relates with unmistakable detail just how far things went even in 2004, months after this purported conclusion, when Chirac told the Americans, it was impossible to trust the Shia in any agreement.
We, here in the USA, have a highly politicized, and highly partisan CIA whose leaks are engineered for political purposes which may not benefit the nation, and the safety of the people. However one feels, the arrogation of leaking national security information, correct or purposefully incorrect against the will of our elected leaders, republican or democrat, is unlawful domestic political action by the CIA, and people should be taken to task.
TODAY
UPDATE:
Yet at the same time officials were airing these dire warnings,
analysts at the Central Intelligence Agency were secretly concluding
that Iran's nuclear weapons work halted years ago and that
international pressure on the Islamic regime in Tehran was working.
The conclusions, arriving with stunning suddenness, are most likely
to be a major factor in the tense international negotiations aimed at
getting Iran to halt its nuclear energy program, and they come in the
middle of a U.S. presidential campaign during which a possible military
strike against Iran's nuclear program has been discussed.
Why would the administration release such findings in direct contradiction to every single thing which they have no tonly been saying, but which organizations lined up against this admin have found themselves, such as the IAEA?
More from the Guardian
The White House national security adviser, Stephen Hadley, at a press
conference yesterday, denied there were echoes of the intelligence
failure over Iraq's phantom weapons of mass destruction. He said that
Iran was "one of a handful of the hardest intelligence targets going"
and the new intelligence had only arrived in the past few months. As
soon as it did, both the president and Congress had been briefed. He
warned that there would be a tendency now to think "the problem is less
bad than we thought, let's relax. Our view is that would be a mistake."
Western intelligence confirms Syria's strategic 'double game' with Al Qaida
GERTZ - LONDON — New information has clarified Syria's key role in Al Qaida
recruitment and operations.
Western intelligence sources said European and U.S. intelligence
agencies have determined that Syria is a critical link in Al Qaida's
campaign against the West. The sources said Syria, often in cooperation with
Iran, has enabled Al Qaida to plan major strikes and recruit operatives.
DUH, really?
"Syria plays a very effective double game," an intelligence source said.
"She pretends to cooperate against Al Qaida while allowing the group to
maintain operations for strategic strikes against the West."
Anyone who ever DREAMED that Syria was aiding the west, needs to be 'redeployed' to the Antarctic Intelligence Desk
The intelligence sources said Syria's role was clarified in an
investigation of an Al Qaida cell in Germany. They said the commander of the
Al Qaida cell, identified as Fritz Gelowicz, became a senior operative in
Damascus in 2005.
Gelowicz, a convert to Islam, met a senior Al Qaida operative in an
Islamic seminary in Damascus and was later recruited for training in
Pakistan. In 2006, the sources said, Gelowicz and other Al Qaida recruits
entered Pakistan via Iran, which has also been supporting the Sunni Islamic
movement.
Everyone get that picture? Sunni-Shia against the main enemy, the unbeliever.
"This is where Al Qaida recruitment takes place — in Islamic seminaries
that are both supported by the Syrian regime and yet maintain an
unprecedented
freedom of action under President Bashar Assad," the source said.
The sources said EU intelligence agencies have identified several
Islamic seminaries as gateways for Al Qaida recruits. They said the schools,
which also cater to foreign converts to Islam, have been used to process
volunteers to fight the U.S.-led coalition in Iraq. The flow of foreign
volunteers was said to have dropped by 50 percent in 2007.
"The seminaries are heavily monitored by Syrian intelligence and
cooperate with the regime," the source said. "The deal is that Al Qaida
operatives provide information in exchange for being allowed to operate in
Syria. It's a very beneficial arrangement for both sides, especially as
Syria does not want to become a target of Al Qaida."
In September, unidentified assassins killed a Syrian regarded as a key
theologian of Al Qaida. Mahmoud Aghasi, 34, was killed outside his mosque
in northern Syria after he was accused by Islamic opposition members of
working for the Syrian regime. In 2006, Aghasi said Al Qaida sent more than
2,000 fighters to Iraq.
Amir Taheri, a leading Middle East analyst, said Aghasi, protected by
Syrian intelligence, was believed to have also worked for U.S. intelligence
in a switch that angered the Assad regime. Taheri said this led to Aghasi's
death.
"The Syrian authorities claim he was killed by two former jihadists from
Iraq who had defected to the U.S. forces there," Taheri said. "But it is
rumored in pro-jihadist circles that Agassi had worked for both the Syrians
and the Americans. In this theory, the self-styled Sword of the Faith had
started working for Syrian intelligence before getting a better offer from
the Americans. When he switched sides, the Syrians decided to put him on the
fast track to martyrdom."
BASRA, Iraq (AFP) -
Police in Basra
have detained 267 foreign "criminals" as Iraq's second city witnessed
clashes between Shiite militiamen and security forces, officials said
on Thursday.
The city's police chief Jalil Khalil Shuail said the police detained 267 foreigners from Afghanistan, Saudi Arabia, Syria and Iran who "infiltrated into Basra and committed crimes."
A list of our true friends and allies, eh?
On Wednesday, Suhail himself escaped an assassination attempt by gunmen
who fired on him as he took a tour of a local market. One of his guards
was killed in the shooting.
The defence ministry, meanwhile, said there had been clashes between
militiamen loyal to Shiite cleric Moqtada al-Sadr and police in recent
days.
Why is Sadr around? Why do we have a CIA?
Ministry spokesman Major General Mohammed al-Askari said the violence
was "simple and the security situation in Basra was under control."
Translation ..."We are going to simply kill the bad guys"?
"The incidents reported were tackled by our security forces, both the army and the police," he said.
Basra has remained in the grips of a turf war between rival Shiite
militias since British troops pulled out of the city in September.
About 5,250 British troops are now stationed at Basra airport, outside the city.
Britain's Prime Minister Gordon Brown said earlier this month that Britain would cut these numbers by more than half to 2,500 from early next year.
The troops based at Basra airport are mostly engaged in training Iraqi army and police units, the new guardians of the city.
MAYBE..just MAYBE the Shia in souther Iraq are not so enamored of the Iranians as we imagine. They are arabs. Iranians are not.
Report: Iran acquiring fighter jets that are based on Israeli technology JPOST:
Iran has signed a deal with China to purchase 24 J-10
fighter jets between 2008 and 2010, Russian news agency Novosti
reported. The jets were developed based on the technology of Israel's
Lavi fighter jet, whose technology was sold to China against the wishes
of the US.
Novosti stated that the J-10 has a range of 2,940
kilometers, bringing it within range of Israel. Iran's current MiG-29
jets have a range of 2,100 kilometers.
A Russian military expert, quoted by the agency, said that Iran
plans to use the new aircraft as part of its defense of the Bushehr
nuclear facility in the face of a possible attack.
The Israeli Lavi fighter jet was developed in the 1980s but the
project was canceled following pressure from America, which feared that
the new jet would compete with its F-16 in international markets. The
US subsequently sold F-16s to Israel at reduced costs.
China began developing the J-10 in 2004 and currently has 89 aircraft in active service.
Novosti added that no response was given by the Prime Minister's office.
So in 2010, Israel might attack Iran and find there planes of Israeli design, with plans sold to china, built there and sold to Iran. Talk about stupid.
Whoever thought selling strategic information and weapons was smart, needs a new mirror
China to test space weapon in launching moon satellite: rights group
HONG KONG, Oct. 23 (AP) - (Kyodo)—A Chinese
submarine will send test signals that could change the course of a
satellite when China launches its first moon orbiter, as part of the
country's effort to develop space war technology, a human rights
watchdog said Tuesday.
The Information Center for Human Rights and
Democracy said two survey ships are deployed in the South Pacific Ocean
and South Atlantic Ocean to send signals to maneuver the lunar
exploration satellite, expected to be launched Wednesday. At the same
time, a nuclear-powered submarine will send simulated signals to the satellite as a test, it said in a statement.
Once the satellite-maneuvering technology matures, the group said,
China would have the know-how to destroy other satellites in space in
wartime. China could launch cheaply-made weapon-carrying objects into
space and change their courses to destroy or damage satellites of other
countries by sending signals from submarines, the center said.
China shocked the world in January by firing a missile at an old
weather satellite without notifying anyone in advance, showing off its
anti-satellite weaponry and its ability to shoot down satellites
without being immediately noticed.
Hong Kong's media reported
that a rocket that will carry the satellite was being fueled up,
banners of greetings on the successful launch were prepared and farmers
living near the Xichang Satellite Launch Center, in mid-western China's
Sichuan Province, will be evicted one hour ahead of the launch.
