Personally, the movie struck me as a critique of counterinsurgency: the humans talked a good game about cultural understanding and minimizing civilian casualties to reassure the folks back home, but they were really just on Pandora to conquer and exploit.
Then again, it could have just been a movie about aliens.

The USA now has an ENDEMIC high unemployment problem. The worst is yet to come: Unemployed Americans should hunker down for more job losses
Think the worst is over? Wrong. Conditions in the U.S. labor markets are awful and worsening. While the official unemployment rate is already 10.2% and another 200,000 jobs were lost in October, when you include discouraged workers and partially employed workers the figure is a whopping 17.5%.
While losing 200,000 jobs per month is better than the 700,000 jobs lost in January, current job losses still average more than the per month rate of 150,000 during the last recession.
Also, remember: The last recession ended in November 2001, but job losses continued for more than a year and half until June of 2003; ditto for the 1990-91 recession.
So we can expect that job losses will continue until the end of 2010 at the earliest. In other words, if you are unemployed and looking for work and just waiting for the economy to turn the corner, you had better hunker down. All the economic numbers suggest this will take a while. The jobs just are not coming back.
There's really just one hope for our leaders to turn things around: a bold prescription that increases the fiscal stimulus with another round of labor-intensive, shovel-ready infrastructure projects, helps fiscally strapped state and local governments and provides a temporary tax credit to the private sector to hire more workers. Helping the unemployed just by extending unemployment benefits is necessary not sufficient; it leads to persistent unemployment rather than job creation.
The long-term picture for workers and families is even worse than current job loss numbers alone would suggest. Now as a way of sharing the pain, many firms are telling their workers to cut hours, take furloughs and accept lower wages. Specifically, that fall in hours worked is equivalent to another 3 million full time jobs lost on top of the 7.5 million jobs formally lost.
This is very bad news but we must face facts. Many of the lost jobs are gone forever, including construction jobs, finance jobs and manufacturing jobs. Recent studies suggest that a quarter of U.S. jobs are fully out-sourceable over time to other countries.
Other measures tell the same ugly story: The average length of unemployment is at an all time high; the ratio of job applicants to vacancies is 6 to 1; initial claims are down but continued claims are very high and now millions of unemployed are resorting to the exceptional extended unemployment benefits programs and are staying in them longer.
Based on my best judgment, it is most likely that the unemployment rate will peak close to 11% and will remain at a very high level for two years or more.
The weakness in labor markets and the sharp fall in labor income ensure a weak recovery of private consumption and an anemic recovery of the economy, and increases the risk of a double dip recession.
As a result of these terribly weak labor markets, we can expect weak recovery of consumption and economic growth; larger budget deficits; greater delinquencies in residential and commercial real estate and greater fall in home and commercial real estate prices; greater losses for banks and financial institutions on residential and commercial real estate mortgages, and in credit cards, auto loans and student loans and thus a greater rate of failures of banks; and greater protectionist pressures.
The damage will be extensive and severe unless bold policy action is undertaken now.

Because of the export economies of so many nations with extremely cheap labor, OUR problem threatens the world.
I am actually starting to wonder about tariffs for certain nations whose cheap labor has killed American industries. A collapsed, non purchasing US economy does not help them either.

Miss Universe at Gitmo:"I didn't want to leave, it was such a relaxing place, so calm and beautiful"

A "relaxing, calm, beautiful place" may not be everyone's description of Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, where the United States holds about 240 prisoners in a detention center that has drawn condemnation from around the world. But this was the opinion of reigning Miss Universe Dayana Mendoza of Venezuela, who visited the U.S. naval facility in eastern Cuba this month on a trip organized by the United Service Organizations (USO) which supports U.S. troops.
The Guantanamo Bay base, whose presence Cuba's government has contested as illegal for years, is used by U.S. authorities as a prison camp for foreign terrorism suspects. Critics have condemned it as a symbol of abuses in Washington's war on terrorism launched after the September 11, 2001, attacks.
"It was a loooot of fun!," Mendoza wrote, describing how she and Stewart met U.S. military personnel and took rides around the camp, which is encircled by a barbed-wire fenced, minefields and watchtowers. She said they also visited a bar on the base and the "unbelievable" beach there.
"We visited the Detainees camps and we saw the jails, where they shower, how the(y) recreate themselves with movies, classes of art, books. It was very interesting," she wrote.
"I didn't want to leave, it was such a relaxing place, so calm and beautiful," she added.
Former detainees and human rights groups have alleged the use of torture, including "waterboarding" (simulated drowning) and other physical abuses, at the Guantanamo prison.
Non-Kosher Hot Dog Incites Rage At Jewish Eatery
It was an all-out frankfurter frenzy this week at a popular Jewish restaurant in Brooklyn, as a certain hot dog caused a near-riot.
It's not what you would expect: a worker in a NYC eatery caught on tape fending off a group of Jewish patrons with an electric knife.
"I was petrified - stuff was going through my mind," a patron who didn't want his name used said. "I want to live. I don't want to get stabbed for a hot dog."
The long-time patron says the chaos broke out when he and a rabbi noticed the frankfurters on the grill were non-Kosher, in a restaurant that's supposed to be dishing out the Kosher variety.
"The package didn't look Kosher," the patron said. "It was the last piece in the package."
Some customers were quick to defend the worker, who was surrounded by, according to some witnesses, a hundred enraged people.
"He just got angry," the patron said. "He wasn't about to do anything to the guys."
The rabbi, who originally certified the Shawarma King restaurant Kosher, has written a letter to the community in a Jewish newspaper. In the letter, he calls the frankfurter mix-up a "terrible mistake."
"It was a one-time incident," Borough Park resident Yosi Stern, who translated the Yiddish letter for CBS 2, said. "They caught it before it was even served to the consumers."

Perhaps this will be followed by weeks of burning cars all over the metro area, and riots in Newton and Brookline, Massachusetts.
The rabbi tells the community that a worker was sent out to buy hot dogs, and that he went to the wrong market and bought non-Kosher hot dogs.
Neighbors say the owner is an honest man.
"He's a very religious man," one neighbor says. "He studies every morning, and he's not the type of guy to fool people."
The popular spot on 13th Avenue was shut down for several days as rabbis examined the premises for non-Kosher food, and threw out equipment that came in contact with the uncertified meat.
Customers, and the restaurant's owner, say they're hoping similar incidents don't come up in the future.
The restaurant's owner says that, in addition to throwing out equipment, utensils were cleansed with a flame to purge any pieces of the non-Kosher food.

Leftist Mauricio Funes of El Salvador's former Marxist rebel FMLN party has won the country's presidential election.
He defeated his conservative rival, the Arena party's Rodrigo Avila, who has admitted defeat.
Arena had won every presidential election since the end of El Salvador's civil war 18 years ago.
Addressing jubilant supporters, Mr Funes said it was the happiest day of his life and the beginning of a new chapter of peace for the country.
Branded by his opponents as a puppet of Venezuala's President Hugo Chavez, Mr Funes vowed to respect all Salvadorian democratic institutions.
The FMLN won 51.3% of the vote against Arena's 48.7%, Reuters news agency reported.
Break with tradition
"This is the happiest night of my life, and I want it to be the night of El Salvador's greatest hope," said Mr Funes.
Mauricio Funes is the first FMLN leader who has not been a combatant"I want to thank all the people who voted for me and chose that path of hope and change."
His FMLN (Farabundo Marti National Liberation Front) party was founded by Marxist guerrilla fighters from the civil war.
The conflict ended in a UN-sponsored peace accord in 1991, after the loss of some 70,000 lives over less than two decades.
Defense Firm's Global Warming Solution: More Drones
Executives at defense behemoth Northrop Grumman are worried about climate change. The solution? Build a "global change monitoring system" -- and buy more Global Hawk surveillance drones.
In a speech yesterday at an aerospace symposium in Maryland, Robert Burke, vice president of Civil Systems for Northrop Grumman's Aerospace Systems sector, noted that the younger generation, with their "blogs" and their "twitters," are already aware of melting polar ice caps and the latest in solar technology. Now it's time for the grownups to get on board.

Abso-effing-lootely beautiful, man."As the rate of global change accelerates and budgets are squeezed, we in industry and government must change our perspective," he said. "The mind-set that makes us stick with what we know, our comfort zone, cannot last. We must strive to develop innovative concepts for Earth sensing - utilizing new platform opportunities and new instrument architectures and technology."
Specifically, Burke called for using more pilotless aircraft in Earth observation missions. The latest unmanned aerial vehicles, he argued, can offer wider coverage than geosynchronous or polar-orbiting satellites, and they can be customized to carry payloads that monitor climate change, collect atmospheric data or perform disaster assessment after storms.

So today at 2:45 these guys were on their way back ...and ...

With each minute the ice gets softer and they sink a little more especially since what is actually supporting the truck is the nice warm engine which rests in about 3 inches of water on that ice. Sicne I took that picture, the center of the wheels are no longer visible.
Apparently they are among many who think the laws of nature just don;t apply to them when the negative results are too awful to contemplate.
Feds spending millions on Kennedy legacy in Mass.
BOSTON - More than one out of every five dollars of the $126 million Massachusetts is receiving in earmarks from a $410 billion federal spending package is going to help preserve the legacy of the Kennedys.
The bill includes $5.8 million for the planning and design of a building to house a new Edward M. Kennedy Institute for the Senate. The funding may also help support an endowment for the institute.
The bill also includes $22 million to expand facilities at the John F. Kennedy Presidential Library & Museum and $5 million more for a new gateway to the Boston Harbor Islands on the Rose Kennedy Greenway, a park system in downtown Boston named after Kennedy's mother and built on land opened up by the Big Dig highway project.

The presidential candidate [1] of the Farabundo Martí National Liberation Front (FMLN), the communist revolutionaries in El Salvador the Reagan administration battled in the 1980s, is, a Monday Washington Post story noted, "a former correspondent for CNN en Espanol [2]." In the March 9 article, "In El Salvador Vote, Big Opportunity for Leftists [3]," reporter William Booth relayed from San Salvador that the journalist-turned-politician "considers himself to be El Salvador's Barack Obama." Booth relayed:
After a 12-year civil war and a peace undermined by soaring crime, leftists in El Salvador are on the verge of completing a remarkable journey from armed struggle to the presidential palace.Their candidate is a veteran TV broadcaster and morning talk show host, Mauricio Funes [4], whose Facebook page [5] lists his political views as "other." Funes, 49, a former correspondent for CNN en Español, was recently recruited by the Farabundo Marti National Liberation Front (FMLN), the revolutionary group-turned-mainstream political party that is favored by polls to win the presidency in a vote scheduled for March 15....
Funes considers himself to be El Salvador's Barack Obama -- an agent of change in a country beset by the highest murder rate in Latin America and an economy in free fall.
The comparison is overt: Funes and the FMLN use images of Obama in their ads (despite objections by the U.S. State Department), saying both candidates were smeared by their opponents as allies of extremists. The FMLN television spots complete the link by employing the Obama slogan in English and Spanish, vowing "Yes, we can!"...