China plans to launch the satellite around 6 p.m. Wednesday, the
official Xinhua News Agency reported Monday, quoting a spokesman of the
China National Space Administration. The satellite is named Chang'e I
after the legendary Chinese goddess who, according to legend, flew to
the moon.
China's space industry enjoyed its first major
success after astronaut Yang Liwei reentered Earth after 21 hours in
space in 2003 in the spacecraft Shenzhou 5, marking China's first
successful manned space mission.
A second manned space mission
was successfully concluded in 2005 after astronauts Fei Junlong and Nie
Haisheng finished orbiting the Earth for five days in the spacecraft
Shenzhou 6.
BAGHDAD, Oct. 17 —Iraq
has agreed to award $1.1 billion in contracts to Iranian and Chinese
companies to build a pair of enormous power plants, the Iraqi
electricity minister said Tuesday.
Word of the project prompted serious
concerns among American military officials, who fear that Iranian
commercial investments can mask military activities at a time of
heightened tension with Iran.
The Iraqi electricity minister, Karim Wahid, said that the Iranian
project would be built in Sadr City, a Shiite enclave in Baghdad that
is controlled by followers of the anti-American cleric Moktada al-Sadr.
He added that Iran had also agreed to provide cheap electricity from
its own grid to southern Iraq, and to build a large power plant
essentially free of charge in an area between the two southern Shiite
holy cities of Karbala and Najaf.
The expansion of ties between Iraq and Iran comes as the United
States and Iran clash on nuclear issues and about what American
officials have repeatedly said is Iranian support for armed groups in
Iraq. American officials have charged that Iranians, through the
international military wing known as the Quds Force, are particularly
active in support of elite elements of the Mahdi Army, a militia
largely controlled by Mr. Sadr.
And then the money line:
An American military official in Baghdad said that while he had no
specific knowledge of the power plant contracts, any expansion of
Iranian interests was a concern for the military here.
Is there any point to all this? Create fortified bases in northern Iraq. MAYBE there is a chance for a democracy there. The Sunnis now depend on us for protection from the revenging Shia militias, dominated by people like Sadr who will NEVER be democratic allies of the USA, and certainly not of a polyglot, multi-religion American people.
We got rid of Saddam. We helped them to vote, and they did so several times. Al Qaeda has been decimated. These elected people in the govt are not even TRYING to be allies against our enemies. They are not allies.
Fine. We respect that vote. C-YA later.
Oh, and a slim reminder ...
Don't make us come back again. We'll be really angry with YOU ALL for the obvious reasons which will make us do something like that. You won't like us if we are angry that way.
Of the two new projects Iraq has agreed to finance, Mr. Wahid said,
the largest is a $940 million power plant in Wasit to be built by a
Chinese company, which he said was named Shanghai Heavy Industry. That
project would pump some 1,300 megawatts of electricity into the Iraqi
grid. For comparison, all of the plants currently connected to Iraq’s
grid produce a total of roughly 5,000 megawatts.
And we'll be providing security for this? Or since the 'Iraqi Shia IRGC' is responsible will there even be a need?
Can competing motives, partisan desires, and sheer ego make things worse? (Well actually, check out 1830-1860). Frankly, I would have a hard time voting for this TODAY, because of our men, and our needs vs Iran (and in Iraq), but let me tell you, I predict the Turks have dug a DEEP HOLE for themselves in the heart of the American people with this. Perhaps we would be far better off with a Kurdistan, and unconditional allies (at least for now).
WASHINGTON, Oct. 16 —
Worried about antagonizing Turkish leaders, House members from both
parties have begun to withdraw their support from a resolution
supported by the Democratic leadership that would condemn as genocide
the mass killings of Armenians nearly a century ago.
Almost a dozen lawmakers had shifted against the measure over the
last 24 hours, accelerating a sudden exodus that has cast deep doubt
over the measure’s prospects. Some representatives made clear that they
were heeding warnings from the White House, which has called the
measure dangerously provocative, and from the Turkish government, which
has said House passage would prompt Turkey to reconsider its ties to
the United States, including logistical support for the Iraq war.
Until today, the resolution appeared to be on a path to House passage, with strong support from the House speaker, Nancy Pelosi
of California. It was approved last week by the House Foreign Affairs
Committee. But this evening, a group of group of senior House Democrats
had made it known they were planning to ask the leadership to drop
plans for a vote on the measure.
“Turkey obviously feels they are getting poked in the eye over
something that happened a century ago, and maybe this isn’t a good time
to be doing that,” said Representative Allen Boyd, a Florida Democrat
who dropped his sponsorship of the resolution Monday night. .
Others who took the same action said that while they deplored the
mass killings of Armenians by the Ottoman Empire, beginning in 1915,
the modern-day consequences in the Middle East could not be overlooked.
“We simply cannot allow the grievances of the past — as real as they
may be — to in any way derail our efforts to prevent further atrocities
for future history books,” said Representative Wally Herger, Republican
of California.
“I think it is a good resolution and horrible timing,” said Representative Mike Ross, Democrat of Arkansas.
Leak Severed a Link to Al-Qaeda's Secrets Firm Says Administration's Handling of Video Ruined Its Spying Efforts
By Joby Warrick Washington Post Staff Writer Tuesday, October 9, 2007; A01
A small private intelligence company that monitors Islamic terrorist groups obtained a new Osama bin Laden
video ahead of its official release last month, and around 10 a.m. on
Sept. 7, it notified the Bush administration of its secret acquisition.
It gave two senior officials access on the condition that the officials
not reveal they had it until the al-Qaeda release.
Within
20 minutes, a range of intelligence agencies had begun downloading it
from the company's Web site. By midafternoon that day, the video and a
transcript of its audio track had been leaked from within the Bush
administration to cable television news and broadcast worldwide.
The
founder of the company, the SITE Intelligence Group, says this
premature disclosure tipped al-Qaeda to a security breach and destroyed
a years-long surveillance operation that the company has used to
intercept and pass along secret messages, videos and advance warnings
of suicide bombings from the terrorist group's communications network.
If a democratic administration was responsible for this kind of leak, or Dick Durbin's office (for instance), cries of TREASON would fill the air.
"Techniques that took years to develop are now ineffective and
worthless," said Rita Katz, the firm's 44-year-old founder, who has
garnered wide attention by publicizing statements and videos from
extremist chat rooms and Web sites, while attracting controversy over
the secrecy of SITE's methodology. Her firm provides intelligence about
terrorist groups to a wide range of paying clients, including private
firms and military and intelligence agencies from the United States and
several other countries.
The precise source of the leak remains
unknown. Government officials declined to be interviewed about the
circumstances on the record, but they did not challenge Katz's version
of events. They also said the incident had no effect on U.S.
intelligence-gathering efforts and did not diminish the government's
ability to anticipate attacks.
While acknowledging that SITE had
achieved success, the officials said U.S. agencies have their own
sophisticated means of watching al-Qaeda on the Web. "We have
individuals in the right places dealing with all these issues, across
all 16 intelligence agencies," said Ross Feinstein, spokesman for the
Office of the Director of National Intelligence.
You just have VERY LIMITED CREDIBILITY on this, don't you get it, admin? Hasn't the experience over the 'immigration' issue demonstrated this to you?
But privately,
some intelligence officials called the incident regrettable, and one
official said SITE had been "tremendously helpful" in ferreting out
al-Qaeda secrets over time.
The al-Qaeda video aired on Sept. 7
attracted international attention as the first new video message from
the group's leader in three years. In it, a dark-bearded bin Laden
urges Americans to convert to Islam and predicts failure for the Bush
administration in Iraq and Afghanistan.
The video was aired on hundreds of Western news Web sites nearly a full
day before its release by a distribution company linked to al-Qaeda.
Computer logs and records reviewed by The Washington Post
support SITE's claim that it snatched the video from al-Qaeda days
beforehand. Katz requested that the precise date and details of the
acquisition not be made public, saying such disclosures could reveal
sensitive details about the company's methods.
SITE -- an acronym
for the Search for International Terrorist Entities -- was established
in 2002 with the stated goal of tracking and exposing terrorist groups,
according to the company's Web site. Katz, an Iraqi-born Israeli
citizen whose father was executed by Saddam Hussein in the 1960s, has made the investigation of terrorist groups a passionate quest.
"We
were able to establish sources that provided us with unique and
important information into al-Qaeda's hidden world," Katz said. Her
company's income is drawn from subscriber fees and contracts.
Katz said she decided to offer an advance copy of the bin Laden video to the White House without charge so officials there could prepare for its eventual release.
She spoke first with White House counsel Fred F. Fielding,
whom she had previously met, and then with Joel Bagnal, deputy
assistant to the president for homeland security. Both expressed
interest in obtaining a copy, and Bagnal suggested that she send a copy
to Michael Leiter, who holds the No. 2 job at the National
Counterterrorism Center.