An independent inspector general will look into the foreign financial ties of Chas W. Freeman Jr., the Obama administration's pick to serve as chairman of the group that prepares the U.S. intelligence community's most sensitive assessments, according to three congressional aides.
The director of national intelligence, Dennis C. Blair, last Thursday named Mr. Freeman, a veteran former diplomat, to the chairmanship of the National Intelligence Council, known inside the government as the NIC. In that job, Mr. Freeman will have access to some of America's most closely guarded secrets and be charged with overseeing the drafting of the consensus view of all 16 intelligence agencies.
His selection was praised by some who noted his articulateness and experience as U.S. ambassador to Saudi Arabia and a senior envoy to China and other nations. But it sparked concerns among some members of Congress from both parties, who asked the Office of the Director of National Intelligence's inspector general, Edward McGuire, to investigate Mr. Freeman's potential conflicts of interest.
...Among the areas likely to be scrutinized in the vetting process are Mr. Freeman's position on the international advisory board of the China National Offshore Oil Corp. (CNOOC). The Chinese government and other state-owned companies own a majority stake in the concern, which has invested in Sudan and other countries sometimes at odds with the United States, including Iran.
Mr. Freeman is also president of the nonprofit educational organization Middle East Policy Council (MEPC), which paid him $87,000 in 2006, and received at least $1 million from a Saudi prince. He also has chaired Projects International, a consulting firm that has worked with foreign companies and governments.

In a move that could help increase home ownership rates among minorities and low-income consumers, the Fannie Mae Corporation is easing the credit requirements on loans that it will purchase from banks and other lenders.
The action, which will begin as a pilot program involving 24 banks in 15 markets -- including the New York metropolitan region -- will encourage those banks to extend home mortgages to individuals whose credit is generally not good enough to qualify for conventional loans. Fannie Mae officials say they hope to make it a nationwide program by next spring.
Fannie Mae, the nation's biggest underwriter of home mortgages, has been under increasing pressure from the Clinton Administration to expand mortgage loans among low and moderate income people and felt pressure from stock holders to maintain its phenomenal growth in profits.
In addition, banks, thrift institutions and mortgage companies have been pressing Fannie Mae to help them make more loans to so-called subprime borrowers. These borrowers whose incomes, credit ratings and savings are not good enough to qualify for conventional loans, can only get loans from finance companies that charge much higher interest rates -- anywhere from three to four percentage points higher than conventional loans.
''Fannie Mae has expanded home ownership for millions of families in the 1990's by reducing down payment requirements,'' said Franklin D. Raines, Fannie Mae's chairman and chief executive officer. ''Yet there remain too many borrowers whose credit is just a notch below what our underwriting has required who have been relegated to paying significantly higher mortgage rates in the so-called subprime market.''
What are YOU looking at? ...yes you !
In moving, even tentatively, into this new area of lending, Fannie Mae is taking on significantly more risk, which may not pose any difficulties during flush economic times. But the government-subsidized corporation may run into trouble in an economic downturn, prompting a government rescue similar to that of the savings and loan industry in the 1980's.
''From the perspective of many people, including me, this is another thrift industry growing up around us,'' said Peter Wallison a resident fellow at the American Enterprise Institute. ''If they fail, the government will have to step up and bail them out the way it stepped up and bailed out the thrift industry.''

For the money.

The 20-3 seasons are the money.
The bigger the money the more thieves will be attracted.
Rodriguez is a thief.
Tejada, thief
Giambi, Bonds, Kaminiti, Sosa, Clemens, Mcgwire, Palmiero, Canseco, and by the looks, Ivan Rodriguez, but who really knows if this is right or how many? And though it really hurts to admit it, even Andy Pettite, whose contrition seemed painfully sincere, but whose story that he only did it the way he did (twice?) was hard to credit.
All we can do is to expose these thieves and cheats whose weakness eliminates them from admiration of any sort, including for those talents they were gifted with, and move on.
So, I want to see the names of the 104 cheats and thieves.
TODAY.
And perhaps we had better have a modern Judge Landis, or baseball is liable to end up like hockey. Vaguely remembered as having been eliminated day by day from american thought by the behavior of its owners and players (in the NHL it was plain greed which resulted in the strike, and loss of an entire season, which killed hockey as a major sport)
While baseball is no longer played the way I did as a kid, in countless sunny spring and summer pickup games in parks and streets in the Bronx - who would pick up a bat at 8 or 9 then or now and imagine himself to be an injected, stat and truly bloated A Rod, Tejada, Giambi or Bonds, when they could place themselves in the mind and body of real heroes with real human weaknesses like Ruth , Gehrig, Yastremski, Williams, Kaline, Koufax, Drysdale, Yogi, and Marichal ..or the national history maker - Jackie Robinson, or the silent battles of a Hank Greenberg.
If our kids cannot have any but cheats and thieves as examples and we tolerate it, for our own pleasure of seeing the long arc over the Green Monster, or into the black at Yankee Stadium, what are we telling them?
Let's see the 104, and frankly, let's get rid of them. I have been a Yankee fan since I was 5 and watched them beat the Dodgers on TV - sneaking into a separate room during Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur with a great uncle to see the forbidden during the holy days, but now I can't stand these men who make tens of millions and CHEAT as well. They are MADOFF with arms and bats.
Maybe someone like a Jeter can retrieve something for the game with a ringing statement which values the sport and not the season.
You hear me Hank?

Gulf states rebuff U.S. request that they welcome Iraq as member
ABU DHABI -- The Gulf Cooperation Council has rejected a U.S. proposal to accept Iraq as a member.Gulf Arab officials said Iraq was not suitable for membership in the six-member GCC. They said the GCC, established in 1981, was still in the process of formation and could not expand.
"When the GCC was established we did not restrict its membership to any countries," Bahraini Foreign Minister Khalid Bin Ahmed Al Khalifa said. "It is not an exclusive club. Once the GCC is a complete unit we will allow any of our brothers to come and join."
Anyone else feel urine on their back during this arab forecast of rain?
The Bush administration has urged the GCC to consider Iraq for membership. Defense Secretary Robert Gates said GCC membership for Iraq would bolster regional security and counter Iranian influence.
"Regional engagement also means that Iraq should be included in regional forums for economic and security cooperation, and considered for membership in Middle East organisations," Gates said.
These nations, who need us still to guard them from the Shia, have the unbelieveable arrogance to continue to make a pariah out of anything OTHER,that being the westrn ideal of democracy in ANY form ..while still retaining confidence we must help them to remain safe against Iran, while they work against us publically and by continuing to donate to jihad, open and stealth.
The proposal by Gates was relayed during the Manama Dialogue in Bahrain, which ended on Dec. 14. Despite its pledge, Iran did not attend the security dialogue.
"What we are after is a change in policies and a change in behavior so that Iran becomes a good neighbor of people in the region [rather] than a source of instability and violence," Gates, meant to continue in his post under Obama, said. "But one thing I think I can say with some confidence is that the President-elect Obama is under no illusions about Iran's behavior and what Iran has been doing in the region and is doing in terms of its own weapons programs."
GCC secretary-general Abdul Rahman Al Attiyah said his organization was not ready to accept Iraq. Al Attiyah, a Qatari national, said Iraq must focus on stabilizing its territory.
"The council, as it is, has made several achievements, and any option to change it requires a cautious study," Al Attiyah said. "Iraq, in its current circumstances and even in normal circumstances, is not ready to join the council."

Sales of diesel-powered vehicles and gas-electric hybrids are expected to triple their share of the U.S. auto market to a combined 17 percent by 2015, according to a study by J.D. Power and Associates.
The study also predicted that sales of vehicles equipped with four-cylinder engines will outpace sales of more powerful cars and trucks. Last year, 353,000 hybrids were sold in the U.S., accounting for 2.2 percent of the market. They are expected to comprise 7 percent of the market by 2015, while the share of diesel-powered vehicles is expected to rise to 10 percent from 3.2 percent over the same period.

Beneath the fear of job loss and depression spreading from Michigan perhaps we have a situation here that will resolve as other companies fill the demand gaps left by the demise of at least GM and Chrysler, and hire or move skilled workers from Michigan to TN, AK, AL and other places the UAW is absent from, and where company execs don't make multiples of many hundreds of line employees. We've heard this emergency bailout now called a jobs bailout, as if WE CREATE AND MAINTAIN JOBS IN ANY OTHER WAY THAN BUYING THEIR VEHICLES.
Perhaps the real naked fear we hear from Michigan execs, union leaders, and congressmen and senators is that they just found out they are manufacturing BUGGY WHIPS, and that in that new factory in Alabama they are making something better.

I mean, how can we believe this ? (it's in the NYT anyway, right?)
We have seen a lot of political hubris, scratch-my-back politics and sheer stupidity over the years. But nothing could prepare us for the charges brought Tuesday against Gov. Rod R. Blagojevich of Illinois.
The governor's administration was already under a well-publicized investigation into whether it has been selling appointments to state boards and commissions and awarding contracts and jobs in exchange for financial benefits and campaign contributions.
So what does the F.B.I. claim Mr. Blagojevich was up to while the feds were watching him? According to an F.B.I. affidavit, in recent weeks the governor plotted to sell off the United States Senate seat just vacated by President-elect Barack Obama to the highest bidder.
In exchange for his pick, authorities said Mr. Blagojevich was looking for a substantial salary for himself at a foundation or an organization affiliated with labor unions, a highly paid position for his wife on corporate boards, a cabinet post or ambassadorship for himself or promises of future campaign funds.
The affidavit also claims that the governor weighed the option of appointing himself
should no financially lucrative offer materialize. All this was recorded on court-authorized wiretaps that any target of an investigation would have to assume were in place.
The United States attorney, Patrick Fitzgerald, was clear that the complaint makes no allegations against Mr. Obama. Indeed, it quotes Mr. Blagojevich cursing the president-elect and his team "because they're not willing to give me anything except appreciation."
Mr. Blagojevich also appears to be uncommonly sensitive to criticism for someone so apparently comfortable with bare-knuckle, and worse, politics. He was recorded telling aides to inform the Tribune Company, which filed for bankruptcy protection this week, that it would get no state assistance in selling off Wrigley Field unless it fired members of The Chicago Tribune's editorial board who had called for his impeachment.
Mr. Blagojevich, a Democrat, was elected in 2002 after pledging to restore honor to the Illinois governor's office. His predecessor, Republican George Ryan, was convicted on federal fraud and racketeering charges and is now in prison. Mr. Blagojevich has urged President Bush to reduce Mr. Ryan's sentence to time served as an act of compassion. It makes one wonder if the governor sensed that, somewhere down the line, he might need some of that compassion himself.
Mr. Blagojevich must be deemed innocent until proved guilty. But surely the recorded conversations, full of expletive-laced schemes, render him unfit to appoint anyone, least of all himself, to the vacant Senate seat.
If he refuses to step aside, the Illinois Legislature should move to bypass him by removing his appointment power, impeaching him or scheduling a special election. Certainly no self-respecting candidate should accept an appointment by Mr. Blagojevich.
Dec. 9 (Bloomberg) -- Treasuries rose, pushing rates on the three-month bill negative for the first time, as investors gravitate toward the safety of U.S. government debt amid the worst financial crisis since the Great Depression.
The Treasury sold $27 billion of three-month bills yesterday at a discount rate of 0.005 percent, the lowest since it starting auctioning the securities in 1929. The U.S. also sold $30 billion of four-week bills today at zero percent for the first time since it began selling the debt in 2001.
Thus on $10,000 you'll lose $50 per year, but it's safe. On the other side of the ledger, if we (the USA) borrows the entire astronomical sum of a couple of trillion, the US taxpayer can make about $1 BILLION on that amount.
We pay you back less than we borrow as a nation, but it's OK because you can sleep at night knowing it will only deflate .005%?
This is because no one anywhere has any confidence in anything not the US govt - which PS has the approval in aggregate of about 28% of the US people.
Barack Obama and his appointees had better have a clue, and Republican actions had better be founded in the people's interest, and well explained.
But meanwhile, the Al Saud and Al Sabah will have to give us the dough to keep it safe while we make money on it for doing so.
Unemployment this morning at 16 year high
Auto maker CEO's arrive in DC to beg for $50B each in their own private jets (i.e. they are too stupid to succeed), and refuse $1 a year gestures
Auto Unions refuse to yield anything more (i.e. they are too stupid to succeed)
Over 1 million more jobs at risk in auto disaster
Credit loosening, IF THERE, is making no difference
Public confidence is SHOT. Rasmussen finds 26% think congress has a clue. 26% think congress will can 'fix' this.
We do NOT have confidence in govt, and this has been a long time building.
Everyone has stopped buying
Prices are falling in the beginning of a deflationary spiral which will cost more jobs (42" 720P LCD for $499 ..NEWEGG - GUYS&GALS)
Inventories of everything will end the need for production >> more layoffs
Gas will be $1.50/gallon by Christmas
If this continues we WILL reach a point where overseas deployment of troops WILL END. There will be no popular support.
No one will care about Sharia creep because the electricity will be going off.
No one will doubt MASSIVE federal interventions will be compulsory (whether that is true or not)
The left is WAY FAR ASCENDANT in this scene, a large part of which is already FACT.
But what really thrills me, what really feels liberating in a very personal way, is the official new prominence of Michelle Obama. Barack's better half not only has stature but is statuesque. She has coruscating intelligence, beauty, style and -- drumroll, please -- a butt. (Yes, you read that right: I'm going to talk about the first lady's butt.)

What a bonus! From the ocean of nastiness and confusion that defined this campaign from the beginning, Michelle rose up like Venus on the waves, keeping her coif above water and cruising the coattails of history to present us with a brand-new beauty norm before we knew it was even happening. Actually, it took me and a lot of other similarly configured black women by surprise. So anxious and indignant were we about Michelle getting attacked for saying anything about America that conservatives could turn into mud, we hardly looked south of her neck. I noted her business suits and the fact she hardly ever wore pants (unlike Hillary). As I gradually relaxed, as Michelle strode onto more stages and people started focusing on her clothes and presence instead of her patriotism, it dawned on me -- good God, she has a butt! "Obama's baby (mama) got back," wrote one feminist blogger. "OMG, her butt is humongous!" went a typical comment on one African-American online forum, and while it isn't humongous, per se, it is a solid, round, black, class-A boo-tay. Try as Michelle might to cover it with those Mamie Eisenhower skirts and sheath dresses meant to reassure mainstream voters, the butt would not be denied.
She doesn't have to say anything except what will win the primaries and then mumble centrist platitudes, while we worship her ass. Why not? Obviously we could do worse.
Can someone please explain to me what is going on in this place?
Look, there's a lot which we can say is paranoid, but there is nothing wrong with relentless vigilance either.
Nothing.
I am a student of history. Professionally. I have written 15 books in six languages, and have studied it all my life. I think there is something monumentally large afoot, and I do not believe it is just a banking crisis, or a mortgage crisis, or a credit crisis. Yes these exist, but they are merely single facets on a very large gemstone that is only now coming into a sharper focus.
Something of historic proportions is happening. I can sense it because I know how it feels, smells, what it looks like, and how people react to it. Yes, a perfect storm may be brewing, but there is something happening within our country that has been evolving for about ten - fifteen years. The pace has dramatically quickened in the past two.
We demand and then codify into law the requirement that our banks make massive loans to people we know they can never pay back? Why?
We learn just days ago that the Federal Reserve, which has little or no real oversight by anyone, has "loaned" two trillion dollars (that is $2,000,000,000,000) over the past few months, but will not tell us to whom or why or disclose the terms. That is our money. Yours and mine. And that is three times the 700B we all argued about so strenuously just this past September. Who has this money? Why do they have it? Why are the terms unavailable to us? Who asked for it? Who authorized it? I thought this was a government of "we the people," who loaned our powers to our elected leaders. Apparently not.
We have spent two or more decades intentionally de-industrializing our economy. Why?
We have intentionally dumbed down our schools, ignored our history, and no longer teach our founding documents, why we are exceptional, and why we are worth preserving. Students by and large cannot write, think critically, read, or articulate. Parents are not revolting, teachers are not picketing, school boards continue to back mediocrity. Why?
We have now established the precedent of protesting every close election (now violently in California over a proposition that is so controversial that it wants marriage to remain between one man and one woman. Did you ever think such a thing possible just a decade ago?). We have corrupted our sacred political process by allowing unelected judges to write laws that radically change our way of life, and then mainstream Marxist groups like ACORN and others to turn our voting system into a banana republic. To what purpose?
Now our mortgage industry is collapsing, housing prices are in free fall, major industries are failing, our banking system is on the verge of collapse, social security is nearly bankrupt, as is medicare and our entire government, our education system is worse than a joke (I teach college and know precisely what I am talking about)-the list is staggering in its length, breadth, and depth. It is potentially 1929 x ten. And we are at war with an enemy we cannot name for fear of offending people of the same religion, who cannot wait to slit the throats of your children if they have the opportunity to do so.
And now we have elected a man no one knows anything about, who has never run so much as a Dairy Queen, let alone a town as big as Wasilla, Alaska. All of his associations and alliances are with real radicals in their chosen fields of employment, and everything we learn about him, drip by drip, is unsettling if not downright scary (Surely you have heard him speak about his idea to create and fund a mandatory civilian defense force stronger than our military for use inside our borders? No? Oh of course. The media would never play that for you over and over and then demand he answer it. Sarah Palin's pregnant daughter and $150,000 wardrobe is more imporant.)
Mr. Obama's winning platform can be boiled down to one word: change.
Why?
I have never been so afraid for my country and for my children as I am now.
This man campaigned on bringing people together, something he has never, ever done in his professional life. In my assessment, Obama will divide us along philosophical lines, push us apart, and then try to realign the pieces into a new and different power structure. Change is indeed coming. And when it comes, you will never see the same nation again.
And that is only the beginning.
And I thought I would never be able to experience what the ordinary, moral German felt in the mid-1930s. In those times, the savior was a former smooth-talking rabble-rouser from the streets, about whom the average German knew next to nothing. What they did know was that he was associated with groups that shouted, shoved, and pushed around people with whom they disagreed; he edged his way onto the political stage through great oratory and promises. Economic times were tough, people were losing jobs, and he was a great speaker. And he smiled and waved a lot. And people, even newspapers, were afraid to speak out for fear that his "brown shirts" would bully them into submission. And then, he was duly elected to office, a full-throttled economic crisis at hand [the Great Depression]. Slowly but surely he seized the controls of government power, department by department, person by person, bureaucracy by bureaucracy. The kids joined a Youth Movement in his name, where they were taught what to think. How did he get the people on his side? He did it promising jobs to the jobless, money to the moneyless, and goodies for the military-industrial complex. He did it by indoctrinating the children, advocating gun control, health care for all, better wages, better jobs, and promising to re-instill pride once again in the country, across Europe, and across the world.
He did it with a compliant media-did you know that? And he did this all in the name of justice and . . . change. And the people surely got what they voted for.
(Look it up if you think I am exaggerating.)
Read your history books. Many people objected in 1933 and were shouted down, called names, laughed at, and made fun of. When Winston Churchill pointed out the obvious in the late 1930s while seated in the House of Lords in England (he was not yet Prime Minister), he was booed into his seat and called a crazy troublemaker. He was right, though.
Don't forget that Germany was the most educated, cultured country in Europe. It was full of music, art, museums, hospitals, laboratories, and universities. And in less than six years-a shorter time span than just two terms of the U. S. presidency-it was rounding up its own citizens, killing others, abrogating its laws, turning children against parents, and neighbors against neighbors. All with the best of intentions, of course. The road to Hell is paved with them.
As a practical thinker, one not overly prone to emotional decisions, I have a choice: I can either believe what the objective pieces of evidence tell me (even if they make me cringe with disgust); I can believe what history is shouting to me from across the chasm of seven decades; or I can hope I am wrong by closing my eyes, having another latte, and ignoring what is transpiring around me.
Some people scoff at me, others laugh, or think I am foolish, naive, or both. Perhaps I am. But I have never been afraid to look people in the eye and tell them exactly what I believe-and why I believe it.
I pray I am wrong. I do not think I am.
No one understands how everything fits together?
Or is it THESE GUYS who are basically clueless?
'Sorry, really didn't mean to acquire toxic banks assets with that 3/4 of a trillion I was talking about the other day, which McCain suspended his campaign over, probably costing himself the election, I meant to say we should focus on consumer loans.'
U.S. Treasury modifies bailout program
WASHINGTON: Treasury Secretary Henry Paulson Jr. on Wednesday announced a major shift in the thrust of the $700 billion financial rescue program, at the same time joining several agencies in prodding banks to speed up the thaw in the country's credit system.
Paulson said the $700 billion would not be used to buy up troubled mortgage-related securities, as the rescue effort was originally conceived, but would, instead, be used in a broader campaign to help financial markets and, in turn, make loans, including car and student loans, more accessible for creditworthy borrowers.
"During times like these, with a slowing economy and some deterioration in credit conditions, even the healthiest banks tend to become more risk-averse and restrain lending, and regulators' actions have reinforced this lending restraint in the past," Paulson said at a news conference.
But, he added pointedly, with their financial foundations already shored up by recent government support, "our banks will be more confident and better positioned to play their necessary role to support economic responsibility."
Paulson also pledged intensified government efforts to help struggling homeowners and said he and his aides "are examining strategies to mitigate" foreclosures.
And for those who have struggled to PAY their mortgages off, and own their homes? Own their cars? Ended their debts as students? What are we SCHMUCKS?
Do we at least get a visit from W and Barry who will take us to dinner before screwing us?
SCHMUCKS !
Remember this if you can ever justify spending money on a washer, dryer, Fridge or AC again.China's commercial jet sale to GE seen boosting air force modernization
INSIDE CHINA By Willy Lam* East-Asia-Intel.com, November 7, 2008Chinese authorities have scored a breakthrough for the first generation of domestically manufactured commercial aircraft, an accomplishment that will have immense significance for the modernization of the PLA air force. At the on-going Airshow at Zhuhai, just a stone's throw away from Macau's casinos, the state-owned Commercial Aircraft Corporation of China Ltd. (COMAC) sold five ARJ21-700 jets to GE's aircraft leasing arm.
The sale was worth $750 million, and GE has an option to buy 20 more of the mid-sized aircraft, which hold up to 90 passengers.
Given that COMAC was set up earlier this year, the relatively small contract is a significant leap forward for China's entire civilian and military aircraft manufacturing establishment.