Administration and intelligence
officials would not comment on whether they had obtained the video
separately. Katz said Fielding and Bagnal made it clear to her that the
White House did not possess a copy at the time she offered hers.
Around
10 a.m. on Sept. 7, Katz sent both Leiter and Fielding an e-mail with a
link to a private SITE Web page containing the video and an English
transcript. "Please understand the necessity for secrecy," Katz wrote
in her e-mail. "We ask you not to distribute . . . [as] it could harm
our investigations."
Fielding replied with an e-mail expressing
gratitude to Katz. "It is you who deserves the thanks," he wrote,
according to a copy of the message. There was no record of a response
from Leiter or the national intelligence director's office.
Exactly
what happened next is unclear. But within minutes of Katz's e-mail to
the White House, government-registered computers began downloading the
video from SITE's server, according to a log of file transfers. The
records show dozens of downloads over the next three hours from
computers with addresses registered to defense and intelligence
agencies.
By midafternoon, several television news networks reported obtaining copies of the transcript. A copy posted around 3 p.m. on Fox News's
Web site referred to SITE and included page markers identical to those
used by the group. "This confirms that the U.S. government was
responsible for the leak of this document," Katz wrote in an e-mail to
Leiter at 5 p.m.
Al-Qaeda supporters, now alerted to the
intrusion into their secret network, put up new obstacles that
prevented SITE from gaining the kind of access it had obtained in the
past, according to Katz.
A small number of private intelligence
companies compete with SITE in scouring terrorists' networks for
information and messages, and some have questioned the company's
motives and methods, including the claim that its access to al-Qaeda's
network was unique. One competitor, Ben Venzke, founder of IntelCenter,
said he questions SITE's decision -- as described by Katz -- to offer
the video to White House policymakers rather than quietly share it with
intelligence analysts.
"It is not just about getting the video
first," Venzke said. "It is about having the proper methods and
procedures in place to make sure that the appropriate intelligence gets
to where it needs to go in the intelligence community and elsewhere in
order to support ongoing counterterrorism operations."

Sheikdom shakedown: Dubai moves on Nasdaq Arab ownership of U.S. stock exchange raises flag in Congress
In a complex set of transactions, Dubai is moving to acquire 19.9
percent of the Nasdaq in New York, placing the Arab government in an
ownership position of the key U.S. stock exchange and raising concerns
in Congress.
As
a result of the transaction, Dubai also will acquire 28 percent of the
London Stock Exchange, one of the oldest and largest in the world.
The transaction is being made through Borse Dubai, a holding company 100-percent owned by the government of the Emirate of Dubai and controlled by Mohammed bin Rashid al-Maktoum, the head of the Dubai ruling family.
According
to its website, Borse Dubai was created Aug. 6 as the holding company
for Dubai Financial Market and Dubai International Financial Exchange
in a move to consolidate the Dubai government's two stock exchanges "as
well as current investments in other exchanges, expanding Dubai's
position as a global capital market hub."
The
announcement set off a firestorm of criticism in Washington, prompting
President Bush to comment today in a news conference, "We're going to
take a good look at it, as to whether or not it has any national
security implications involved in the transaction. I'm comfortable with
the process to go forward."

LSE faces fresh bidding war
By Norma Cohen in London
Published: September 20 2007 09:11 | Last updated: September 20 2007 21:29
Nearly 50 per cent of the London Stock Exchange is now in the hands of two rival Gulf states battling to be their region's leader in the global consolidation of exchanges.
Qatar
Investment Authority and Borse Dubai now own 48 per cent of the LSE
following a complex series of deals in which ownership of Europe's
exchanges is being realigned.
Borse Dubai secured 28 per cent of the LSE as part of a wider deal with the US-based Nasdaq designed to settle their long-running battle for control of the Nordic exchanges and technology operator OMX.
The Dubai group bought most of Nasdaq's 31 per cent stake in the LSE
for £14.40 a share in cash. In return, it will take a 19.9 per cent
stake in the combined Nasdaq/OMX group and receive cash.
However,
the move enraged the Qatar Investment Authority, which until Tuesday
night believed it was close to clinching a deal to buy much of the LSE
stake for itself.

Carlyle sells stake to Abu Dhabi
By James Politi in New York
Published: September 20 2007 19:41 | Last updated: September 20 2007 19:41
Carlyle
agreed on Thursday to sell a 7.5 per cent stake in itself to an arm of
Abu Dhabi's government - the latest US private equity group to bring in
a sovereign wealth fund as a big investor.
Blackstone sold a near
10 per cent stake in its management company to the Chinese government
in May. A different arm of the Abu Dhabi government bought a stake in
Apollo Management in July. Selling stakes to international sovereign
wealth funds has become a popular way for US buy-out groups to cash in
on their booming businesses while expanding their influence in new
markets. The Carlyle deal demonstrates that the credit squeeze has not
halted such transactions.
Mubadala,
the arm of Abu Dhabi which has invested in sectors as diverse as Libyan
oil exploration and Ferrari, the Italian motor company, is paying
$1.35bn for the Carlyle stake.
The deal was struck at a 10 per
cent discount to a valuation of $20bn for all of Carlyle. The
Washington-based buy-out group agreed to guarantee a floor to
Mubadala's investment, pledging to compensate the arm of the oil-rich
emirate if Carlyle goes public and the share price drops.

ANY QUESTIONS AS TO THE FUTURE WITH OIL > $82/barrel?
Mahmoud
Ahmadinejad, president of Iran, has accepted an invitation to speak at
Columbia from School of International and Public Affairs interim dean
John Coatsworth, according to a spokesman.
The event is
scheduled to take place on Monday, September 24--the same day that
Ahmadinejad is scheduled to address the UN General Assembly--as part of
the World Leaders Forum and will be sponsored by SIPA.
"Necessarily,
on occasion this will bring us into contact with beliefs many, most, or
even all of us will find offensive and even odious," University
President Lee Bollinger said in a statement. "We trust our community,
including our students, to be fully capable of dealing with these
occasions, through the powers of dialogue and reason."
"Opportunities
to hear, challenge, and learn from controversial speakers of different
views are central to the education and training of students for
citizenship in a shrinking and still dangerous world. This is
especially true for SIPA students, many of whose careers will require
them to confront human rights and security issues throughout the
globe," Coatsworth said in a statement.
I'm looking for a parallel analogy for the west with Iran, but you know, we just don't have one. The foreign minister of Iran sits with David Duke at a Holocaust Denial conference with banality, and what can I conjure up to compare with such a thing?
This is not a freedom of speech, or an academic freedom to inquire issue any more than it would be if we have David Duke there to examine why blacks are inferior and jews back them up, and in doing so control the world by proxy.
That has no cachet.
And let's be clear that THIS is what we are talking about. This is Leonard Bernstein inviting the Black Panthers to the cocktail party on crack. He will want the same thing from you at the end of the day as he does now.
Why not invite a chief theoretician for the salafi freaks? That WOULD make sense.
THEN invite Mesbah Yazdi or Jannatti to examine the effect on western civilization of a messianic religious superiority cult in charge of nuclear weapons and its strategic meanings?
Instead, invited by the ill advised, misinformed, cloistered morons we have the living combination of David Irving, David Duke and Hermann Goebbels, appointed by limited choice in elections, via those who accept the idea that if Armageddon occurs, the perfect being, the new mahdi will arrive in Qom via a well to lead us all to paradise on earth?
The only thing we can discover from Mahmoud Achmadinejad at this point are more reasons to ensure that the hojatieh led mullocracy must GO. Will those who count this man accepting an invitation as a bonus turn into the insistent version of Tim Russert when he speaks? Will they tolerate such a questioner?
Or will they have tasers ready?
Will a student be able to ask about this:
Ahmadinejad described the Holocaust as a "myth" that has been used
to impose the state of Israel on the Arab world and called for Israel
to be wiped off the map.
"Ahmadinejad's Holocaust comment opened a new window in
international relations on this issue. Twenty years ago, it was not
possible to talk about [the] Holocaust and any scientific study was
subject to punishment. This taboo has been broken, thanks to Mr.
Ahmadinejad's initiative," Georges Theil of France told conference
delegates on Tuesday.
Theil was convicted in France for "contesting the
truth of crimes against humanity" after he said the Nazis never used
poison gas against Jews.

U.S. Congressman and Presidential Candidate Dennis Kucinich: The U.S. Must Pay Reparations to the People of Iraq
WORSE IN BLACK AND WHITE THAN THE ORIGINAL STORY
"It was a meeting where President Assad showed a real desire to play a role in helping to create a peaceful settlement of the conditions in Iraq, as well as a grander approach towards creating peace. So it was a very important meeting, and I felt honored to have the chance to speak with him."