China's first home-grown ARJ21-700 regional jet "Xiang Feng" (Flying Phoenix) is unveiled at the Shanghai Aircraft Manufacturing Factory in Shanghai. KCNA/Reuters
COMAC Chairman Zhang Qingwei said the breakthrough was extraordinary because "it is the first time that an aircraft that is researched and developed by China is sold to the United States, such a high-end market."
COMAC General Manager Jin Zhuanglong pointed out that while the ARJ21 (Advanced Regional Jet for the 21st Century) was designed by Chinese engineers, the company adopted a "flexible" approach in buying parts and components, including engines and software, from suppliers around the world. It is understood COMAC had sought advice from Russian and European designers and engineers.
The deal with GE at internationally competitive prices will facilitate the sale of other COMAC products in less sophisticated markets in Asia, Africa and even Latin America.
China began co-production of aircraft with Pakistan several years ago. Particularly for China-friendly nations in developing regions such as Africa, Chinese authorities are willing to cut prices through means including co-production or licensed production in the buyers' home territories.
History will record that Barack Obama's first act of diplomacy as America's president-elect took place two days after his election victory, when he dispatched his senior foreign-policy adviser, Robert Malley, to meet with Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak and Syrian President Bashar al-Assad--to outline for them the forthcoming administration's Mideast policy vis-à-vis those nations. An aide to Malley reports, "The tenor of the messages was that the Obama administration would take into greater account Egyptian and Syrian interests" than has President Bush. The Bush administration, it should be noted, has rightly recognized Syria to be not only a chief supporter of the al Qaeda insurgency in Iraq, but also the headquarters of the terrorist organization Palestinian Islamic Jihad and the longtime sponsor of Hamas--the terrorist army whose founding charter is irrevocably committed to the annihilation of Israel. Yet unlike President Bush, Obama and Malley have called for Israel to engage in peace negotiations with Syria.
A Harvard-trained lawyer and Rhodes Scholar, Robert Malley is no newcomer to the Obama team. In 2007, Obama selected him as a foreign policy adviser to his campaign. At the time, Malley was (and still is today) the Middle East and North Africa Program Director for the International Crisis Group (ICG), which receives funding from the Open Society Institute of George Soros (who, incidentally, serves on the ICG Executive Committee).
In his capacity with ICG, Malley directs a number of analysts who focus their attention most heavily on the Arab-Israeli conflict, the political and military developments in Iraq, and Islamist movements across the Middle East. Prior to joining ICG, Malley served as President Bill Clinton's Special Assistant for Arab-Israeli Affairs (1998-2001), and as National Security Adviser Sandy Berger's Executive Assistant (1996-1998).
Robert Malley was raised in France. His lineage is noteworthy. His father, Simon Malley (1923-2006), was a key figure in the Egyptian Communist Party. A passionate hater of Israel, the elder Malley was a close friend and confidante of the late PLO terrorist Yasser Arafat; an inveterate critic of "Western imperialism"; a supporter of various revolutionary "liberation movements," particularly the Palestinian cause; a beneficiary of Soviet funding; and a supporter of the 1979 Soviet invasion of Afghanistan. According to American Thinker news editor Ed Lasky, Simon Malley "participated in the wave of anti-imperialist and nationalist ideology that was sweeping the Third World [and] ... wrote thousands of words in support of struggle against Western nations."
In a July 2001 op-ed which Malley penned for the New York Times, he alleged that Israeli--not Palestinian--inflexibility had caused the previous year's Camp David peace talks (brokered by Bill Clinton) to fall apart. This was one of several controversial articles Malley has written--some he co-authored with Hussein Agha, a former adviser to Arafat--blaming Israel and exonerating Arafat (the most prolific Jew-killer since Adolph Hitler) for the failure of the peace process.
Malley's identification of Israel as the cause of the Camp David impasse has been widely embraced by Palestinian and Arab activists around the world, by Holocaust deniers like Norman Finkelstein, and by anti-Israel publications such as Counterpunch. It should be noted that Malley's account of the Camp David negotiations is entirely inconsistent with the recollections of the key figures who participated in those talks--specifically, then-Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Barak, then-U.S. President Bill Clinton, and then-U.S. Ambassador Dennis Ross (Clinton's Middle East envoy).
Malley also has written numerous op-eds urging the U.S. to disengage from Israel to some degree, and recommending that America reach out to negotiate with its traditional Arab enemies such as Syria, Hamas, Hezbollah (a creature of Iran dedicated to the extermination of the Jews and death to America), and Muqtada al-Sadr (the Shiite terrorist leader in Iraq).
In addition, Malley has advised nations around the world to establish relationships with, and to send financial aid to, the Hamas-led Palestinian government in Gaza. In Malley's calculus, the electoral victory that swept Hamas into power in January 2006 was a manifestation of legitimate Palestinian "anger at years of humiliation and loss of self-respect because of Israeli settlement expansion, Arafat's imprisonment, Israel's incursions, [and] Western lecturing ..."Moreover, Malley contends that it is both unreasonable and unrealistic for Israel or Western nations to demand that Syria sever its ties with Hamas, Palestinian Islamic Jihad, or Iran. Rather, he suggests that if Israel were to return the Golan Heights (which it captured in the 1967 Six Day War, and again in the 1973 Yom Kippur War--two conflicts sparked by Arab aggression which sought so permanently wipe the Jewish state off the face of the earth) to Syrian control, Damascus would be inclined to pursue peace with Israel.
Malley has criticized the U.S. for allegedly remaining "on the sidelines" and being a "no-show" in the overall effort to bring peace to the nations of the Middle East. Exhorting the Bush administration to change its policy of refusing to engage diplomatically with terrorists and their sponsoring states, Malley wrote in July 2006: "Today the U.S. does not talk to Iran, Syria, Hamas, the elected Palestinian government or Hezbollah.... The result has been a policy with all the appeal of a moral principle and all the effectiveness of a tired harangue."
This inclination to negotiate with any and all enemies of the U.S. and Israel--an impulse which Malley has outlined clearly and consistently--has had a powerful influence on Barack Obama.
It is notable that six months ago the Obama campaign and Malley hastily severed ties with one another after the Times of London reported that Malley had been meeting privately with Hamas leaders on a regular basis--something Obama had publicly pledged never to do. At the time, Obama campaign spokesman Ben LaBolt minimized the significance of this monumentally embarrassing revelation, saying: "Rob Malley has, like hundreds of other experts, provided informal advice to the campaign in the past. He has no formal role in the campaign and he will not play any role in the future."
But indeed, within hours after Obama's election victory, Malley was back as a key player in the president-elect's team of advisors--on his way to Syria. Mr. Obama, meanwhile, received a most friendly communication from Hamas, congratulating him on his "historic victory."

Rich nations should ditch 'unsustainable' lifestyles: China's WenChinese Premier Wen Jiabao and a top UN official urged industrialised nations Friday to alter their lifestyles and not let the global financial crisis hamper climate change efforts.
Industrialised nations should also help developing countries respond to climate change, Wen said at the opening of a two-day international meeting on global warming in Beijing.
"The developed countries have a responsibility and an obligation to respond to global climate change by altering their unsustainable way of life," the state news agency Xinhua quoted him as saying.
"As the global financial crisis spreads and worsens, and the world economy slows down, the international community must not waver in its determination to tackle climate change."
"Industrial countries must meet their technology transfer obligations," he told journalists.
I wrote of Michelle Obama, last April
But yet there are still honorable, and well known historians who claim that's not socialism.Michelle Obama and the zero sum game of socialism.....
"The truth is, in order to get things like universal health care and a revamped education system, then someone is going to have to give up a piece of their pie so that someone else can have more."
This example is minor. Other larger tests await, and unfortunately they come after the HUGE socialist bailout of banks, insurance companies, brokerages and apparently, the auto industry is up next. It's hard to justify denial of help to individuals, when the state has extended so much to people who spend $138,000 in banquet expenses as part of a $400k week, weeks after getting $80 billion in a bailout. Typically, one even wonders if the present administration even gave any of this such consideration.
When she appeared and CONNECTED, my observation was that it was ELECTRIC. She owned that mike, that stage that moment. She talked right to people. It was no 'address'. We had heard most of the stump speech in parts, of course, but she diverted plenty speak to THAT crowd.
In fact the last time I saw a crowd that size worked like it was.....

as he clasped our hands with both of his, and spoke to us, like the daddy of the bride at some wedding in 2000.
People like Sarah Palin because SHE IS REAL.
Once chosen McCain's people needed to get OUT OF THE WAY. They picked unorthodox, and they should have lived with it.
Now they are telling us that she didn't know if Africa was a nation or a continent? No what they are really telling us is that John McCain is so incompetent he picks morons.
Now these aides are telling us they are upset because when they showed up at a hotel to get her, she was stepping out of the shower in her robe? No, they are telling us they are prudish ultra WASP snobs who in the immortal words of Gus Portolakos are like dry toast. UNFIT to connect with actual humans who live actual lives.
It gets worse with complaints about shopping, and diva, and temper...UGH
And Mrs. Palin?
Refuses to comment on gossip spread by unnamed sources and "small, bitter" people saying "foolish things"...on relationship with McCain: No tension. "I love him...I honor him."Responding to a question on whether she has any "hurt feelings," Palin laughs cheerfully. "This is politics! Of course not. It's rough and tumble and you've got to have a thick skin just like I've got."
Well, I'd be handing out heads, but then, I don't play well with others, I suppose.
To Sarah though, perhaps it's best served cold. I like habaneros.

UN envoy calls on Taliban to allow aid to reach most vulnerable people
THE UNITED Nations has urged the Taliban to actively participate in delivering aid to vulnerable people in Taliban-dominated areas of the country.
The UN's special envoy to Afghanistan, Kai Eide, said all warring factions should allow humanitarian aid access to parts of the country that most need it, even if their political aims do not match those of the world body.
"I urge the Taliban and their leaders to assure us that food aid is properly delivered to vulnerable people in Taliban-dominated areas and to participate in expanding humanitarian aid in the country," Eide said.
Here's what I urge. Come on out, surrender your weapons, and figure out another way to go, OR DIE.
What a totally useless waste of resources is the UN. How much is this Eide getting paid to urge and insist?
Collect the parking fines and set them on their way. Even UNESCO and UNICEF are no hotbeds of racist dogma.
We already had one Horses Ass award today, but boy this one is tempting
Over the past year, anecdotal evidence for a cooling planet has exploded. China has its coldest winter in 100 years. Baghdad sees its first snow in all recorded history. North America has the most snowcover in 50 years, with places like Wisconsin the highest since record-keeping began. Record levels of Antarctic sea ice, record cold in Minnesota, Texas, Florida, Mexico, Australia, Iran, Greece, South Africa, Greenland, Argentina, Chile -- the list goes on and on.No more than anecdotal evidence, to be sure. But now, that evidence has been supplanted by hard scientific fact. All four major global temperature tracking outlets (Hadley, NASA's GISS, UAH, RSS) have released updated data. All show that over the past year, global temperatures have dropped precipitously.
A compiled list of all the sources can be seen here. The total amount of cooling ranges from 0.65C up to 0.75C -- a value large enough to wipe out most of the warming recorded over the past 100 years. All in one year's time. For all four sources, it's the single fastest temperature change ever recorded, either up or down.
Scientists quoted in a past DailyTech article link the cooling to reduced solar activity which they claim is a much larger driver of climate change than man-made greenhouse gases. The dramatic cooling seen in just 12 months time seems to bear that out. While the data doesn't itself disprove that carbon dioxide is acting to warm the planet, it does demonstrate clearly that more powerful factors are now cooling it.
Let's hope those factors stop fast. Cold is more damaging than heat. The mean temperature of the planet is about 54 degrees. Humans -- and most of the crops and animals we depend on -- prefer a temperature closer to 70.
Maybe if we burn more fossil fuel and produce more styrofoam cheese doodles and insulated coffee cups we can save the planet from a new ice age. If not, maybe Al Gore has destroyed earth
Historically, the warm periods such as the Medieval Climate Optimum were beneficial for civilization. Corresponding cooling events such as the Little Ice Age, though, were uniformly bad news.
Update 2/27: The graph for HadCRUT (above), as well as the linked graphs for RSS and UAH are generated month-to-month; the temperature declines span a full 12 months of data. The linked GISS graph was graphed for the months of January only, due to a limitation in the plotting program.
Rendell: Obama coverage was embarrassing
Pennsylvania Gov. Ed Rendell was supposed to give "closing remarks" during this afternoon's Shorenstein Center-sponsored panel discussion with all three Sunday show moderators -- NBC's Tom Brokaw, ABC's George Stephanopoulous and CBS's Bob Schieffer -- but instead, he opened up a can of worms about bias in 2008 election coverage
"Ladies and gentleman, the coverage of Barack Obama was embarrassing," said Rendell, in the ballroom at Denver's Brown Palace Hotel. "It was embarrassing."
Rendell, an ardent Hillary Rodham Clinton supporter during the primaries, now backs Obama in the general election. Brokaw and Rendell began debating campaign coverage, including the on-air comments by Lee Cowan, and when MSNBC came up, Rendell went after the cable network.
"MSNBC was the official network of the Obama campaign," Rendell said, who called their coverage "absolutely embarrassing."Chris Matthews, Rendell said, "loses his impartiality when he talks about the Clintons."
At that point, PBS's Judy Woodruff, who was moderating the moderators event, said: "Why don't we let Governor Rendell sit down."
Judy, you had the basis for a real discussion and you cut it off. What's the matter 'sweety', sailing too close the wind, are we?
Tom, I thought better of you than that 'de rigeur' sounding corporate defense. It would be interesting to know, of the total (miniscule) audience that watches MSNBC in a 24 hour span, what % is attributable to Olberman and Mr. Tingly ThighThat was met with applause from the crowd of big-time media figures, which included Arianna Huffington, Gwen Ifill, Al Hunt, and Chuck Todd.
Woodruff allowed Brokaw to respond, and in defending the network, he said that Matthews and Keith Olbermann are "not the only voices" on MSNBC.
Support Harry's Place Blogburst
Harry's Place, a UK blog dedicated to promoting the ideals of freedom and democracy, is being sued by Mohammed Sawalha, the President of the British Muslim Initiative, which has been linked to Hamas and the Islamic Brotherhood, both terrorist organizations. The blog reports that Mr. Sawalha, according to the BBC...
"master minded much of Hamas' political and military strategy" and in London "is alleged to have directed funds, both for Hamas' armed wing, and for spreading its missionary dawah".
In their revelation of the impending lawsuit against them leveled by Mohammed Sawalha, they write:
Mr Sawalha claims that we have "chosen a malevolent interpretation of a meaningless word". In fact, we did no more than translate a phrase which appeared in an Al Jazeera report of Mr Sawalha's speech. When Al Jazeera changed that phrase from "Evil Jew" to "Jewish Lobby", we reported that fact, along with the statement that it had been a typographical error.
Mr Sawalha has been the prime mover in a number of Hamas and Muslim Brotherhood associated projects. He is President of the British Muslim Initiative. He is the past President of the Muslim Association of Britain. He was the founder of IslamExpo, and is registered as the holder of the IslamExpo domain name. He is also a trustee of the Finsbury Park Mosque....
...Mr Sawalha says that the attribution of the phrase "Evil Jew" to him implies that he is "anti-semitic and hateful". Notably, he does not take issue with our reporting of the revelation, made in a Panorama documentary in 2006, that he is a senior activist in the clerical fascist terrorist organisation, Hamas.
It looks like Harry's Place is going up against some pretty top-notch lawyers on this one, and they've got guts, but as the post goes on to say:

Man found in WI basement covered in BBQ sauce
APPLETON,
Wisc. (NEWSCHANNEL 3) - A couple telephoned police in the middle of the
night after finding a man in their basement covered head to toe in
barbecue sauce.
"He told the officers that it was urban camouflage," said the homeowner.
This happened in Wisconsin.
The homeowners say they woke up to whistling sounds.
The husband grabbed his shotgun and headed toward the basement where he found the sauced-up intruder.
He held him at gunpoint until police arrived.
The guy told officers he covered himself in barbecue sauce because he wanted to hide from the government.
He now faces burglary charges.
\Exclusive: No ice at the North Pole
Polar scientists reveal dramatic new evidence of climate change
By Steve Connor, Science Editor
Friday, 27 June 2008
It seems unthinkable, but for the first time in human history, ice is on course to disappear entirely from the North Pole this year.
The disappearance of the Arctic sea ice, making it possible to reach the Pole sailing in a boat through open water, would be one of the most dramatic - and worrying - examples of the impact of global warming on the planet. Scientists say the ice at 90 degrees north may well have melted away by the summer.
"From the viewpoint of science, the North Pole is just another point on the globe, but symbolically it is hugely important. There is supposed to be ice at the North Pole, not open water," said Mark Serreze of the US National Snow and Ice Data Centre in Colorado.
If it happens, it raises the prospect of the Arctic nations being able to exploit the valuable oil and mineral deposits below these a bed which have until now been impossible to extract because of the thick sea ice above.
Seasoned polar scientists believe the chances of a totally icefreeNorth Pole this summer are greater than 50:50 because the normally thick ice formed over many years at the Pole has been blown away and replaced by hugeswathes of thinner ice formed over a single year.
Ok,..so I see lots of 'melting' right? I mean, they printed the graph..so it must be factual, right?
Ocean levels?
Additional moisture in the atmosphere?
Where is it? Maybe with the Iraqi WMD's ?
Maybe this is right and the north pole is melting, but fewer questions by the supposedly skeptical are being asked of these scientists than were directed at Colin Powell
Why?
Are the jewish neocons destroying the nation?Do we need to become socialist, instead of whatever we are?
Should we pound the Al Saud to ashes and dust instead of being AH buds?
Should we all speak spanish? Or chinese?
Should we ban meat?
Stop all taxes?
Should we invade Iran, kill their leaders, and convert them?
Put me in the category of being unhappy with the nation's direction, but none of the reasons for that would lead me to conclude anything but that the election of Obama would make me even more unhappy.
Newsweak:
This kind of poll is about the lead I would have expected.Barack (??? If it was the other way around would they say 'John'?) finally has his bounce. For weeks many political experts and pollsters have been wondering why the race between Democrat Barack Obama and Republican John McCain had stayed so tight, even after the Illinois senator wrested the nomination from Hillary Clinton. With numbers consistently showing rock-bottom approval ratings for President Bush and a large majority of Americans unhappy with the country's direction, the opposing-party candidate should, in the normal course, have attracted more disaffected voters. Now it looks as if Obama is doing just that. A new NEWSWEEK Poll shows that he has a substantial double-digit lead, 51 percent to 36 percent, over McCain among registered voters nationwide.
But by the time November rolls around the landscape will have changed a dozen times.
Never the less, if this story doesn't, by its sycophant-ish, sick sweet, referral to Barack demonstrate the fact that the MSM is not just in the tank but PROMOTING Obama, then we only need to consider that only Fox has bothered to report in detail (or at all) the story of multiple party leaders (including a former prez candidate - Dodd) receiving sweetheart loans from Countrywide mortgage, amid phone calls to their CEO looking for preferential treatment, while the mortgage crisis bloomed around them.
ROME (Reuters) - An Italian couple who were caught having sex in a church confessional
box while morning Mass was being said have repented and made peace with the local bishop.
The couple, in their early 30s, were detained by police earlier this month after they had
made love in the confessional box in the cathedral in northern Cesena. They were cautioned for obscene acts in public and disturbing a religious function.
Their lawyer said they had been drinking all night and realized they had gone too far.
The path of true love is strewn with many obstacles
The lawyer told the area's local newspaper on Wednesday the couple met with the local bishop on Tuesday night, asked for his forgiveness and that he had given it.
Last week the bishop celebrated a "Mass of reparation" in the cathedral where the confessional box incident took place to make up for the sacrilege.
From NO QUARTER:
I learned over the weekend why the Republicans who have seen the tape of Michelle Obama ranting about "whitey" describe it as "STUNNING." I have not seen it but I have heard from five separate sources who have spoken directly with people who have seen the tape. It features Michelle Obama and Louis Farrakhan. They are sitting on a panel at Jeremiah Wright's Church when Michelle makes her intemperate remarks. Whoops!! When that image comes out it will enter the politcal ads hall of fame. It will be right up there with the little girl plucking daisy petals in the famous 1964 ad LBJ used against Barry Goldwater.
Barack may have quit his church but his religious problems are not over. Barack Obama has a Nation of Islam problem that will receive more attention in the coming days. Before Barack came on the scene, THE MAN in his political district was Louis Farrakhan. No one could take Alice Palmer's seat without Farrakhan's blessing. No one. I do not fault Barack Obama for seeking out the blessing of Farrakhan, but the story of what was done behind the scenes to get rid of Barack's predecessor--Alice Palmer--has not been told. A knowledgeable source tells me that Tony Rezko played a direct role in this feat. And Rezko has been tight with Farrakhan.
It also should come as no surprise that Barack hired two members of the Nation of Islam to work on his staff--Jennifer Mason and Cynthia K. Miller. (And no, I am not merely recycling info initially reported by Debbie Schlussel. I have two independent Chicago sources for this info.) If Jeremiah Wright and Michael Pfleger had kept their yaps buttoned none of this would mean much. But the fact that both men have been--until scrubbed from the website in recent weeks--listed as spiritual advisors to Barack Obama and also are very close to Louis Farrakhan, forces the question about Barack's faith and beliefs.
In probing those matters we begin to understand that the Nation of Islam has been a critical component of Barack Obama's base of support. And, I am told, Louis Farrakhan has been careful to use Tony Rezko as the intermediary in his relationship with Barack. This is not guilt by association, this is guilt because of actual relationship. Farrakhan, Wright, and Pfleger are each on tape in various settings spewing the most vile racists garbage in the guise of preaching. Barack Obama, up to this point, has tried to pretend he had no idea that these men had these thoughts or said these things.
NONSENSE!! He knew and he knows. And the gig will be up when the Michelle tape hits the airwaves. One source described how this tape was acquired. Let's just say that one of the republican candidates who is no longer in the race, but had a dandy oppo research capability, uncovered this gem. If Republican poohbahs have their way the tape will remain on ice until October. But when it comes out, Barack will be permanently branded with the Nation of Islam. That's not a winning platform in November. And Barack's bundlers understand this threat. I also have learned some major financial backers are asking the Barack team about the tape and are being stonewalled. It is a wild card in the political campaign that has not yet played out.
MANAMA (AFP) - Bahrain's anticipated appointment of a Jewish woman as ambassador to the United States - the first for an Arab country - is not a public relations stunt, a senior official said on 31 May. "This is not a public relations move," the official told AFP, referring to the expected naming soon of Huda Nunu as the Gulf kingdom's ambassador to Washington. The official, speaking on condition of anonymity, said King Hamad informed US officials during a visit to Washington in March of Bahrain's intention to name Nunu. The Jewish population amounts to no more than 37 among a total of around 530,000 people. "This move is not propaganda. It reflects a climate of tolerance towards minorities in Bahrain," which is ruled by a Sunni dynasty and has a disgruntled Shiite majority. Nunu will be the third Bahraini woman to be appointed as an ambassador
But hey, there's a good reason. From Reuters ....Algeria Shuts Down 26 Protestant Churches
Authorities in the overwhelmingly Muslim nation of Algeria have closed half of the Protestant churches in the country over the last six months, alerted persecution watchdog groups this week.
Fri, May. 30, 2008 Posted: 11:59:29 AM EST
Authorities in the overwhelmingly Muslim nation of Algeria have closed half of the Protestant churches in the country over the last six months, alerted persecution watchdog groups this week.
Twenty-six Algerian churches were shut down either by official written order or verbal warning since November 2007, according to Open Doors USA. The churches, ranging in size from several dozens to more than 1,000 members, are victims of a recent aggressive campaign against Christians.![]()
It is feared that if persecution continues all the churches will be closed by the end of the year.
Abu Amrane Chikh, head of the government-appointed Higher Islamic Council, said uproar in the West over a recent prosecution of an Algerian woman on a charge of practising Christianity was being fomented for the benefit of foreigners.
"There are some church evangelists and reformist journalists who want to sow discord among brothers, and their long-term political goal is to create a Christian minority coupled with some foreign institutions," he said in an interview with the website of the El Khabar daily newspaper.
"This is a new form of colonization that is hidden behind freedom of worship," said Chikh, whose body regulates religious practice in the former French colony.
"The evangelist movement is characterized by a secret activity that violates the Koran and the Sunna in one way or another," he said, referring to Islam's holy book and Islamic practice based on words and deeds of the Prophet.
Coupled with the story from Birmingham, one can only wonder where Islam's Dorian Gray portrait resides.
The U.S. government has yet to develop a strategic counter-ideology to Islamist extremism, the nominee to head the National Counterterrorism Center revealed last week.
Excuse me while I yawn....gee, ya think?
Critics say the U.S. government has failed to understand the military and strategic threat posed by Islamist extremism, an important first step in developing a counter-ideology.
I get that twisty feeling in my stomach when I read that. Been writing and saying that for
YEARS and been regarded as a lunatic, I'm sure that's true of most reading this.
Michael Leiter, the nominee for NCTC director, told the Senate Intelligence Committee May 6, that analysts are "looking at radicalization from a number of angles," including religious, ethnic and psychological.
There is JUST ONE ANGLE
"And these are all critical elements of understanding the process of radicalization and then designing strategies," he said.
Strategies? We are looking for strategies to CONVINCE those fighting in the way of Allah to do otherwise? Get an authoritative mullah or Sheikh? Oh, can't find one? Let's ask Tantawi, ok? What's your strategy for that?
However, in terms of coordination and strategic planning, "those are far more nascent," Leiter said.
"And I think that, if confirmed, I would view it as my number one strategic planning priority to forcefully coordinate and synchronize U.S. government efforts," he said.
What the hell does that mean?
Leiter said progress has been made in coordinating government "messaging" (x-lation..they now use IM) as well as foreign aide, private investment overseas and other efforts to "to counter the spread of the ideology which contributes to terrorism."
That would be interesting to see - "other efforts to counter the spread of the ideology which contributes to terrorism." All we have to do is refute 1400 years of theory and jurisprudence over there, no problemo.
Leiter said the funding of terrorism from Saudi Arabia is "very serious" despite Saudi government efforts to disrupt Al Qaida on the Arabian peninsula.
Leiter said a "significant percentage" of intelligence used by his agency is gathering by "signals intercepts."
"That is a significant portion of what we look at to understand terrorists' plans, intent and the like," he said.
X-lation....after 7 years, we have NO ONE ON THE INSIDE. Anyone shocked? They have no comprehension of what they are fighting.
Why are so many Britons emigrating?Last updated: 4:36 PM BST 20/05/2008Two million British citizens have left the UK in a decade, the greatest exodus from the country in almost a century. The Office of National Statistics is expected to release figures later today showing that more than two million Britons have emigrated in the last ten years.
![]()
In the same year, over 500,000 foreign
nationals arrived in the UK, which gives a total of almost four million immigrants over a decade.
Why are so many Britons emigrating?
Is it the prospect of a better life elsewhere, or are British citizens repelled by life in their native land?
Has globalisation made it easier to settle abroad?
Say about that why.....
Vilkommen, Bienvenue....
Just one thing, once you get here,,,, START HAVING MORE KIDS, and learn the damn language ;)
The republicans are Hastert and Foley and Delay and Cheney today, not Reagan and Goldwater.
The Globe reports:
In the 14 years since 1994, scandals, corruption, big spending, hypocritical religious moralizing and a spiritless ideal-less stupefying sleep walking has overtaken that party. In national elections, Republican candidates count on a big money advantage over Democrats. Not this year. Fund-raising by Republicans is down sharply from past election cycles.
Ironically today we can see the democrats have doubled down on their identity since 1972, but the republicans ..symbolized by the drifting meaninglessness of the Bush foreign policy right now. Ideas disconnected from reality, and vague, inconsistent ideas at that.