We need to see that there is honest reconstruction in Iraq, no Halliburton dishonest cheating of the people of Iraq and the people of the United States – the taxpayers.
The truth is that we have to reach out to the world to get help
The fact of the matter is we are all being weakened by continuing a war that's based on a lie
It is an extraordinary gesture on the part of the Syrian government that they would provide an opportunity for people to save their lives. And so this is something that I think needs to be recognized. And it also shows that here is a man, President Assad, who should be respected and appreciated for the role that he has played.
We also must pay reparations to the people of Iraq

GERTZ - WASHINGTON — The U.S. intelligence community has determined that Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps has been working with Al Qaida leaders in Iran to plan attacks against the United States.
They said that from virtual house arrest in 2004, Iran has enabled the son of Al Qaida chief Osama Bin Laden and other top agents to plan operations and policy.
"Al Qaida's leadership has been coopted by Iran and constitutes an option for a major strike either in the Middle East or even the United States," an official said. "We always suspected some Al Qaida cooperation with Iran, but this is bigger than ever."
Officials said Al Qaida's leadership council, led by Saad Bin Laden, the son of the movement's founder, convenes nearly monthly in Iran. They said senior operatives arrive for meetings from Afghanistan and Pakistan as Teheran supplies Al Qaida with weapons and facilitates the flow of operatives to neighboring Iraq.
DUH, gee, I was told they hated each other and would never work together.
Iran enabling, funding Al Qaida movement despite religious differences
Or,..... and the sun is coming up tomorrow..hello...they have THE SAME ENEMIES AND PREJUDICES, and ALMOST IDENTICAL GOALS
GERTZ:Western intelligence officials believe that Iran has become a major force behind Al Qaida. Despite the religious gulf, Shi'ite Iran has been enabling Al Qaida, a Sunni movement, to operate from Iran and Iraq for attacks against the West. Officials said Al Qaida was using Iran as a base for communications, logistics and operations.
"The top people in Al Qaida are now in Iran," a Western intelligence source said. "They have access to money and communications and most importantly a safe haven."
Iran hosts two groups of Al Qaida leaders. One is a group of high-level operatives from Saudi Arabia who escaped into Iran from Afghanistan during the U.S. invasion in 2001. Another group include members of the Al Qaida and Taliban leadership native to Afghanistan and Pakistan.
The Pushtun are the enemy of the people of the USA.
Pro-Pakistan tribal leader 'would shelter Bin Laden'
WANA, Pakistan (AFP) - A pro-government tribal leader hailed by Pakistan for expelling foreign militants from a troubled frontier region said Friday he would protect Osama bin Laden if he sought shelter with him.
Mullah Mohammad Nazir told a rare press conference in Wana, the main town in South Waziristan tribal district, that he had never met the Al-Qaeda chief but would help him in line with local traditions.
"Bin Laden has never come to this area but if he comes here and seeks our protection then according to tribal laws and customs we will protect him," the 32-year-old former Taliban commander said.
"Our traditions and customs demand that we support the oppressed," added Nazir, who was flanked by heavily-armed gunmen.
Also that all jews should die and Crusaders along with them, probably even if you pay the tax. So sorry.
Times UK - Hardliners in the Iranian regime have warned that the seizure of British naval personnel demonstrates that they can make trouble for the West whenever they want to and do so with impunity.
The bullish reaction from Teheran will reinforce the fears of western diplomats and military officials that more kidnap attempts may be planned.
The British handling of the crisis has been regarded with some concern in Washington, and a Pentagon defence official told The Sunday Telegraph: "The fear now is that this could be the first of many. If the Brits don't change their rules of engagement, the Iranians could take more hostages almost at will.
"Iran has come out of this looking reasonable. If I were the Iranians, I would keep playing the same game. They have very successfully muddied the waters and bought themselves some more time. And in parts of the Middle East they will be seen as the good guys. They could do it time and again if they wanted to."
How stupid are we.....
Americans also expressed dismay that the British had suspended boarding operations in the Gulf while its tactics are reassessed. "Iran has got what it wants. They have secured free passage for smuggling weapons into Iraq without a fight," one US defence department official said.
Lorenzo Vidino is an analyst at the Investigative Project and the Jebsen Center at Tufts University's Fletcher School of Law and Diplomacy. He is the author of the book ``Al Qaeda in Europe."
Over the last few weeks Dutch media have published information gleaned from Dutch intelligence files regarding the Muslim Brotherhood. One report indicated that Samir Azzouz and Noureddine el Fatmi, two top members of the Hofstad group (and, later, of the so-called “Piranha network”) had had close financial dealings with members of the Brotherhood based in the Netherlands. Another indicated that the Brotherhood, through the European Trust (its powerful financial arm in Europe), controlled two of the country’s largest mosques.
The lively discussion taking place both in the Dutch parliament and in the media as a consequence of these revelations resembles very closely the debate that is taking place on this side of the pond at various levels (and on this site). I have published an article in the latest issue of Opinio, a Dutch weekly, regarding the issue. While the article is in Dutch, below is the translation:
Recent media reports revealed that the Muslim Brotherhood, the oldest and most influential of all militant Islamist groups, has gained a foothold in the Netherlands, quietly placing itself behind two of the country’s largest and important mosques (de Rotterdamse Essalammoskee en de Westermoskee in Amsterdam-West).
Oh, and for thsoe of you who favor meeting and greeting these middle east folks, so we can all do the Rodgers and Hammerstein 'Getting to know you' polka,
The truth is that, despite its recent claims of moderation, the Brotherhood still adopts the same radical agenda that has characterized it for the last 80 years. In a December 2005 interview to the London-based Arabic newspaper Asharq Al-Awsat, Mohammed Akef, the group’s official supreme guide clearly stated that “the Muslim Brotherhood is a global movement whose members cooperate with each other throughout the world, based on the same religious worldview - the spread of Islam, until it rules the world.” On the Brotherhood’s website Akef also tellingly said: "I have complete faith that Islam will invade Europe and America, because Islam has logic and a mission.”
WASHINGTON Bill Gertz — Despite repeated appeals Syria remains the primary gateway of Al Qaida operatives to Iraq. The Defense Department said Damascus has played a significant role in the Sunni insurgency in Iraq. A Pentagon report said Syria served as a base for loyalists of the late President Saddam Hussein to plan and finance attacks against the U.S.-led coalition in Iraq. "Although Iraq resumed diplomatic relations with Syria in November 2006, Damascus appears unwilling to cooperate fully with the government of Iraq on bilateral security initiatives," the report states. "Syria continues to provide safe haven, border transit and limited logistical support to some Iraqi insurgents, especially former Saddam-era Iraqi Ba'ath Party elements." The report, "Measuring Stability and Security in Iraq," was issued March 14 as the State Department resumed high-level talks with Syria. The State Department has sought Syrian cooperation in the resettlement of millions of Iraqis who have fled their homeland since 2003.
I'm not sure which is more apt for this piece of monumentally galactically moronic foreign relations, the horses ass, or Claude Rains, shocked.
Here's something Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice would prefer that Americans not know as she tours the Middle East to promote Arab support for the pro-Western government in Iraq.
Palestinians connected or sponsored by Palestinian factions in the Gaza Strip are playing major roles in the Sunni insurgency in Iraq.
So, while Rice has been urging Congress to release money to the Hamas-led Palestinian Authority and promise the establishment of a Palestinian state, members of that movement have been facilitating the killing of Americans and Iraqis in suicide bombings in Baghdad. These Palestinians, themselves, are financed by Saudi Arabia and other so-called U.S. allies in the Gulf region.
Take Mahmoud Hamed Kamal Al Mathi, a Palestinian identified as the financier of the Al Qaida network. Al Mathi, also known as Abu Qatada the Palestinian, was captured by Iraqi troops on March 17 in central Baghdad.
WC of the Gathering Storm posts an interesting complaint from the Germans about what they clearly feel is america's self goal, which to put it mildly might be called the clash of the KULTURES. That is represented by the following pic in comments.
It's a nice compendium for a smear, but in accuracy we have very poor propaganda.
What it basically and desperately says is this:
If the enemy of the USA cannot be dealt with otherwise (as americans claim) then the entire underpinning idea set of the left is wrong.
That's why the euros are so vehement and desparate. With the Pershing missile they were all exposed, now they really think that ABu Ghraib is their moment to drag us into their moral swamp.
Egyptian Press Criticizes the Muslim Brotherhood's Infiltration of Egypt's Education System
Recent investigative articles in the Egyptian press have exposed the infiltration of Muslim Brotherhood elements into the country's education system, and have shown how they are directly influencing school curricula. Coptic Christian columnist Sameh Fawzi has written several articles criticizing these curricula, saying that they distort the pupils' perception of history, disregard the role of Christian (i.e. Coptic) Egyptians, and encourage religious intolerance.
The following are excerpts from Fawzi's articles and from one of the investigative pieces.
"the mosque has been transformed from a place of worship… into a venue for recruitment and training for war."
Arab states trained Al-Qaeda men to fight in Somalia
MIDDLE EASTERN countries secretly armed and supported suspected Al-Qaeda recruits in the failed state of Somalia in a direct challenge to western interests in east Africa, according to a United Nations report.
Hundreds of Islamist fighters were flown, with Eritrean assistance, from Somalia to Syria and Libya for military training. Others were taken to Lebanon to fight with Hezbollah, the report to the UN security council has revealed.
UN investigators also detailed military aid given to the Islamists by Saudi Arabia and Egypt, Arab states friendly to the West. Iran also supplied 125 shoulder-fired surface-to-air missiles, 80 of which arrived by sea in dhows and the rest by air.
A clandestine operation to smuggle the fighters out of Somalia began in July last year.
Imagine my freaking surprise.
Gee, I guess someone forgot to tell them that Sunni and Shia murderers are not allowed to work together to try and kill my family. Will someone please get the message out to these poor fellows?
The new Palestinian unity government 'will not recognise Israel'
Gaza: A new Palestinian unity government to be formed after a deal in Makkah between rival Fatah and Hamas factions will not recognise Israel, a political adviser to Hamas Prime Minister Esmail Haniya said yesterday.
Ahmad Yousuf said the unity government, which he expected Haniya to unveil within 10 days, would "respect" previous Palestinian peace accords with Israel but would not be committed to them, nor to recognising the Jewish state.
Recognition of Israel is one of three conditions set by the "quartet" of international Middle East negotiators for lifting sanctions on the Hamas-led government. The quartet also demands Hamas renounce violence and accept existing peace deals.
Oh Ms. Rice, calling Ms. Rice....tell us, dear, please, are you Bakerized, or ready to dhimmize for oil? Or do you still recognize an ally, a real ally, that won't turn it's back on you when the regime changes, as it always does?
"The issue of recognition was not addressed at all [in Makkah]," Yousuf said.
"In the platform of the new government there will be no sign of recognition [of Israel], regardless of the pressures the United States and the quartet would exert."
North Korea is helping Iran to prepare an underground nuclear test similar to the one Pyongyang carried out last year.
Under the terms of a new understanding between the two countries, the North Koreans have agreed to share all the data and information they received from their successful test last October with Teheran's nuclear scientists.North Korea provoked an international outcry when it successfully fired a bomb at a secret underground location and Western intelligence officials are convinced that Iran is working on its own weapons programme.
A senior European defence official told The Daily Telegraph that North Korea had invited a team of Iranian nuclear scientists to study the results of last October's underground test to assist Teheran's preparations to conduct its own — possibly by the end of this year.
There were unconfirmed reports at the time of the Korean firing that an Iranian team was present. Iranian military advisers regularly visit North Korea to participate in missile tests.
Now the long-standing military co-operation between the countries has been extended to nuclear issues.
Isn't it sweet how friends can find each other in the dark?
Isn't it nice to find yourself defined by who your enemies truly are?
What can be so bad about us, if these guys want us vapor?
As a result, senior western military officials are deeply concerned that the North Koreans' technical superiority will allow the Iranians to accelerate development of their own nuclear weapon.
"The Iranians are working closely with the North Koreans to study the results of last year's North Korean nuclear bomb test," said the European defence official.
These Pushtun are the enemies of the people of the United States. They are not the enemies of the administration. They are not the enemies of Bush. They are not the enemies of Cheney, or the neo cons...these people attacked us here already, and supported the men who became heroes to their ideology who slaughtered and burned our people, at work, on a quiet tuesday morning.
They are the enemies of you and me, and our families.
KARACHI - Just as the Taliban move across the border between Afghanistan and Pakistan with impunity, so does the money needed to sustain the Taliban-led insurgency flow unrestricted between the countries.
In the wake of September 11, 2001, the financial squeeze instigated by the United States and its allies in the "war on terror" severely disrupted the flow of funds for al-Qaeda and the Taliban, mainly through closer international scrutiny of bank accounts.
However, as the insurgencies in Afghanistan and Iraq testify, the money has certainly not been stopped. The major reason for this is that Washington and its allies made the mistake of looking for and applying high-tech solutions.
Had the focus been more on the "unschooled wisdom" prevalent in the mountains of Afghanistan and in the deserts of Iraq, the US might not be in such a poor position as it is now.
Sorry, Syed, here is my view... the reason these people are collecting this money is not that we have and use satellites, lasers, jdams and optics. The reason these people collect the money is twofold.
They are alive.
They are collecting funds from supporters who are alive.
At the least, THEY should be dead. That they are not is a mistake in the carrying out of warfare.
PBS broadcast a special documentary on modern antisemitism, and inadvertently put on display one of the most pressing inaccuracies regarding modern antisemitism.
Add to this the NYT review of this, and holy shnikees Batman, we really have a hologram of the problem In effect, PBS and the NYT put the onus for muslim racism on christians and jews.
The Christians, according the TV narrative, invented it, and by choosing to have a nation (and self defense) after 2000 years of 'Christian' antisemitism, the jews joined this mental disease to the poor innocent muslims of the middle east.
Now admittedly, while watching this last night, and seeing the face of Mr. Judt, who in not defending Walt and Mearsheimer on TV managed to appear not off the wall, I was dismayed.
And certainly, in reading the review/preview, and seeing the dismay of the NYT at Bernard Lewis not being identified as a jew who pushed Cheney to invade Iraq (which somehow is also responsible for more antisemitism foisted on more innocent arabs by american jew duped WASP's, I assume to protect the state there as a result of prior christian antisemitism), one looks and one sees the complete elite progressive, theoretically, I suppose, harmless racism of the Margaux and Volvo hands off superior, 'we know better', insufferables.
However, while agreeing with some of the items presented as facts last night, I have a far different take on modern antisemitism.
So we know the Russians are not stupid, but how much are they being paid to look craven?
The UN Security Council, a contemptible lunch club, no doubt missing the Rainbow Room far more than Bill Clinton, is ready to take the horrifically frightening steps of freezing the assets of a few Iranian companies which have assets in foreign banks and work in the nuke program, and ban the travel of 12 Iranians also working in the nuclear program ... and Russia won't allow that, wanting the travel ban watered down to to keeping a list of when these 12 people travel.
And the tough diplomats, breaking between Bally workouts and pastrami fressers on Rye sent in from the Carnegie deli cave in and decide to keep a list ...ooooooooooooooooo...I'm sure Mesbah Yazdi and Ahmadi-nezhad has drawn the correct conclusion from that.
So far, Bush has refrained from appointing anyone to replace Bolton, and it's no longer even mentioned in the press. I hope it stays like that. Let's just stop sending checks.
In a concession to Russia on Wednesday, the Europeans deleted a mandatory travel ban and instead told nations to notify a Security Council sanctions panel should any of 12 Iranians involved in the country's nuclear programs visit their countries. Their names are on a list attached to the resolution.
In the same day Kofi inveighs against unilateral actions ....UN report: Syria continues to smuggle weapons to Hizbullah
WASHINGTON — The United Nations has reported continued arms smuggling from Syria to Lebanon.
A UN report cited at least 13 incidents of weapons smuggling to Hizbullah in violation of a Security Council resolution. The report said the Lebanese army has failed to stop smuggling along the Syrian border.
The incidents included the smuggling of 17 Katyusha-class rockets and improvised explosive devices in southern Lebanon. In another incident, the Lebanese army found seven missiles, three rocket launchers and substantial amounts of ammunition.
"It is plain that there is a need for bilateral assistance to the government to enhance its border security capabilities," UN Secretary-General Kofi Annan said in the Dec. 1 report.
Israel's military has reported that Hizbullah has replenished its weapons arsenal following the war of August 2006.
Military intelligence has concluded that Iran and Syria have replaced or enhanced Hizbullah missile and rocket arsenal in Lebanon.
"Weapons are still flowing to Hizbullah, and the embargo has not been properly implemented," Israeli Chief of Staff Lt. Gen. Dan Halutz said on Nov. 28.
We started it to get rid of a terror leaning, weapons loving, fascist, america hating son of a bitch whom the president judged (rightly or wrongly) to be not worth taking a chance over on the safety of the american people.