Religion is not a substitute for conservative ideas. It has a place AMONG SOME conservative ideas, but that is all, and this forms a major part of (churchgoing) Americans looking away from the GOP. Moralizing while schtupping pages, and then passing laws about your sick relatives, is NOT conservative anything.
The venal and sensual degrading of some of the congressional members, and senatorial members and others in the GOP are iconic of a loss of motive force, and have become a symbol of what the public sees, and no amount of carping about media can dissuade from that conclusion.
Bush's (and McCain's) stand on the border is another iconic moment.
South America on brink of war
By Martin Arostegui
March 3, 2008SANTA CRUZ, Bolivia -- South America was on the brink of war yesterday as Venezuela and Ecuador amassed troops on the Colombian border in response to the killing of a Marxist rebel leader.
Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez threatened to join the rebels in a war to overthrow hard-line Colombian President Alvaro Uribe, a key ally of the United States, deploying tanks, fighter jets and thousands of troops along the Colombian border.
Ecuadorean President Rafael Correa also ordered troops to the border, expelled Colombia's ambassador and recalled its ambassador to Bogota, but left its embassy open. Venezuela closed its embassy in Colombia and ordered all diplomats home.
I pray...PRAY.. that he gives us an excuse to come to Columbia's aid.

Do they want Roe V Wade overturned?
Would that be because it is bad constitutional law, or because abortion is murder. Or does it matter? What about a woman's control over her own body? (Hey just asking) Does it matter? Goldwater believed it WAS a woman's right to control her body.Do they want a balanced budget? In a war without a defined endpoint?
If so, what about taxes? How do you pay for the security of the people? (Hey, just asking)
Is a secure nearly impenetrable border (from the outside, to illegals) a conservative issue? I think so. Then what about immigration? 1900 US Census, 76 million. 1900-1924 18 million southern europeans, slavs and jews make it here. That's 24%. Our population in 1980 was 226 million and we took in HOW MANY? Did we do okay with our immigrants from 1900-1924? Is that a conservative issue? Was our culture destroyed by this flood of one fourth of our nation JUST from southern europe?
Family VALUES, is that conservative issue? Well.... ‘To Goldwater, government did not belong either in your boardroom or your bedroom.’ That's a judeo christian (and OTHER) ethic NOT a conservative value. I don't care if my neighbor sacrifices goats and has orgies as long as his fence is high enough. Neither did Barry Goldwater.."When you say “radical right” today, I think of these moneymaking ventures by fellows like Pat Robertson and others who are trying to take the Republican Party and make a religious organization out of it. If that ever happens, kiss politics goodbye. " In response to Moral Majority founder Jerry Falwell's opposition to the nomination of Sandra Day O'Connor to the Supreme Court, of which Falwell had said, “Every good Christian should be concerned,” Goldwater retorted: “I think every good Christian ought to kick Falwell right in the ass.”. This, btw is an almost exact match for Mr. McCain's thoughts on that.
How about gay rights....well....
“You don't have to be straight to be in the military; you just have to be able to shoot straight.” (Guess who?)in 1996 Barry Goldwater told Bob Dole, whose own presidential campaign received lukewarm support from conservative Republicans: “We're the new liberals of the Republican Party. Can you imagine that?”
Upset because Mr McCain voted against Bush's tax cuts, well he wanted SPENDING CUTS to match. That's the record. Which is the more conservative viewpoint?
Likewise Harry Truman and FDR would be considered reactionary, xenophobic war criminals by many in today's democratic party.
So for those of you foaming at the mouth and with loosening bowels over John McCain, get a grip and think of what the middle east will be like 3 years after an Obama or Clinton victory because you indulged yourselves in a fit of conservative chic deranged bashing of John McCain IF HE IS NOMINATED
Among those in New Hampshire who valued a candidate who “says what he believes,” 53 percent supported McCain. The next closest candidate? Mitt Romney at 13 percent.
I wonder if Barry Goldwater would be 'conservative' enough for those who wish to sacrifice the next election on the altar of conservative purity?
GERTZ:The European Union has been quietly building detention camps for illegal immigrants in North Africa. The detention camps were meant to stop the flood of illegal migrants from North Africa to Western Europe. So far, detention centers have been established in Libya, Morocco and Tunisia.
Italy and Spain have been the biggest sponsors of the North African detention centers. Italy plans to build at least one detention camp and intends to fund another two such facilities.
The detention centers were ordered after EU states concluded that they were unable to block the flow of Africans through the Mediterranean and Atlantic Ocean to southern Europe. Until recently, some North African countries, particularly Libya, refused to cooperate with EU countries.
I have asked this before, WHY DOES ITALY HAVE A NAVY?
The USS America, and Italian Carrier Garibaldi (click for larger image)
Today, Libya has taken a 180 degree turn and was destroying immigrant shantytowns and deporting illegal en masse.
The use of detention centers has aroused anger in North Africa. In Algeria, dozens of families have filed suit against the Spanish and Moroccan embassies. The families said Spain has detained their children and kept them incommunicado.
The families said at least 40 Algerians who left their country for Spain from September 2006 through January 2007 were missing. They said they were urging Algerian President Abdelaziz Bouteflika to intervene.