We completed this phase in a few weeks, and then were left with a conquering force right sized, and a garrison force about 20-25% of what was required. We set loose the ancient war of Ali and 700 AD, versus the converted tribe of power in the hijaz of pre Muhammad times.
We succeeded in a few weeks.
We also failed to comprehend the ragnorokian forces of entropy coiled tighter every day since Ali and Husayn died/were treacherously killed.
That is the responsibility of the Bush admin.
Jim Baker has also FAILED to grasp the elementary.
If the members of the ISG:
James A. Baker, III, and Lee H. Hamilton, Co-Chairs, Lawrence S. Eagleburger, Vernon E. Jordan, Jr., Edwin Meese III, Sandra Day O’Connor, Leon E. Panetta, William J. Perry, Charles S. Robb, Alan K. Simpson are so naieve that they believe not only that Israel can make peace with HAMAS, but also that this will fix the problems in Najaf and Ramadi, and Sadr City, then The Wise Men of our day are fools.
Some of them should have learned this lesson of Israel being a distraction and canard - for their ignorance of that force which grew from the 1979 Russian invasion of Afghanistan onwards, while they guarded the realm.. had nothing to do with Israel and everything to do with the 'unbelievers' everywhere.
These people, who certainly know better, include every name on this list except for Mrs. O'Connor. They might have been able to claim ignorance the first time around, but the forces of salafist and khomeinist aggression are no strangers on the world stage now, and have little to do with Israel. I have lost much respect for every single name on that list.
But of course we all know wordlessly, the reason for the ISG. It was to give cover to republicans and democrats for treacherously leaving Iraq, and giving up, and making it easier to garner votes in the short term of those in office (of both parties).
Bernard Lewis:"America is harmless as an enemy and treacherous as a friend."
If we want to "win" we need to pick a side. Sunni or Shia. Who has more 'right' on their side?
Will that be cod liver oil or milk of magnesia, sir?
Are you kidding me?
Is there a single person anywhere who bats an eye at this? Why are we bothering sending money to these freaks? What if we don't? Maybe they will hate us? Oh no !!
Yemen has been taking hundreds of millions of dollars from the United States to help fight Al Qaida while also maintaining laboratories of jihad to generate new cadres of Al Qaida operatives.
Consider Al-Iman University, established in 1993. Western intelligence sources regard the university as a conduit for Al Qaida and even containing a military wing. In October 23 people, including four Europeans and three Australians, were arrested for links to Al Qaida. All of them were students at Al Iman.
Al Iman President Abdul Majid Al Zindani defended his institution, which has nearly 5,000 students. Al Zindani has been designated a "global terrorist" by both the United States and United Nations.
Hey, just like Lawrence Summers, right?
President Ali Abdullah Saleh has not attempted to close down Al Iman, largely financed by Saudi Arabia, which blocks foreign scrutiny. Indeed, Saleh praised the university during a visit on Nov. 12. The president has served as a keynote speaker at the university's graduation ceremony.
Sources said Al Iman seeks to appeal to the Western jihadist. John Walker Lindh, a U.S. citizen, studied at Al Iman before he left for Pakistan and Afghanistan, where he joined Taliban.
Now.... let's go to the wayback machine, Sherman...
VIENNA — A document obtained by Iran on the nuclear black market serves no other purpose than to make an atomic bomb, the International Atomic Energy Agency said Tuesday.
The finding was made in a report prepared for presentation to the 35-nation IAEA board when it meets, starting Thursday, on whether to refer Iran to the U.N. Security Council, which has the power to impose economic and political sanctions on Iran.
The report was made available in full to The Associated Press.
First mention of the documents was made late last year in a longer IAEA report. At that time, the agency said only that the papers showed how to cast "enriched, natural and depleted uranium metal into hemispherical forms."
The agency refused to make a judgment on what possible uses such casts would have.
But diplomats familiar with the probe into Iran's nuclear program said then that the papers apparently were instructions on how to mold highly enriched grade uranium into the core of warheads.
In the brief report obtained Tuesday, however, the agency said bluntly that the 15-page document showing how to cast fissile uranium into metal was "related to the fabrication of nuclear weapon components."
Must be a mistake. Maybe there is a peaceful use for shaping plutonium and uranium? We have to find another reason or it will be hard to rationalize avoiding this and thinking about other things.
Boston -2 local imams arrested in alleged visa scheme
Now why would they do that?
By Yvonne Abraham and Raja Mishra, Globe Staff | November 16, 2006
Federal immigration agents arrested imams from two Boston-area mosques yesterday on charges they were involved in a scheme that provided religious worker visas to immigrants who used them to enter the United States and work instead as gas station attendants, truck drivers, and factory laborers. Hafiz Abdul Hannan , imam , or leader, of the Islamic Society of Greater Lowell in Chelmsford, and Muhammed Masood , imam of the Islamic Center of New England in Sharon, were among 33 people taken into custody nationwide after a multi-year investigation led by agents in Boston and New York, said Paula Grenier , a spokeswoman for US Immigration and Customs Enforcement.
"This was a nationwide religious worker visa fraud scheme designed to help illegal aliens," said Grenier. "These people had to be solely engaged in religious employment, and in many cases were not."
Under the Religious Worker Program, started in 1990, churches, synagogues, and mosques can ask the government to approve visas for foreigners to fill vacant positions. Several thousand visas are issued each year that permit immigrants to enter the United States exclusively for religious employment. To obtain the visa, immigrants must have religious training and experience in their native country. Once here, they are not allowed to hold secular jobs. The religious worker permits can ultimately lead to green cards, or permanent residency.
Under the scheme, described by federal authorities yesterday, the immigrants, who were mostly Pakistani, paid a fee to US religious organizations, which then sponsored them for the visas. Federal immigration officials believe that abuse of the program is widespread: an August 2005 audit found signs of fraud in more than 30 percent of applications.
Some of those arrested did legitimate religious work, but had filed false paperwork to win their own visas, or once here, to sponsor others, said Grenier. Because the investigation is ongoing, she would not say whether the imams are alleged to have sponsored the visas for others or violated their own visas by working secular jobs.
Wow, what next? 'Radical imams quoting Muhammad and Qutb incite young muslims on fridays?'
In an article in the Saudi daily Al-Riyadh, columnist Fares bin Hazam reports that both preachers in mosques and online propaganda are inciting young Muslims to wage jihad. [1] An interview with a young Muslim who went to fight in Afghanistan, also in Al-Riyadh, provides first-hand testimony confirming this claim.
The following are excerpts from the article and the interview:
Saudi Columnist: Preachers in Mosques Urge Worshipers to Join the Jihad in Iraq and Afghanistan
Bin Hazam writes in his article: "The business with Afghanistan will never end as long as the 'duty of jihad' continues to live in [our] society, in mosques, in Friday [sermons], and on the Internet...
"After the fall of the Taliban and the subsequent Guantanamo crisis... there was increasing talk about the need to investigate our youth's growing [inclination] towards jihad, and about the need to search for the reasons that motivate them to go to Afghanistan and to other countries...
"The call to investigate these reasons is despicable; it is a tasteless joke. [One might think] that the reasons are unknown, that we are not aware of our situation [and need to conduct an] investigation in order to discover why [our young people] went forth and are still going forth [to wage jihad]... The reasons are obvious. Many of us know them, and there is no need for a scientific study or for any other [kind of study] to reveal them...
"Since the causes are known, do we lack courage to deal with [this problem]? [I believe that] we do. Our lack of courage has been apparent ever since we invented the excuse of 'external [influences],' and began to toy with it and wave it at every opportunity. I do not know where these [external influences] come from, since it was we who sent our young men [to Afghanistan] in the first place, before we ever heard of [these influences] that allegedly come [from outside].
"Some preachers, [namely] those who fear the censor, deceive him by being implicit in their incitement to [wage] jihad in Iraq or Afghanistan. They speak in their sermons about the merits of jihad without mentioning a particular region. They speak in general terms that can be applied to any location, even to our [own] country. During the prayer, the details start to pour in thick and fast: first, [a call to wage jihad] in Palestine, [which serve as] a smokescreen, and then [calls for jihad] in Afghanistan, Iraq and Chechnya, and finally... the call 'oh Allah, grant them victory everywhere!' 'Everywhere' includes our [own] country... and we say 'amen' after the preacher calls [upon Allah] to help the mujahideen in our [own] country..."

In the vision of certain members of the press, Israel is a colonialist mass murderer, and the word terrorist does not exist without quotation marks surrounding it. Israelis are aggressors. Islamist terrorists, be they Palestinians or Iranian backed Hezb’allah, are victims. These media types come to the Middle East with their narrative firmly in place. It is so because they believe it to be so.
I was an eyewitness to a classic example of this in Jenin, in 2002. Western journalists and United Nation envoys were in an uproar over an alleged Israeli massacre of a thousand Palestinians. There were grisly, supposed eyewitness, accounts of Israeli bulldozers shoveling hundreds of corpses of helpless Palestinian refugees into mass graves. There were stories of Israeli soldiers murdering Palestinian children in front of their parents and then throwing their bodies into wells and sewage pits.
Comparisons were made to ethnic cleansing in the Balkans, to Nazi war crimes and the term genocide was spoken with righteous indignation. The truth turned out to be somewhat less Baroque. There was a battle not a massacre.
In that battle some fifty Palestinian combatants were killed, as were twenty three Israeli soldiers. The battle was a ferocious one and in the Arab press there were glowing tales of the fifty Palestinian fighters who fell in glorious combat against the Zionist enemy they valiantly slaughtered. But to the majority of Western journalists the facts became a footnote on the inside pages, reported weeks after the front page banner line headlines screamed about the supposed massacre.
Early this spring, when I reported from Afghan farms about this year's bumper opium crop, people thought I was using that opium. Now it is common knowledge that the opium trade is fueling a Taliban comeback. Mark this on your calendar: Spring of 2007 will be a bloodbath in Afghanistan for NATO forces. Our British, Canadian, Australian, Dutch, and other allies will be slaughtered in Afghanistan if they dare step off base in the southern provinces, and nobody is screaming at the tops of their media-lungs about the impending disaster. I would not be surprised to see a NATO base overrun in Afghanistan in 2007 with all the soldiers killed or captured. And when it happens, how many will claim they had no idea it was so bad and blame the media for failing to raise the alarm? Here it is: WARNING! Troops in Afghanistan are facing slaughter in 2007!
Israel Finds 39 Russian-Made Missiles in Hezbollah Hides
Military sources said the Israel Army has collected 39 Russian-origin anti-tank missiles from Hezbollah outposts in southern Lebanon, the World Tribune has reported. They said the missiles included the AT-14 Kornet and the AT-13 Metis.
“Some of the missiles were still in their original packaging, which identified them as having been manufactured in Russia,” a military source said.
The sources said photographs of the missiles were delivered to Russia in September as evidence that weapons exported by Moscow ended up with Hezbollah. They said the Kornets were exported to Syria in 2002.
“The [Israel] army also found bills of lading and serial numbers with the missiles,” the source said. “It is probable that some of these missiles that were ordered by Iran for Hezbollah via Syria.”
The Hezbollah acquisition of Russian-origin missiles was discussed during the visit by Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Olmert to Moscow. On Wednesday, Putin met Russian President Vladimir Putin in a discussion said to have focused on Iran’s nuclear program.
* Say no ‘infidels’ in Afghanistan, everyone there is Muslim
* Allege some clerics acting as middlemen for Taliban recruiters
BARMAL: Handcuffed and weary, three self-confessed Taliban fighters revealed this week how they had crossed into Afghanistan from Pakistan to carry out “jihad” against coalition troops there after clerics in Pakistan told them that they were duty-bound as Muslims to do so.
The young men - two Pakistanis and an Afghan - were captured on Tuesday after a fierce five-hour gunbattle in Afghanistan’s Paktika province, just a few kilometres from the Afghan-Pak border. During the battle, 24 of their fellow fighters were killed, with the Afghan army later showing their bloodied and broken bodies to reporters at an army base in Barmal district.
The dead were mostly Afghans but also included Pakistanis, Chechens, Turks, one Arab and one Yemenite, an Afghan officer said, citing information from the three detained fighters, as well as captured identity cards and, in one case, a name on a bullet belt.
“Mullahs in Pakistan were preaching to us that we are obliged to fight jihad in Afghanistan because there are foreign troops - there is an Angriz (British) invasion,” Alahuddin, one of the captured men, told reporters.
A new U.S. draft Security Council resolution circulated Thursday night would authorize only non-military sanctions against North Korea and require a new U.N. resolution for any further action, a key demand of China.
The draft, obtained by The Associated Press would only allow non-military sanctions such as economic penalties, breaking diplomatic relations or banning air travel.
It also eliminates a previously proposed blanket arms embargo. And it urges North Korea to speedily implement a September 2005 agreement in which it pledged to give up its nuclear program in exchange for aid and security guarantees.

Pakistan President Pervez Musharraf risks a collapse of his regime when he returns to Islamabad after his high-profile visit to the White House. Musharraf faces an Al Qaida-aligned intelligence and military that has decided to bolster Osama Bin Laden during the president's tour of the United States and other allies.
Western intelligence sources said Musharraf has already accepted the dictates of the jihad clique in Islamabad. They said the president was forced to accept a government decision to cede authority over North Waziristan, the mountainous tribal region along the Afghan border, to Al Qaida and Taliban.
The Pakistani decision marked Musharraf's surrender to the group of military officers that controls the nation's army and intelligence community.
Musharraf also looked on helplessly as Pakistan released more than 150 Al Qaida-aligned prisoners in a decision led by the Inter-Services Intelligence.
The two Pittsfield Township men whose homes were raided by federal agents in a criminal investigation involving a Southfield-based Islamic charity have ended their affiliations with a group that is planning to build a new mosque in the Ann Arbor-Ypsilanti area. Khalil Jassemm was president and Mujahid Al-Fayadh was a fundraiser and project manager for the Hidaya Community Center. They both resigned and Walayat Khan took over as acting president, Khan said Monday. He said Jassemm and Al-Fayadh resigned Sunday in "a mutual decision'' with the board.
Khan said Jassemm said he didn't want to be president "until his name is cleared by the FBI.'' He said Al-Fayadh had only worked with the Hidaya Community Center for two months.
Jassemm confirmed this morning he did resign but declined further comment. Al-Fayadh couldn't be reached for comment. Al-Fayadh, when contacted at his home last Saturday about his involvement in the charity, had referred all questions to his lawyer.
Islamophobia?
Jassemm is chief executive officer and Al-Fayadh is founder and a board member of the Life For Relief and Development charity. Agents seized $134,000 cash, including $76,568 found in a Meijer shopping bag, in Al-Fayadh's home according to the court filings obtained by a Detroit newspaper. They also seized Iraqi military decorations, a computer, photographs, videotapes and fundraising brochures.
The FBI has said only that warrants were executed as part of a criminal investigation. No one has been arrested or charged.
Anjem Choudary said those who insulted Islam would be "subject to capital punishment"
His remarks came during a protest outside Westminster Cathedral on a day that worldwide anger among Muslim hardliners towards Pope Benedict XVI appeared to deepen.
The pontiff yesterday apologised for causing offence during a lecture last week. Quoting a medieval emperor, his words were taken to mean that he called the prophet Mohammed "evil and inhuman".
He insisted he was "deeply sorry" but his humbling words did not go far enough to silence all his critics or quell the violence and anger he has triggered.
A nun was shot dead in Somalia by Islamic gunmen and churches came under attack in Palestine.
Choudary's appeal for the death of Pope Benedict was the second time he has been linked with apparent incitement to murder within a year.
The 39-year-old lawyer
organised demonstrations against the publication of cartoons of Mohammed in February in Denmark. Protesters carried placards declaring "Behead Those Who Insult Islam".
Yesterday he said: "The Muslims take their religion very seriously and non-Muslims must appreciate that and that must also understand that there may be serious consequences if you insult Islam and the prophet.
"Whoever insults the message of Mohammed is going to be subject to capital punishment."
He added: "I am here have a peaceful demonstration. But there may be people in Italy or other parts of the world who would carry that out.
"I think that warning needs to be understood by all people who want to insult Islam and want to insult the prophet of Islam."
As well as placards attacking the Pope such as "Pope go to Hell", his followers outside the country's principal Roman Catholic church also waved slogans aimed at offending the sentiments of Christians such as "Jesus is the slave of Allah".
A Scotland Yard spokesman said of his comments: "We have had no complaints about this. There were around 100 people at the demonstration. It passed off peacefully and there were no arrests."
Larger Islamic groups in Britain said they accepted the Pope's apology. Inayat Bunglawala of the Muslim Council of Britain said: "The Vatican has moved quickly to deal with the hurt and we accept that.
Maybe we should establish an equilibrium here...for the insult of shooting an old lady who happens to be a nun in the back four times, catholics get to drag 10 imams around the streets naked. 8 Sunnis and 2 shias.
In fact I propose this as an interfaith manner to avoid unpredictable violence, by substituting blood and ignominy in predictable pre settled fashion.
A congressional report has found that the U.S. intelligence community, led by the CIA, has been unable to determine Iran's advance toward nuclear weapons. The House report said that despite three years of effort, the U.S. intelligence shortfall has hampered decisions by the Bush administration.