Despite increased efforts, Africans continue to flood Europe. Officials said 17,000 illegal immigrants arrived in Spain in illegal boats during the first 11 months of 2007, most of whom landing on the Canary Islands. A total of 37,647 illegal migrants arrived in Spain in the same period of 2006.
The reason is the Nike factory in Indonesia where they were throughout the 90's paying wages which made workers
We buy the food we have to and like, and pick it carefully (no not at the health food store, but after seeing the size of the chicken breast on our last purchase we are wondering WTF they are feeding these frankenchicks). And with great resentment for the waste of money the energy costs have engendered. We go out of our way to buy American, but when we looked for an LCD screen ......it says Westinghouse but the LCD is surely made in Tolucca, or outside of Penang. What is Westinghouse today anyway?
We are already staying home. I suspect, so are a lot of others. Anyone running out to spend $20+ to see a POS movie showing people's pus engorged heads being sliced off? Sorry, but the galactically depressing Atonement was a waste of that money. I can just read the news for that.
Now what happens in at the Bourse, the NIkkei? Things have consequences.
The proper reaction of the Fed is not to enable more spending it is to enable MAKING THINGS (including software), and then to have the rest of the government get the hell out of the way. Today they are probably all dying around the world to have the fed lower interest rates again so we can all, here in the USA, run out and buy another foreign made durable good.
With the headlines and angst not just on Wall Street but expressed at exit polls during the primaries we have had BEFORE this 'thing' became the gigantor of election year fears...we now have the candidates and congress 'doing something' about the sub prime crisis which threatens to to rob this economy of disposable income, and equity and bathe 2008 in a newer fear than Adam Gadahn's marching stupidities. We will not be worrying about Al Qaeda, the MMA, Pakistan, and Ahamdinejad if every 8th house has a 'for sale' sign, and corporations buy nothing and create no new positions in order to conserve cash, I promise, you.Millions (anyone have a real number, btw?) of americans are seriously delinquent (60 days plus?) on their sub prime mortgages. Congress and the candidates now feel they have to 'do something'. Whatever it is, it had better be a non zero sum solution. So far the fed has been lowering rates to keep injecting cash into the system, more cash = some more inflation - how much is anyone's real guess, but in the outer world, where the perception rules that still means 'we are cheapening the dollar', and the Al Saud get paid in value which is less than yesterday. Of course and as usual it's all wrong
since injecting cash does not cure lack of confidence, and more liquidity for american consumers might the only thing to allow us to support the economy and keep affording the gasoline and the $$ flowing to the Al Saud so they can print more books about the fornicating, jew controlled kufrs that have to die anyway.Nevermind that for moment. Here is the Financial Times on some legislative ideas.
Well, well, right? Suppose we do this? You are now sitting in Citibank and 5% of your mortgages just legally were dropped back the levels that they were signed at, instead of the ballooned rate. You are now missing x% of your planned cash for the what....year, 5 years, life of the mortgages? Well since the courts just became an agent of increasing the risk in mortgages, we all know what capitalism's real answer has always been to increased risk, don't we? Of course 'Citigroup' (we'll use them as the perceptive villain for everyone who joined with them) created the increased risk to begin with with their 'product'.Beyond the election-year rhetoric, most insiders who have stakes in the foreclosure mess, from bankruptcy lawyers and mortgage servicers to global investment banks, are keeping a close eye on Congress.
Specifically, they are watching the Emergency Home Ownership and Mortgage Equity Protection Act of 2007, a controversial proposal that was created by a compromise between Democrats on the House judiciary committee and Republican Steve Chabot of Ohio, who was the only Republican to vote in favour of the bill when it passed the committee late last year. The proposal, which House Speaker Nancy Pelosi has vowed to take up early this year, would allow homeowners to modify the mortgage of their primary residence in court under bankruptcy. Under current law, judges can only modify mortgages on second homes. Passage of the bill, Mr Chabot and Democratic sponsors say, could save hundreds of thousands of homeowners from foreclosure.
Mr Chabot’s support of the bankruptcy bill, which faces tough opposition from banking lobbyists, underscores the changing political current in Washington. Just three years ago, Mr Chabot was a strong advocate of sweeping bankruptcy legislation that limited protection and was hailed as a victory for business lobbyists and the Bush administration. Now, he is seeking to expand bankruptcy protection.
Some analysts say they believe that even the most conservative Republicans in Congress could support the legislation if it is narrowly targeted and will keep voters from losing their homes – even if it contradicts “free market” principles.
So we have Bush and Bernanke doing what the DEMS agree with, and we have the dems and repubs in congress creating a situation in which while the fed lowers rates to inject $$, the banks increase rates to make up for what the judges do to save homes for people who should NEVER have been sold mortgages, any more than a Mercedes. The major benefit aside from these people having homes, is that they can then pay the rest of their bills, and buy a washing machine or two.
Here's Hillary in NH...
In the meantime, none of this makes the other war any easier to fight or win.Experts say voters generally oppose taxpayer-funded bail-outs, though they will also want to stop whole neighbourhoods from suffering under the weight of the subprime crisis. At a town hall meeting last week in Merrimack, New Hampshire, Hillary Clinton, the presidential candidate, was quick to point out in response to a question about personal responsibility that she had little sympathy for speculators in the housing market. But she conceded that the crisis could have a “cascading effect” on the economy that had to be stemmed, even if it meant that some who “should have known better” would be given relief. “Where we can intervene more quickly to prevent it [the economy] from falling off a cliff, we should do that,” she said.
Lobbyists who are familiar with the bill ( Emergency Home Ownership and Mortgage Equity Protection Act of 2007) say they believe it will pass the House, but it is unclear whether it will win approval in the Senate. The White House has not said it would fight the proposal, but proponents of the bill said privately that they believed the Bush administration would side with critics who claim it would have unintended consequences.
The Mortgage Bankers Association, which is fighting the proposal, says that if judges are allowed unilaterally to change terms of a mortgage contract lenders will face “new uncertainty” when valuing homes, increasing the interest rate on future mortgages.
However, supporters of the legislation, including the non-partisan Center for Responsible Lending, say the bill represents one of the simplest ways to help families trapped in “exploding” adjustable-rate mortgages in which interest payments increase rapidly.
What happens when a significant proportion of the homes in your neighborhood go up for sale? What happens when the don't sell? What happens when the value of the mortgage then exceeds the value of the house? Do you know anyone who has just sold a house, THEIR HOUSE, and then shows up at closing with a check?
If foreclosures are not stopped, NEIGHBORHOODS of responsible people will be devalued.
The credit market is already crushed unless you are rated as high as US Bonds are today, that is a market based on fear right now.
To restore confidence to the public, the bill must be passed. But we cannot lose sight of the fact that the excesses of the credit market in creating the subprime floating rate mortgage and the consumers they sold it to are the cause here. Typically in our society, when corporate excess occurs (such as price fixing, etc) the citizens find it compulsory to organize to protect themselves in the form of law.I am very sorry to say, it's time to consider this, and study the issue with regard to this specific problem.
An america awash in foreclosed mortgages, and an economy paralyzed with lack of confidence and outright fear will not win this war.
Microsoft is developing Big Brother-style software capable of remotely monitoring a worker’s productivity, physical wellbeing and competence.
The Times has seen a patent application filed by the company for a computer system that links workers to their computers via wireless sensors that measure their metabolism. The system would allow managers to monitor employees’ performance by measuring their heart rate, body temperature, movement, facial expression and blood pressure. Unions said they fear that employees could be dismissed on the basis of a computer’s assessment of their physiological state.
Technology allowing constant monitoring of workers was previously limited to pilots, firefighters and Nasa astronauts. This is believed to be the first time a company has proposed developing such software for mainstream workplaces.
Microsoft submitted a patent application in the US for a “unique monitoring system” that could link workers to their computers. Wireless sensors could read “heart rate, galvanic skin response, EMG, brain signals, respiration rate, body temperature, movement facial movements, facial expressions and blood pressure”, the application states.
Where's Mr. Romero?
Gates should be ashamed
There can be no argument that American power has been based in our economic prowess, which was based on the idea that freedom and property cannot be separated, and that capitalism and individual rights are together the inalienable right to pursue happiness and real freedom from want and need. That idea makes entrepreneurship the ne plus ultra of the USA. Our biz, our home, our castle and to hell, if needs be, with the rest.
Until the 1980's that prowess was based upon MAKING THINGS. Things we can touch. Now as among the first to send a ttl pulse around a bunch of IC's to change the micro voltage on an lcd, I can understand that Microsoft, Borland, and Microprose make things.
But so are Hondas powered by fuel cells, Sharp 108" LCD's and Kenmore washing machines. I see a commercial for the Toyota Tundra which ends with the claim they are designed, engineered, and manufactured in the USA. SO where does the profit (the reason for the entire proposition) go?
That brings us to the crux of this.

The idea that a financial instrument is a THING is a tune for greed. The idea that higher stock price is the goal and not the byproduct of better PRODUCT is a song of avariciousness. The siren song of our time is that greed is acceptable, and it has been sold by CEO's who can look in the mirror and justify $13 million for themselves while service in a major multinational corporation is cut back and people lose jobs, since less salaries mean less cost and a more productive APPEARING statistic among those left with jobs. This ideal has been espoused in the sad stories of Tyco, Adelphia and others, but make no mistake, like steroids and speed, all the players are, if not engaged, wondering if they are schmucks for not playing.
Sub prime mortgages appear to have the possibility of being THE straw.
Through greed we invented the 90's Internet stock fallacies of non things and falsified an entire economic gestalt. Through greed we sell the american dream of a home to those who have NO chance at affording it, and in struggling to make the payment on the unpayable, undermine the electric companies, the credit card payments, destroy their ability to make durable purchases, and their own future credit, and shake the world as a Citibank seekd first 7.5 billion from Abu Dhabi and now 24 more billion from China and the Al Saud. Bank of America rushes in to save Countrywide mortgage in a deal which the SEC would probably nix, but we all know as the fed makes move after futile move that national confidence is vastly more important right now.
Neither Ford, nor GM, nor a spun out Chrysler is the first to a fuel cell to market because they are too busy making a more durable buggy whip of an engine, and lobbying congress that this pattern as a good idea.
Bush pushes an immigration deal and seems confused and angry when a large % of the American populace rises in indignation.
We have NO CONFIDENCE in the government we have chosen time after time. When they tell us 'this' will fix 'it' we change channels. And there's nothing good on.
Thus China, the UAE, and the Al Saud come to have 'soft' power in American financial institutions. Institutions which provide capital for ideas, loan guarantees, and national aspirations. Of course, 'so sorry we will have to get rid of 24,000 people in order to be responsible'.
While the deals may yet fall through, announcements are expected shortly. The talks come as Citigroup is expected to disclose additional huge losses stemming from bad mortgage-related investments. Analysts project the company is likely to announce charges of $12 billion to $18 billion - and possibly more - when it reports earnings on Tuesday.
Greed is not capitalism, and just as Jimmy Carter claims he is not antisemitic, but yet fulfills every function of one, these marketing frauds who think a financial instrument can be a thing, or the covetous CEO making 400 times the line worker's salary, they have fulfilled every result of the actions of a traitor. They can claim cleanly they are no such thing, but they have been as damaging as the worst we have ever had
They have harmed this nation as much as if they transferred a carrier task force to our enemies, by granting them OWNERSHIP of our future by their short sighted nature, and their ravenous need for the Lexus instead of the Olds.
Now we have only the choice of letting these institutions DIE, and losing confidence in the USA's economy (which they want to be now based on BUYING not creating), or letting those with cash BUY our ailing institutions.
Just as their is no escape from what radical Islam means, there is no escape from this dance.
Anyone who thinks China, the UAE and the Al Saud will be soft with 32 billion TILL TODAY needs a bridge in lower Manhattan.
And the answer you Paulista morons, is not the gold standard loving, Don Black, Stormfront philic, John Birch following, fluoride in the water is a communist plot, CRACKPOT who is getting off scott free at every debate, but clearly until today the republicans and and democrats have failed us miserably. If they cannot manage this nation, just let us know.
We have been there before.
This nation is ours. Not Exxon's. Not Citigroup's. Not Toyota's, and not the Al Saud's.
We are in trouble, and it's not just islamozoid freaks who think if we make up our on laws we defy god's.
Greed is not capitalism, and avaricious coveting of things is NOT the American way.
Acquisition is a byproduct of professional behavior.
Anyone who thinks that makes me a fool, is a fool.