Well, let's just look at the historical record for a gross idea....
The US - from refining to weapon 1944-1945 -10 months in complete secrecy
The Brits on their own with the Tube Alloy project - 3 years
The French 1965 - five years
The Russkis 1949 - 3 years (we said 10-15), and then a thermonuclear weapon in 5
The Israelis - no idea
The Pakistanis in absolute secrecy - 5 years to a STOCKPILE of weapons, we don't know when they considered themselves to have a useful weapon, maybe as little as 3.
India - 5 years MAX in absolute secrecy
N Korea from cheating against Clinton to their announcement ~6 years, but who knows ..all we know is when they publicly gave us the finger.....
That's an average of three years, over 54 years. How about saving several billion dollars and declaring that unless there is evidence to the contrary Iran will have a useable stockpile in about three years, AT WORST...are they slower than the Israelis? Any takers? Those in charge of planning for our security in medium-long term intelligence are guilty of the grossest kind of failure, and should be replaced without delay or comment. Failure to do so means the admininstration is guilty of this failure as well, and should face public disclipline in November. There is NO alternative
More on this absolutely non survival result for the USA....
UNITED NATIONS, Sept. 1 (UPI) -- The International Atomic Energy Agency told the U.N. Security Council its inspectors have found new traces of enriched uranium in Iran.
The discovery marked the third instance that highly enriched uranium was found at an Iranian facility, but the IAEA said the nuclear fingerprint on the new discovery does not match that found on earlier samples, which the agency had concluded came from contaminated (illegally purchased) equipment from Pakistan, The New York Times reported Friday.
Gee imagine my shock !
But why bother with all this since:
1) The UN Security Council will find a veto by Russia, China or France or
2) Pass a meaningless resolution and send a mean letter
3) A group of allies will enact sanctions which will prevent Ahmedinjad and other pious armageddon seekers from vacationing on Rodeo Drive with the little women covered in black, which Germany and France will cheat on and Russia nd China will happily ignore
4) Nothing on this planet will dissuade, disturb, dismiss or deter the Iranians from their national mission of pride, destruction, and genocide in the name of the Quran, except force of arms....

Five gunmen shot dead an alleged collaborator in front of hundreds of people in a public square in the Jenin refugee camp on Sunday, accusing him of giving information to Israeli authorities, witnesses said.
The gunmen, who identified themselves as members of Islamic Jihad, accused the victim of helping Israel killed two terrorists last week in a targeted attack, said witnesses and Islamic Jihad members.
Sunday's killing came in response to a helicopter attack on the homes of the two last Wednesday, said an Islamic Jihad official.
The victim was identified as Bassem Malah, 22, who worked in Umm el-Fahm. He was due to be married next week.
Islamic Jihad said he also worked for the Israeli security services.
About 500 people were in the square when the unmasked gunmen fired into Malah's chest. Some were chanting "Allahu akhbar" and anti-Israel slogans, witnesses said.
After the killing, some bystanders put shoes on the head of the corpse, as a sign of disgrace, they said.

IRAN is seeking to import large consignments of bomb-making uranium from the African mining area that produced the Hiroshima bomb, an investigation has revealed.
A United Nations report, dated July 18, said there was “no doubt” that a huge shipment of smuggled uranium 238, uncovered by customs officials in Tanzania, was transported from the Lubumbashi mines in the Congo.
Tanzanian customs officials told The Sunday Times it was destined for the Iranian port of Bandar Abbas, and was stopped on October 22 last year during a routine check.
The disclosure will heighten western fears about the extent of Iran’s presumed nuclear weapons programme and the strategic implications of Iran’s continuing support for Hezbollah during the war with Israel.
Well, not actually since, excepting the 'wing nut neocons (who are probably 'Walt and Mearsheimer' jews anyway)' - the horror, the horror - nobody on earth wants to commit an act since commiting an act is a sign of impolitemness and poor upbringing, yielding a lack of cocktail party invites amongst those who know better and have the good Margaux and Volvos (or is it beemers, no excuse me - its Priuses).

DEATHS IN LEBANON OF U.N. OBSERVERS COULD TURN WAR
ANNAN ACCUSES ISRAEL OF DELIBERATE ATTACK
By BENNY AVNI Staff Reporter of the Sun
UNITED NATIONS — In a development that could prove a turning point in Israel’s war to rid its northern border of Hezbollah, the United Nations yesterday suffered casualties in the fighting, and Secretary-General Annan immediately accused the Israeli Defense Force of a “deliberate targeting” of four blue-helmeted U.N. observers.
Military sources said the incident occurred during an air and artillery attack near Khiyam,at the eastern region of southern Lebanon, where the IDF was preparing a large ground assault meant to create a Hezbollah-free buffer zone on the area north of Israel’s border. Four members of the United Nations’s interim force in Lebanon, identified as being from Canada, Austria, China, and Finland, were killed.
“I am shocked and deeply distressed by the apparently deliberate targeting by Israeli Defense Forces of a U.N. observer post in southern Lebanon,” Mr. Annan said yesterday in a late-night statement released in Rome, where he is attending a meeting of top players steering attempts to find solutions in the Lebanon war.
Citing no Israeli motivation for the alleged “deliberate” attack, Mr. Annan called on Israel to “conduct a full investigation.”

Interpol cites failures of Arab League states to report Al Qaida prison escapes
LONDON — Saudi Arabia failed to inform Interpol of the escape of Al Qaida insurgents.
In a statement on July 11, Interpol said Saudi authorities did not relay an alert to the world police organization on the escape of seven insurgents from a Saudi prison.
Interpol said it was the second such incident in which an Arab League state withheld information on Al Qaida.
"Most people might only be concerned that there have been two prison escapes in two different countries by a large number of suspected Al Qaida terrorists," Interpol Secretary-General Ronald Noble said in a statement.
"However, Interpol is also concerned that there apparently is no established protocol at the national level to alert the international police community that a prison break of suspected Al Qaida terrorists has occurred," he added.
The Interpol alert differed from a Saudi statement last week on the escape. Unlike Riyad, Interpol said the fugitives were "suspected Al Qaida-linked terrorists."
Interpol's command and coordination center learned of the Al Qaida escape through routine open-source monitoring, officials said. The center immediately contacted the Interpol National Central Bureau in Riyad to verify the escape and obtain information to alert member states.
Judge: 'Islamic Sharia law permits jihad against occupiers'
SAN'A, Yemen (AP) -- The trial of 19 alleged al Qaeda members had been designed to showcase how serious Yemen was in the fight against terror. But the Islamic militants, accused of plotting to assassinate Westerners and blow up a hotel frequented by Americans, were all acquitted for lack of proof, the presiding judge ruled Saturday.
Prosecutors had failed to provide "adequate evidence that the defendants were plotting attacks against foreigners or planning to assassinate Americans in Yemen," the verdict said.
Critics say the decision points to the Yemeni president's bid to win the radical Islamic vote ahead of elections in September.
Several of the defendants did confess to having been in Iraq to fight U.S. troops there and had Iraqi stamps on their passport, the court heard. "But this does not violate [Yemeni] law," the judge said.
"Islamic Sharia law permits jihad against occupiers," he said.
WASHINGTON — The Bush administration has confirmed that Saudi financiers are backing the new regime with ties to Al Qaida that has taken power in Somalia.
Officials said the so-called Islamic Courts Union, headed by an Al Qaida commander wanted by the United States, has garnered most of its foreign support from Saudi Arabia and Yemen.
"I don't want to say the Saudi government is supporting any particular [Islamic] court," Assistant Secretary of State Jendayi Frazer said. "But I do know that there is money coming in from Saudi Arabia."
Exsqueeze me? 'I don't want to say that very little at best is different today in KSA than in 2000, 1900, 1800, or 650AD, but, it seems that the salafi freaks still only want to achieve ONE THING with the money they are pumping out of the ground from the Al Saud family gas concession.' How does that sound instead?
LONDON -- Russia secretly offered to sell North Korea technology that could help the rogue state protect nuclear stockpiles and safeguard weapons secrets from international scrutiny, but officials backed off after the arms flirtation was publicized.
Oh gee, what a surprise!
Russian officials touted the equipment to the communist regime at an information technology exhibition in Pyongyang late last month -- just days before North Korea sparked international alarm by launching a salvo of short- and long-range missiles into the sea between the Korean Peninsula and Japan.
Aleksei Grigoriev, deputy director of Russia's Federal Information Technologies Agency, told a reporter for the Itar-Tass news agency that North Korea planned to buy equipment for the safe storage and transportation of nuclear materials.