On the heels of Beijing's stunning slap at U.S. ships turned away from Hong Kong, a Chinese general last week said U.S.-China military relations are lagging behind overall U.S.-China ties because of congressional restrictions that were passed in 1999 to prevent China from gaining valuable warfighting knowledge.Maybe we should just build the weapons they want and give them to the PLA along with instructions written by the guys who create those assembly instructions for furniture you get from THEM.
Maj. Gen. Qian Lihua from the Defense Ministry’s foreign affairs office made the comments after meetings in Washington between U.S. and Chinese defense officials.Qian said that the 1999 congressional restrictions of the Foreign Affairs Office of the Ministry of National Defense “have imposed restrictions on the development of the relations between the two armed forces in 12 areas."
“From the legal point of view, they are obstacles to the development of the relations between the two armed forces,” he said.
The congressional restrictions were passed after U.S. intelligence revealed that China gain valuable warfighting knowledge from the visits, including learning about the vulnerability of U.S. aircraft carriers. A short time after the incident, Beijing was detected purchasing wake-homing torpedoes for its anti-aircraft carrier attack operation.
C'MON, this is actually funny. They are saying if we trusted them enough for them to gain knowledge about how to fight a war (presumably with us) that would prove we are really friends?

The Russian Embassy in Tel Aviv is operating a branch of a government body, under the guise of a cultural center, whose goal is to persuade Russian emigrants to return, according to Israeli intelligence sources.

The cultural center, which opened about two months ago, is headed by a Russian intellectual, who the intelligence sources believe worked for the Soviet secret service, the KGB. Senior government officials have reportedly expressed concerns recently over the development of "competition" between Russia and Israel over where former Russians choose to reside. The Russian Embassy was unavailable for comment on Sunday. The intelligence bodies are certain that the Russian cultural center that opened two months ago on Geula Street in Tel Aviv is a cover for the local branch of the Sons of the Homeland movement, established by Russian President Vladimir Putin to bring back Russians who emigrated to Israel.
More than three million Russian-speaking Jews are living on five continents. Just over one-third live in Israel. They mostly came in the large wave of immigration that took place after the former Soviet Union opened its gates. After Putin was elected in 2000, he established the Sons of the Homeland to maintain communication between Russia and its emigres, and eventually Putin charged the group with bringing back as many Russians as possible, with an emphasis on those in skilled professions.
The high level of education among many of the Jewish emigres and the fact that they are concentrated in large communities have made them a desirable target for the organization. Putin's goal is not only economic; the millions who have left Russia since the fall of communism are a blow to national pride.Putin also wants to counter the image of Russian anti-Semitism, by showing the country as a place that attracts Jews.
A number of groups, like the Russian-Speakers Congress, are considered fronts for the Sons of the Homeland.
American intelligence is a shamble of cyclic politically driven conclusions, and is without credibility ANYWHERE,
Iran now has a get of jail free card of galactic proportions.
The CIA launched a preemptive attack to prevent Bush from any justification in preemption of Iran's nuclear program before he left office.
In 2003 we learned years later there was official dissent from the NIE's conclusion about Iraq and WMD. Where is that dissent today, on this NIE?
Why are people not being fired left and right for leading the national effort astray for 4+ years?
None of the above is true and Israel has lost the epic battle within the US govt begun between George Marshall and Harry Truman. We are going 'arab'.
None of the above is true and it's about Iraq.
Bush is completely burnt out and others are running the show in the day to day grind of memo, and policy making minutiae building until he gets blindsided.
OR....none of the above is true and the CIA is as smart as a bag of hammers. They were totally wrong before (as they were in 2003 on Iraq) or they are totally wrong now. Or both.
The entire system is broken and we need something OTHER than the CIA to do the job we need done.
So, in my bookish historical travels I've read most if not
all of what Douglas Southall Freeman, Macpherson, Foote, Grant, Longstreet, Pfanz, DK Goodwin, on and on, had to say on the subject.
I have spent much time in the south, finding among the
cottages in Pt. Clear, AL for instance, a panoply of pictures of the commanders of the regiments, brigades and division of
the armies the south fielded under Johnston, Braxton Bragg, Sam Hood, and Beauregard in the 'west', still maintained
above the mantle, as they had been in that family since the 1870's.
Atop this pyramid of perceived honor, of course, rested the laurel wreath wearer of courtly, gentlemanly devotion to duty, courage and above all, HONOR, one R E Lee.
Just one detail. Just one tiny detail. Just one speck to flick a bit of dirt on the eternal legacy of Robert Edward Lee.
You had to fight for the existence of slavery to uphold your vision of honor and duty you complete schmuck. This tiny detail besmirches every display of that flag, every statue in southern cities, every parade giving homage to the undeniable bravery of so many men who at best were so horribly misguided that they allied their souls beneath a sin so great it had to be washed away in a sea of blood.
The blood of more men than sacrificed themselves in all the rest of our wars added together.
And so Robert E Lee offered the mantle to end slavery (as
all knew the war was REALLY about), chose instead to defend, and prolong it,
despite the effort to clothe slavery's defense in defending the
hearth and home. They are eternally inseparable. And inexcusable. More for a
man like Lee than any other. I am so sorry to say so, but it is so.
And so today we turn to the pretzel logic of otherwise good
people who are willing to make 'tough choices' to defeat that Islam which beheads at a teddy bear's name.
I am not one who finds at this point that it is likely that
neo nazis are among us in europe in this movement, though there is NO argument
that they and collaborators with the nazis were there at the birth of
some of these national movements. No argument at all.
"
I am one who does believe that in the refusal of Phillip
Dewinter to find a way (or even TRY to find a reasonable way) to excoriate his own words
on a WHITE EUROPE we see someone who was, like Hillary and the war in Iraq,
afraid to alienate his base of supporters, who would have seen any retreat on this core of all issues, as cowardice to
multiculturalism.
Thus within the forces of those who have an opinion about
mobs shouting for the beheading of the 54 year old teacher in the Sudan, and within the European LEADERSHIP of these forces, are
unquestioned white supremacists, whose prime motive is white cultural defense,
and who shelter in the clothes of opposition to an imperial,
intolerant, racist salafist and khomeinist Islam.
Like Robert E Lee, and Longstreet, these good people among us, have
decided that duty requires them not only to support and defend such people as
purport to have a white europe, not only to push them forward as icons of
defense against Sayd Qutb's Islam, but to attack those who accurately identify
what is among us, masquerading as cultural defense, as being 'smearing multiculturalists', who
are transfixed after all by 'political correctness' thus proving I suppose that we are dilettantes, unwilling to dirty our skirts.
An orgy of verbose delusion, in short, to avoid the horrific
reality underlying Robert E Lee's analogous self damnation. He chose to defend
slavery.
They have chosen to defend white europe.
Cisco plans additional $7.5 billion of investments in ChinaOMG WTF?BEIJING: Network gear maker Cisco Systems Inc. on Thursday announced a multi-year, US$16 billion (€11.1 billion) series of initiatives to expand in China with investments in manufacturing, venture capital and education efforts.
"We're going to the next chapter for Cisco in China," said Cisco Chief Executive John Chambers said at a news conference.
The ventures include a partnership with Alibaba Group, China's biggest online commerce company, to develop business services for small and medium-sized companies, Chambers said.
Other efforts include doubling Cisco's manufacturing in China, a venture capital partnership with a govenment bank and support for technology education.
The company says its total commitments in China to date are US$8.5 billion (€5.9 billion).Cisco and the government-owned China Development Bank will explore a joint US$100 million (€69.22 million) program to provide capital and expertise for innovative Chinese businesses, Chambers said.
He said that would include companies in information technology, health care, communications and other fields.
Cisco and Alibaba agreed to explore collaboration in Web-based business services for small and medium-sized companies and expanding Alibaba's overseas market, the companies said.
You mean, like penetrating the american market?
San Jose-based Cisco is the world's largest networking equipment maker, now has more than 61,500 employees worldwide and $34.92 billion in revenue in the latest fiscal year.
That's LINKSYS routers and cards, people.
Would it do America any good if we switched to NETGEAR?
When will all this be enough?
UNITED NATIONS: A U.N. expert on Friday called the growing practice of turning crops into biofuel "a crime against humanity" because it has created food shortages and sent food prices soaring, leaving millions of poor people hungry.
Jean Ziegler, who has been the U.N.'s independent expert on the right to food since the position was established in 2000, called for a five-year moratorium on biofuel production to halt the growing "catastrophe" for poor people.
Scientific research is progressing very quickly, he said, "and in five years it will be possible to make biofuel and biodiesel from agricultural waste" — not from wheat, maize, sugar cane and other food crops.
Using biofuels instead of gasoline in cars is generally considered to cut carbon dioxide emissions, which cause global warming, although some scientists say greenhouse gases released during the production of biofuel crops can offset those gains.
The use of crops for biofuel has become especially predominant in Brazil and the United States.
Have a tofu sandwich on hydroponically grown whole wheat and STFU
Today, while eco freaks (whose REAL objection is to humanity itself, ie, there are too many people around here) and world 'trufers' bitch endlessy about bioengineering crops (which I suppose they imagine are produced by Halliburton to turn minorities into morlocks by altering their genes) our need to transport EVERYTHING, and heat our homes is pouring dollars directly and by derivative to the 'charities' which buy Zelzals, Katyushas, Qassams, and Semtex, and pay for the madrassahs where racisms and west hate for any unbeliever is taught as piety, so that one day body parts of the kufr can be displayed because this is the will of god?
Oh yeah....that's fearmongering, I forgot.
He just won't say that water boarding is torture, or that it isn't.
And that is the problem.
Is the United States the kind of nation which would rather see a school bus incinerate 50 kids after a people bomb goes off, while operational knowledge of that 'mission' lies in the head of someone we captured, but we refused to waterboard since we have defined that legally as torture?
It's that simple.
John McCain wants us to NOT water board the guy officially, but to have the people who have the bad guy, breal the law and take their medicine.
This is an attractive solution since we can all run around saying we are against this 'aggressive' tactic, but wink wink, we all know what we expect. That's what we have kinds sorta, because some other people keep on insisting out loud that water boarding is NOT torture, and then won't say we do it, anymore. I expect here is an executive finding backed by a bunch of baloney executive counsels, that as commander in chief, the prez can order this up, especially in time of war.
The debate we need to have should be had RIGHT NOW, about that school bus.
Here's where I am at, and it is not a technical legal argument.
Captured terrorist are not entitled to ANY protection unde the law since their 'crime' is not in the same category of effort as stealing a car, or killing your wife and her boyfriend, or putting on a tinfoil hat in February and shooting your neighbors. It is not a 'civil crime'. It is an act of war.
Captured terrorists are not POW's either since it is their GOAL to attack innocents and those in the service killed are killed by chance.
Today the definition of torture is wrapped around words like degrading and dehumanizing. That has to change.
